I can't believe I never made the connection between Morph in KTK and the design goal of making stuff castable in a three color environment. So much thought goes into Magic's design, it's crazy.
@AB-sw4kb Жыл бұрын
Three mana 2/2s are also better in a slower limited environment. Cards like Mardu Heart-Piercer, a 4 drop that deals 2 damage to a creature, can pick off a Morph before it unflips.
@andrewmoore7014 Жыл бұрын
If you want to get a feel for how much thought has to go in to all of this, try designing a cube some time. A lot of things that feel random or incidental actually require a lot of shrewd and thoughtful decision making when you're building a limited environment.

I started playing Magic around 2015/2016, and some of the first packs I ever opened were Dragons of Tarkir and original Theros. I casually collected cards then until Shadows Over Innistrad, and my first draft was Conspiracy 2 right after release. I loved the cards and designs of Khans block and was super excited that New Capenna tried to be a spiritual successor to the set, but I never had the opportunity to get the limited experience others did. So I greatly appreciate the quick run-through of Khans! Like Shadows Remastered, I want to play at least one draft on Arena before it leaves, and I think this video provides a lot of the context I was looking for clarity on (e.g. worse card stats compared to modern limited, roles of key mechanics, presence of Morph, etc.) I believe this is a clear yet concise overview of the format and its nuances, while toting the message that true understanding comes from playing it. Personally, I would have liked maybe some more notable commons in each color toward the end, just to gauge what each color is like. Red got a lot of focus in the end and Black was the talking point for removal, but I believe it would have been nice to cover some of the other colors in a on-stop-shop for workhorse limited cards. Also, my understanding from Time Spiral Remastered was that Green didn't get the push in card quality in removal for some time, so I would have liked a little more info on that. Overall, really like this quick rundown!

This is the first time I watched Mtg video for more than an hour, and I've been playing since 1998 😂. Truly great breakdown. I played 3 drafts prior to this video and now I see why I did so bad (I barely remember the original Khans). I instinctly drafted friendly colors and this is a biggest mistake to make in this format. You've structured it perfectly!

Thanks for the refresher! This was the format I learned how to draft in and while it sucked because I never trophied on mtgo, I did pick up my first 3-0 in Fate reforged. Anyway, just being able to play these cards in limited on arena is going to be a blast, hopefully I leanred something lol. I can't wait to draft my pet deck, B/G toughness matters

Great video! It's definitely a Magic boomer set, and I'm really looking forward to drafting it again. I considered it the GOAT back in the day and I hope it keeps its status, but that might be because I still love these slower sets in general. Dominaria (the OG one, where it was still almost fine to open on a vanilla 3 mana 2/3 and a 5 mana 3/3 that slowly drew cards was a "mythic uncommon") is still one of my favorite formats of all time, and I'm hoping this set is a break from the 1drop/2drop craziness that Draft turned into over the last five years or so. Then again it's also possible we're all wrong and in two weeks we'll see that 17lands puts any mardu 2-drop over the trilands. Or we'll all die to the Wingmate Rocs and of the world.

More we call them "shards" because they represent the colors of the "shards" of Alara -- though they are conveniently shard-shaped on the color wheel too.
@limitedlevel-ups Жыл бұрын
True! But in alara design that’s why they called them shards ahah. A little chicken/egg

Triple KTK was definitely a contender for the Greatest of All Time status when it was released, but I don't think it has aged well enough to make it THE G.O.A.T.. It was really innovative at the time it was released and was the precursor modern limited formats. That said, there are a lot of terrible commons in KTK and I think people might be surprised that it doesn't play out as well as they've heard. I saved some boxes of KTK and drafted it this year. It was a fine experience, but the age definitely shows. I sort of wish they have removed some of the junk commons and replaced them with some playable support cards. We'll see how it plays! I'm excited nonetheless.

@zeoxyman Жыл бұрын
As someone who's barely played with either of these mechanics, is Morph kinda similar to Foretell? The downside is that people can interact with your facedown (and they know it's always a creature), but having a 2/2 body feels like a fair trade for that in draft.
@RPG_Bliss Жыл бұрын
It’s a bit different really. It’s a combat centric mechanic in that you can attack with mana up and threaten to flip it so the opponent has to consider if blocking is worth it. It’s my fav mechanic of all time so I’m excited for this. I also like a lot of the “etb” or when flipped effects.
@afikolami Жыл бұрын
Outlast looks like a very bad mechanic compared to the others. The creatures are not on scale with the mana values, you need to invest more mana and tap the creature to activate it, at sorcery speed, and of course, the creatures are affected by summoning sickness so you need to wait a whole turn to activate it.
@limitedlevel-ups Жыл бұрын
Well do I have some news for you! It’s generally regarded as the strongest mechanic of the 5 in this format
