Not really. What is interesting though is that we can represent concepts of varying degrees of tangibility in our brains.

Positive emotions, such as happiness and excitement, appear in the left hemisphere! Negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, or fear, appear in the right hemisphere! The brain triggers these emotions.

@@Sonia-zv9qh THanks you, I just got a reply after 5 years from someone on a post so I thought I would reply. When I look back over the last 5 years. the feelings are still there I just learn how to deal with and not show people eg at work. I also look after myself and take time for self care. Moving interstate closer to the rest of my family has also helped my mental state, my depression and anxiety. Ive had psychology sessions but really theres not much they can do. Its basically just life and its better to be positive than not. I just hope people dont lose 3 of the most special people all within 5 months of each other and also deal with their phobias, chronic illness, grief from childhood and young adult as it just piles on at the same time.

Well...that explains a lot. The left hemisphere of my brain was damaged after a near-death experience. The damage showed up most heavily on the left side. The loss of oxygen had to go somewhere and that's where it chose to park itself; on the left side of my brain.
@VickiBee
@VickiBee 10 жыл бұрын
Technically I was dead, they called it 'clinically dead,' but it was only for 5 minutes, and to this day I don't see how it could have done that much damage while I've watched shows of 'scientific miracles' who were dead up to 20 minutes - again clinically dead - but show no significant brain dysfunction.

It turns out that we calculate our decision the same way an algorithm calculates its results. The only difference is that we have a ‘hint’ of survival added to our intuition ( the very drive that helps us calculate in the right direction ).

Just want to say that not everybody with this damage behaves bad...some of us actually behave To Well in most situation. Take Attention Defecit Disorder for example. I dont curse unless severly hurt or provoked...but time management and memory recall is difficult, and I get hurt psycologically to easy. I also get bored very easy, even though I try very hard to sit still and stick things out anyway, and usually I try not to show it, in order not to hurt anyones feelings by ignoring them, often because I feel sorry for them and think they deserve beeing listen to. I also tend to keep shut a lot so I dont say things by impulse because I analyse situations and informations too slow usually.

When studying aggression, current research has found that Frontal Asymmetry (Left and Right as shown in the video) is not related to emotional valence (positive and negative emotions). It is rather more systematically related to Approach and Withdrawl; left frontal activity is related to approach whereas the right frontal is related to withdrawal regardless of emotional state. This suggests that emotional precursors in aggression might include negative emotions in approach behaviors, and the same can be observed vice versa. Thus, more left frontal cortical activation can be observed during negative emotional states when engaging in approach-related behaviors. With this kind of limitation, we can suggest that there can be many contributors that evoke approach-related behaviors. Hence, they are not exclusive to emotional valence. Further research can explore this. References: Carver, C. S., & Harmon-Jones, E. (2009). Anger is an approach-related affect: Evidence and implications. Psychological Bulletin, 135, 183-204. Curious to know how this works with introverts, those who are at the point where they need to be alone to regain their energy. I would imagine there would be more activity in the right when they are tired of being social and more activity in the left when they are spending time alone.

Actually as I know it is not completely true. The left hemisphere is associated with "towards" emotions, like happiness, enjoyment, but also anger. The right hemisphere is associated with "withdraw" emotions, like disgust, fear, etc.

The problem is Phineas Gage's effects were only observed by his friends. Emotionally he probably always had those feelings of disgust inside but used his left prefrontal cortex to keep his emotions controlled. We all live in a facade because we learned to suck up our emotions and put on a happy face, which causes a lot of depression because we aren't being real with our emotions like we naturally were as children. Also when test subjects view videos, some people may find pleasure in grotesqe videos which would give a different effect than you may be suspecting. There is a huge problem with observing without understanding what is really be going on inside someone's head. Even if you ask the test subject what they felt they might not know because many people are very suppressed or they could lie if they feel they're wrong for feeling pleasure. You can come up with many false conclusions experimenting this way. Sadly this is the state of modern science.

There is quite of bit of contradictory research on which hemisphere is associated with 'negative or positive' emotion. I was just reading how the right amygdala is associated with happy/joy feelings and the left with fear....so is it 'flipped' in the cortical region? Also, it's interesting that it is our left-hemisphere that is more socially 'independent' or 'I' focused...so for studies to associate it with connection and relating with others...doesn't make sense. I have to wonder how much assumption or projection is being made within these so-called scientific studies...

I think what he means by negative emotions are EMOTIONS which are harmful due to the spectator's [person] interaction. Take hormones into consideration in relation to the nature it has with emotions and memory. Representations remind us of memory; our logical thinking is on the left side (experiences) and our creativity (abstract thought) is on the right. Obvious negativity tends to come from experiences no?

1: There are two amygdalas, not one. 2: They don't just generate negative emotions. They generate ALL emotions, good or bad. They also generate first impressions, interpret facial gestures, etc. They are at the core of our personalities. 3: Men and women generate fear in opposite hemispheres, so the notion that positive is left and negative is right, is incorrect. 4: Don't overexplain so much.
