Although my last history lesson was well over 10 years ago, I'm pretty sure we've never covered this subject to such dept as these video's. I love Khanacademy :)

I recommend making the name of the 'Great War' clear on the title. This would help people understand just by looking at the title what this video is all about.

Serbia assasin kills Franz Ferdinand Austria send impossible request, Serbia denies them Austria declares war Germany helps Austria Germany use schleeifen (wrong spelling) plan made by Alfred von schleefen Plan = defeat France, go through Belgium to avoid the forts of France, destroy and capture France before Russian army mobilisés Then move troops to Russia to fight (Everything goes wrong) rip Germans

Germany asked Belgium for free passage. Belgium refused since they are neutral. Germany entered Belgian territory without their consent, so they were hostile and were breaking the treaty of london 1839 which all great powers signed. Regardless Britain did not enter the war over Belgian neutrality, but out of fear that if they didnt, Germany would win the war and become a continental superpower which was really close to them.

They didn't try their best to comply. Honestly, AH attacked them because they couldn't catch the bad guys, that is sooooo true.

Belgium was neutral. It gave a quick and decisive route to paris. Second, They didn't invade they asked the belgian gov. for military passage for which the belgians declined. In any way shape or form the british had no right to enter the war legally or not. Legally the london treaty only applied if Germany was hostile to belgium. It was not hostile to belgium just france.

This is the story I always thought was basically true. Germany as the great agressor like when they invaded Holland (my country)in 1940. But it's not really true. It's far more complex. France started about 15 years after the Franco Prusian war a segret diplomatic war against Germany. They are very active in segretly making bonds with the Russians the English they even have a very segret treaty with Italy to join the allies instead of the Tripple Alliance. The French via diplomatic ways even fund and organise the black hands assasination attempt on Franz Ferdinand. Read, Kanttekeningen bij de eerste wereldoorlog. By J.H.J. Andriessen. He makes a very thorough study on the proces leading to the start of the 1 WW. Even the French covernment did not really know what their segret service was planning under their own eyes. We know more and more about how French segret diplomacy worked (read: Umberto Eco's, The cementry of Prague). France even led it's troops retreat 10 km just before the war started just to give the impression that they where not the agressor, well that needs a lot of planning beforehand to make such an enormous maneuver with a whole army.Of course every country in Europe played it's role (even poor little Belgium knew their roll in the Von Schlieffen plan) but the French wanted to get even with the Germans. They where humilliated to bad in 1870-1871. They payed their wardept to the Germans which was even a higher price that what the Germans had to pay afters the 1WW (and did not fully pay). I'm not a pro Germany kind of person with parents who suffert under German occupation but here I must say that the Germans where not the real agressor. In war nothing is what it looks like. Sorry for my bad English. Jack Droog The Netherlands

@@saintofchelseathomascarlyl5713 Sorry for this rather late reply, but I apparently wrote this six years ago and there is no you tube video about this apart from the really good series by the The great war, team. The dutch writer I referred to J.H.J Andriessen did very thorough resurge on the 1WW and wrote several books in Dutch. He might be dead now as is Umberto Eco (though he was a novel writer of course but he did his homework very well). Read books is al I can say, much of youtube is build on the books of historians and there resurge. And good books show your where they got their information from, so one can check.

You're wrong. Russia had loss over the war. They were going through a major industrialization and had huge economic growth before the war.

Why didn't Germany just invade France somewhere else along the border with France? Why did they have to go through Belgium?
@rumbleice9467
@rumbleice9467 3 жыл бұрын
The reason why Germany can't is because when the German invaded France through the French and German border, the French were already prepared and have Fortifications so Germany have to go through Belgium.
