I think what you describe is the Gini-Simpson index, because it subtracts the simpson index from 1 (to make it easier understandable).

Depends upon the size of the populations. This equation is used in larger pops and is the one used on the AP equations sheet. Khan Academy explains it in their population ecology lesson.

This is math. It's just a formula that's used predominantly in Biology.

Have you ever read ecology? Simpson's index is useful for calculating diversity of species in a particular ecosystem based on which environmentalists analyze (richness, evenness and dominance of species) and plan strategically. Apart from this there's also Shannon's index, Hill numbers and certain other indexes which are all resourceful in some way. Please do proper research before commenting. Khan academy is for all sciences, not just pure math and stats, CS, engineering and physics.
