It's pretty uncontested that Dessalines was at least partially responsible for Louverture's arrest. Seems like a bit of hero worship is happening. Dessalines was not a 'savage', but hindsight is pretty clear that he was much the inferior to Toussaint in terms of pretty much everything. Louverture ran large parts of the island at multiple points. He also made an army out of irregular former slaves with no weapons and manipulated entire empires against each-other. Dessalines was a brilliant general, but not much more.

@@Revan579 because at the end Toussaint was working for the glory of France. And he was stupid for seeing himself as one of them. He as arrested like a slave not as the Title he held. Toussaint was too soft thinking every white men was Breda his former master! Dessalines former master had a reputation of breaking rebellious slaves. So they didn’t see life in the same lenses

@@oddvariation1541 I think it's debatable that he ever really saw himself as French, given his political maneuverings. Regardless, it's clear that he only worked for the French insofar as they promised the freedom of black people. He didn't necessarily see a free "Haitian nation" but he certainly saw an autonomous colony free of slavery. It also seems as if people forget that Rigaud betrayed both of them first. Regarding the white people, yes, their perspectives were obviously different. Imo Toussaint both preferred non-violence and was planning for the future. He believed that the free black people needed at least a generation to be able to become culturally developed enough to administer the island, and he believed that France was the least bad of their enemies. Should they rebuke France, they're at the mercy of France and all of the colonial powers simultaneously, which happened to be what occurred. I think he wanted to develop the island under France before independence was even considered. He wanted all of it to happen under his plan though; that's why he expelled Sonthonax, because the latter was developing his own vision for the development of the island.

Haiti has a lot of natural resources. Haiti is not poor, but had some bad corrupted leaders supported by France, the US and Canada etc Haitians should not rely on his oppresors to help rebuild the country. They will never do it. They never digested that former enslaved people defeated the greatest army of that time. Haiti will be great again!

Awesome Video btw. I've not looked at these world history videos before. This is AWESOME. I'll have to watch through all of these. It is very important to understand history, to not repeat the mistakes of the past. To know what humans are capable of- both good and bad, and how things take shape. To be able to interpret patterns you see in the present times, based on seeing instances of the same things seen in the past.

This is certainly the most detailed and interesting video I've seen on Haiti independence. One aspect I would like to correct on the aspect of the debt. It was paid from 1825 until 1888, with interruptions from 1852. Haiti was occupied by the US from 1915 until 1934. Most of the economy of the country was under US control, the local currency linked to the dollars in 1922, all expenses and revenues under direct US administration (and benefit), customs were even under US control until 1946.

It's useful to note that Rochambeau was doing what the colonists themselves did regularly to torture slaves. Such brutality was common before the revolution.

Haitians should demand reparations.. but that is unlikely.. Haitians learn to forget, but people around should know all the pictures and videos you see in the media is not about ignorant black people who doesn't know how to take of themselves, it is the result of world powers trying to keep them in that bad state so they will remain striving. Haiti has a lot of potential.. "they" know what i'm talking about. Yes, i admit that there was some bad dictatorship.... Overall, do your research.

this is true they had to pay reparations for their freedom. the first african nation recognized by europe was crippled from the get-go because they owed the french money for their freedom which may be reason why their economy never took off.

Loved the two videos I feel they were a good introduction to the subject, of which I know very little. I am also interested in the other half of the island though. I have heard that the Dominican Rep came out of Haiti in order to become recoqnised but I am unsure if that is true and am sure it is a very short version of events.

Oh wow... I didn't think you made a video on this topic Khan. but you should consider reading up on the more modern revision of the history of Haiti. They reflect somewhat a more accurate version of event and less insultive of my Ancestors. Your details of events, although meant well, reflect the french and english version of event to not only save face. But to emply that Black slaves or black people do not possesed the intelligence that of white enough to beat his army.

@@victorvalandybernard7944 He means that their motivations may not have been to commit an evil act but may have been justified by their own thought process as a product of their time . Cortez for example may seem evil but it is very unlikely that the Aztecs would have a different fate had it been another spaniard or European. Humans are humans and the group with more advanced weapons, desire for Gold, and strong belief that their God was THE God would yield the same outcome regardless of the players.

The U.S, under the presidency of John Adams from 1796-1800, recognized and supported the Saint Domingue's rebellion and Toussaint Louverture. Washington helped the island in their cause by sending USS Constitution, General Greene and other battle schooners. But after Adams's completion of term in office and election of 1800, things changed when Thomas Jefferson became president. He supported the French envoy in reclaiming back the island and reinstituting slavery there. The U.S ultimately betrayed Haïti.
