With her dark hair, pale skin, and "stately" nose, Ms. Buniatishvili looks like a kind of female Chopin! I can't help but imagine that Chopin would be very pleased with this performance. I think she's an incredible pianist. Playing the piano seems to be like "child's play" for her, technical concerns a complete "non-issue." Her passionate and sensitive playing completely bowls me over. A master pianist beyond any doubt. I'd like to have her hands for a day! Or a half day. Or two hours. Or an hour. Okay, for just 12 minutes or so. Enough to play through one of the Chopin Ballades or Scherzos!

@Nathaniel Rosenstein Maybe she comes across differently on your computer screen. Then again, I can't claim to be any expert on the complexions of the world's women. Or much of anything else for that matter!

@free democracy "Grand in proportions and/or appearance" is one meaning of "stately." Though I used the word just to add (hopefully) a dash of humor!

@LosersNeedToGetALife Her passion and technical control definitely rule the day--and some very difficult piano music! We know that Chopin wrote in a letter of how he envied Liszt's way of playing his (Chopin's) Etudes. I imagine he might have felt the same way if he heard Khatia's powerful playing of some of his more demanding pieces. You were lucky to see/hear her in concert! Speaking of Liszt, my old piano teacher told me that according to a biography of Chopin by Alan Walker (who is renowned for his huge biography of Liszt), Liszt learned all the Chopin Etudes in two weeks. Haw! Would that I could ever learn all of those Etudes, much less in two weeks!

LoL. 9:10 könnte eine Ahnung vom Antlitz Liszts erregen, warum nicht. Doch was soll das. Die Interpretation ist stupend, kirre toll.

As wonderful as it is to hear her play this, if you get the piano music and follow along, or at least try to, you can get a deeper understanding of her mastery of this music. When you look at music as complex as this, it is difficult not to focus on what looks like really hard places in the music. But when you watch her play, there are no difficult spots, just more intense ones! I think her ability to translate what was written into actual music is very possibly better than anyone else alive right now. When you look at the score, you see a million notes everywhere; but when you hear her play, you do not hear any of that. She brings a warmth to this music, almost as if she wrote it herself, not Chopin. But surely, surely, somewhere Chopin is smiling! Brava, Miss Khatia and Thank you!
@tonefixstudio23375 жыл бұрын
I think the music comes first. The page is just the reverse-engineered version of what the composer heard in their head. If Khatia takes you beyond worrying about simplicity/complexity paradigms, she has done what the composer would have wished the most.

My thoughts exactly. I've yet to see her play from a piece of sheet music -- and some of the pieces are several times the length of this one. Quite apart from her technical playing talent, the ability to hold that much intense, complicated music in her head is incomprehensible.

Just plays it a lot, heard others play it a lot - it’s a pretty well known piece - and if she’s played a lot of other Chopin pieces (which she has), it’s easier to remember the stylings as they are found in other pieces.

Among the many attributes that I admire about Khatia is the way she seems to invite us into her life, without being arrogant about it. When she plays, she invites us to feel the music along with her. In photos, it seems almost like she would be happy for us to join her and get as much enjoyment out of her life and talent as she does. In her interviews, she tries to share her deepest self as much as she can do so with mere words. Khatia is yhe best.

You are correct. Of course, I only express my own personal opinion but when Khatia plays she does indeed draw her audience in with her. There are only a few artists who can do this, and even fewer as brilliantly as Khatia Buniatishvili. You are talking about pianists like Horowitz and Rubinstein. She is THAT good!

What a wonderful, precious and unique performance of the one of a kind F minor ballade! Thank you Khatia!! I can't say the same thing for the producer of the video, though. Yes, Khatia has beautiful hair, and the shots of her face, her authentic feeling of the music reflecting on her subtle Mona Lisa smile as well as the gentle frown (add your favorite adjectives here.. words are not enough to describe the emotional depth of this late composition by an aging 33-34 year old Chopin who had only about 5 more years to live). Please give us more shots of Khatia's capable and beautiful hands to replace some of the shots of her hair obscuring her face... But, regardless of that minor gripe, thank you to everybody who helped this creation come alive!

Wow, enjoyed the speed and the start of that coda. It's more the way I would play it. It is also a smart idea to do one filming and multiple audio recordings and then layer the video over your choice audio recording. I noticed at points her arms simply weren't moving right for the sections of the piece I was hearing. I was wondering if any pianist would be as daring as this in a live performance!

So overly fast it annoys me because she is a very good pianist but it’s like she is trying to show off het skills. Anyways…

WIth all do respect, Kathia is an outstanding talent. However, going through all classical piano masters of the 20th and 21st century, I believe her approach to Chopin is a little commercial. I understand we live in a different era, and the way of interpreting him has evolved against what "he" would have sounded 200 years ago, but I feel that for a piece of such length and musical complexity, Kathia doesn't fully grasp its message. The overall storytelling feels unattended and comes across as rather shallow when she focuses too much in over dramatising bright or quiet parts, abusing dynamics and rubato to sound almost whiny, and then exaggerating contrasts by accelerating more musically complex virtuoso passages to sound inflatedly "Liszt"-ian. Chopin was an emotional but reserved person, and the 4th Ballade represents the pinnacle of his musical development, where his composing style achieved a more subtle and collected emotional maturity without losing his impassioned depth, as opposed to Ballade 1 with a more archetypical melancholic theme, or Ballade 2 with its fiery contrasts and explosiveness. Different to other romantic composers like Liszt, that might have given technicality a more central role, Chopin's main thesis always revolves solely around musicality, using virtuosity only where the emotiveness and intended colours call for it. His musical hues emerge only when one lets his phrases suspire, no matter how accelerated, and even Kissin, Argerich or Lugansky, whose virtuosity and heavy touch is in my opinion better suited for Rachmaninoff or Beethoven, seem to transform their heated style to let the subtle depths of this complex piece breathe properly. My personal favourite interpretations on KZbin (each very different from each other) are the following: More classic interpretations: Lugansky: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5DVg3RtbrGVj8U Zimerman: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppaQeKWIht9rps0 Modern approaches (All winners or runner-ups of the Chopin Piano competition): Avdeeva: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmOkZ5Kigd1rrpY Liu: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i362qKB6gJKmiq8 Shishkin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baqoqnehZth-jdk Yundi (The public unfortunately claps before the coda): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWeUdGyIrNeKY7s
