In “Khartoum” (1966) the British empire found itself in a dilemma, caused by riots in the Sudan in the 1880s, as they want guarantee the promised peace to the Egyptians in the city of Khartoum but not at the expense of their own troops. General Charles Gordon (Charlton Heston) is given the task to devote himself to the problem, mainly in form of the forces of Muhammad Ahmad (Laurence Olivier). The movie is a little gem of a grand scale epic, made at a time where epics such as “The Ten Commandments” (1956), “Ben Hur” (1959), “El Cid” (1961) and “Lawrence Of Arabia” (1962), were receiving worldwide appreciation. While “Khartoum” is not as big as those (and you will conform it is not as known), it deserves to be known and appreciated, as well. With a great cast, especially Olivier and great imagery, the movie is very pleasing for the heart of the moviegoer. Rounding all that up is the great music by British composer Frank Cordell, who, as a jazz musician made himself a name in the movie business with lush orchestrated and very colorful scores, of which each of them is worth a listen. You never got in touch with his name or music? Here is your chance! While there is indeed already a video of Cordell’s “Khartoum”, based on the (pretty film-accurate) stereo album re-recording, it felt important to take a look at the very film recordings. While those original recordings seemed lost to time, they appeared as a very generous LP / CD bundle at Stylotone Records (link in the description), to whom access to Cordell’s private copies of the film recordings was given. Though in mono, those tracks feature a more extensive palette of music, of course, to which we will listen to now. Enjoy!

Wonderful original soundtrack music: the Stylotone package is a real beauty. Frank Cordell composed a couple of exciting epic film scores in the sixties, KHARTOUM and CROMWELL, both big historical roadshows, and both excitingly orchestrated and performed. I also enjoy the delicate and beautiful score he wrote for RING OF BRIGHT WATER at the end of the sixties. Happy listening to all!

I knew you were a man after my own heart Fred. Love this film and the soundtrack. 👍Just one of many, many examples of why the 60's was the greatest decade in film history.

I love this soundtrack! I wish they made more movies like this again. In that 1830's to 1890' colonia era. Really, more historical movies of any kind these days I would appreciate. But oh well, great sounds.

Fine soundtrack but....no stereo?
@SoundtrackFred3 жыл бұрын
Hello pp, Maybe you take a look into the little introduction I wrote for this video, but in short: there are tracks available in stereo (and on KZbin) in Form of the original soundtrack album re-recording by Cordell. Those tracks featured here however, are the original film versions that survived only in Cordell's private collection (and in mono), making them an absolute rarity. Best! Fred
