Khanom Beach
Nakhon Si Tammarat province
If you like deserted beaches then Khanom beach in the Nakhon Si Tammarat province of Thailand could be the place for you. Kilometres of empty sand on the gulf of Thailand just a short distance from Samui island but a million miles away in terms of atmosphere.
This is a place where you can enjoy doing absolutely nothing at all, except may be going to see some pink dolphins.
Khanom is off the beaten trail and not well serviced by public transport so it’s best to have your own transport.
The three beaches of Haad Kho Khao to the north, Haad Hua Thanon to the south and Haad Nadan in the middle are collectively referred to as Khanom beach. Haad Nadan has the most choices for accommodation and restaurants but it’s still very quiet.
Accommodations in Khanom can fill up on weekends and Thai public holidays when Thai families drive in from the cities. The area is a lot quieter during the week.
The main tourist activity from Khanom beach is taking a boat out to spot Irrawaddy dolphins, unique because of their violet colouration.
You can hire a long tail boat an driver from the pier at Laem Prathap, early morning is best for a good chance to see them. The dolphins don’t come that close to the boats, you won’t be able to snorkel with them, but it’s a great experience.
If you arrive at the pier at 7:00 am you may be able to share a boat with other people looking to do likewise. Laem Prathap (Prathap cape) is about 20 km north of Khanom beach.
This amazing 8 KM of beach is well worth a visit plus there are many other things to do and see in the area.
Enjoy the video!

Hi there. Thanks för the video. Me and my wife just built a house in that area, and we go to Na Dan beach to take a dip in the sea, exactly where you are right now in this video. A slow 10 minute walk. Greetings from Sweden. / Hans and Nit.

Very nice. I really like this area. The view point and twisty road just a little to the south is also very cool. I was just in the area a few days ago but it was raining so I didn’t stop at the beach this time. Maybe on my next trip the weather will be better. Thanks for watching :)

Thanks for the video and the attached description about Khanom. We are visiting Nakhon Si Tammarat, Khanom and Suret Thani late March. Will stay in the Khanom Golden Beach Hotel for two nights. Looking forward to the beautiful quiet beach, a tour to see the pink dolphins and particularly a sense of "doing nothing". We won't have a car so hopefully the hotel may help us to arrange transportation and driver. At the beach, is sand flies a concern? Does coconut help to avoid those bugs? I have send you a comment before about Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon but we have changed our itinerary to go to the above cities. Also enjoy your videos in Bangkok and Taiwan.

I’m glad you enjoyed this video and the others I’ve posted. :) I’m not familiar with that hotel so I don’t know about transportation options. When I travel I usually rent a scooter to get around. Most little towns have several options for renting them. Small areas like Khanom beach you wouldn’t have much to worry about on them, just depends on your comfort level and transportation needs. A lot of places also have a driver that can take you around depending on your budget. I’ve never seen the pink dolphins but it’s on my list. If you remember leave me a comment about how it was so others can decide if it’s worth it or not. I have been reading that with tourist numbers increasing Khanom beach is starting to get very busy on the weekends now but I haven’t been back through to confirm that. I didn’t have any issue with sand flies on this beach and I don’t know if coconut helps or not. Generally if there is any insect that bites or sucks blood they find me. Lol a good idea is to pack some insect repellent. I already forget it and the mosquitos are a real problem in the evenings or while sleeping. I hope this helps. You should have a great time later this month. I made a few videos of Suret Thani like the night market and boat tour. I enjoyed the area. It’s quite but has a lot of charm.

@@endlessjourneytravels We stayed in Nakhon Si Tammarat for three days. Did mostly culinary meals of Southern Thailand like Khanom Jeen (rice noodle, three kinds of curry sauce and raw vegetables like cashew leaves), red ant eggs in coconut broth (in a famous restaurant with free shadow puppet show), catfish in sour curry, fabulous coffee/matabala roti/pork bone in tea soup (in legendary Kopi restaurants, several locations) and other cuisine with names I don’t remember. Delicious and somewhat adventurous to try. Also visited Wat Mahathat (considered the most important way in the South) and the National Museum. Also had a delightful visit to the village of Kiriwang. We waded in the shallow river and had lunch by the river. Had two days in Khanom at the Khanom Golden Beach Hotel. The beachfront location delights me. The beach is almost empty. The sand is perfectly fine close to the water and is just lined with lots of shells further in. Small numbers of bottles on the beach but I find it quite negligible. We found shade in front of the restaurant by the Hotel where we lounged, ate and drank(smoothies and fresh coconut water). It’s a fabulous place to chilax and do nothing. Glad we did the boat tour to see the pink dolphins although not all are pink depending on the age. Although Koh Samui is more popular, Khanom Beach is a nice alternative to a beach vacation.

@@felixchow5579 that sounds like a great trip. The food is nice. I’ve never tried some of what you had like the red ant dish. I made a video of the wat Mahathat there and it’s great. Where did you take the boat to see the pink dolphins at? How much was it? Would you recommend? I’ve seen people say it’s a must do as well as others saying skip. What do you think? I agree the beach is a great alternative to Koh Samui. Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience. :)

@@endlessjourneytravels The pink dolphin boat tour with a guide and a longtail boat captain costs 900baht per person. The guide picked us up at our hotel at 8 am and drove to the pier at Nang Kam Beach close to the Raja Ferry Port and Seafran Ferry Port where ferries commute to Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao. There were another couple from Britain in the tour so the size of the tour was perfect. The tour ended at noon. We started to have sightings of the dolphins shortly after our boat sailed pass the two ferry terminals. We saw the back fins and the tail fins clearly several times in a fairly respectable distance. No jumping or spinning out of water though😅. We were already excited and satisfied with what we saw. I took video and pictures of the dolphins. Then no sightings for a while as the boat sailed about the area until suddenly dolphins resurfaced, mother and baby. As the guide says, only the older dolphins are pink and babies are grey. The guide also showed us ancient striated and curved rock formations along some islands and brought us to visit a shrine on a small island. We also saw sea eagles and coloured swallows. The guide also showed us an area with mangrove regeneration project which is important to ecosystem. I think the tour is worth. However, the wife of the British couple thought it’s not worth because she didn’t see enough dolphins (even no spinning out of water) compared to her past experience of the same sort in Thailand. Guess everything is relative. After the tour, the boat returned to the same pier. The guide drove us back to our hotel.

@@felixchow5579 it sounds like a good day to me. Ya it’s tough to make everyone happy. I’ve only saw dolphins one time in Thailand and it was on the ferry going to Koh Chang. My wife was amazed since it was the first time she ever saw dolphins. Thanks for the detailed information about the tour. I will do this next time we are in the area. I know exactly where the ferry terminal is so should be easy for us to do. The cost is also reasonable for how long it is. Appreciate it.
