I prefer a cultural approach to understanding social influences. I consider the language that forms the symbols to interact, either as individuals or as a group. without knowing the language, it is difficult to communicate symbols that can be understood. language makes us think about problems continuously.

The Stanford Prison Experiment was flawed. The participants didn't become overly authoritative abusive guards on their own. They were encouraged to act "tough" by Philip Zimbardo. Also, some of the inmates faked outbursts in order to leave the experiment so they could go study. The study took it as the outbursts were all caused by the trauma of "prison". Here's a quote from Jay Van Bavel, an associate professor of psychology and neural science at New York University. "The bottom line is that conformity isn't natural, blind or inevitable. Zimbardo was not only deeply wrong about this - but his public comments misled millions of people into accepting this false narrative about the Stanford Prison Experiment." Other researchers have attempted to replicate the results of the study and failed.

I cringe every time someone cites that experiment. It needs to be left out in the cold with Freud. Good video series otherwise, though.

Oof! Yeah, that's the problem with citing most sciences - new data could prove the previous studies as ineffectual and/or untrue, but considering how information is processed it leaves a lot of people treating the previous study as fact still...
