After listening to this performance multiple times, and saying it might have been played too fast, well this is 2019 and not 1976 when I was first introduced to this wonderful composition. The other thing is this, the audio on this video is not as good as many of her other KZbin videos, and that makes a difference too. So, her interpretation is her own, and she deserves much credit for being able to play it at a tempo that is satisfying to her soul.

This is an incredible performance played under the most adverse conditions imaginable - open air , babies screaming, people walking up and down the aisle; and yet it's one of the finest performances of.Rachmaninoff 2 I've heard in quite a while, played with intensity, accuracy, and great romantic spirit. Khatia is capable of inspiring orchestras to play beyond their normal abilities; in this instance they were united by common adversity to give a performance of great courage, considering all that could have gone wrong with a piece as difficult as Rach 2. P.S. A whole thread stating this sentiment was just deleted; I don't know why. This is an attempt to restore the essence of what I stated before. Thanks.

Abundance There you are, Abundance! So happy to find another post from you! And you put everything in perspective for me. I don't know what to think about all the movement she did on the bench at about 5:25. It was the wildest thing I have ever seen a classical performer do. Also confusing to me is the conductor starting this 3rd movement while Khatia was graciously acknowledging the inappropriate applause between the 2nd and 3rd movements. She hardly had time to adjust herself on the bench before the conductor started. She got herself together despite this. Under these circumstances, with a noisy, seemingly unsophisticated audience, the conductor should have taken his cue from Khatia and allowed her the time to acknowledge the audience and wait until things settle down. She is just incredible to me. She seems undaunted by everything and keeps the pace, no matter what! Wild horses could have charged the stage! She is one glorious woman!
@abundance66927 жыл бұрын
Kristine Thomas Yes, this is definitely an unusual concert in many ways, both in the performers' response to the conditions and in the behavior of the audience itself. I was astounded at the quality of the performance given the wretchedness of the conditions. Both the orchestra and the soloist play with intensity and precision, responding to each other as if they were playing an intimate piece of chamber music. Especially commendable is the concertmaster, who leads the orchestra with a decisiveness found only among the best. He was situated directly adjacent to Khatia and they seemed to be communicating very well, which was one of the keys, I think, to the greatness of the performance. The audience, meanwhile, exhibits behavior very boorish even for outdoor concerts of this type. Khatia is definitely one-of-a-kind, a unique performer who does everything in her own way. The gyrations at 5:25 are definitely something you won't see from anyone else. The conductor seemed to be in a hurry to get out of there as soon as possible, maybe explaining his over-hasty commencement of the last movement. Fortunately even this Khatia was unaffected by, she just ignored it and carried on as if there was nothing unusual about anything that was happening. She has a fearlessness which characterizes not only her behavior, but her performances themselves. Her willingness to take risks and live on the edge of what is possible sometimes results in revelatory performances, such as in the recordings of the Liszt B minor Sonata or Mussorgsky's Pictures or even this unique interpretation of the Rachmaninov Second Concerto.

I started to listen to classical music as a child on 78 RPM records. Long before the 33 1/3 long play recordings. I never had the luxury of seeing the artist playing. They could have been standing on their heads while playing for all I knew. And all recordings were done on a sound stage. No audiences. This is a private "Bootlegged" recording of a live concert with all of the associated problems. Like babies crying wanting to be breast fed by their mothers. Who don't want to miss an excellent concert.

If this audience were blind, KB's performance would have been technically (if not musically) astounding; if this were a beauty contest, KB would have been a strong contender. But since it is neither, we get Victorian criticism. That's what happens when we have a 21st century virtuoso playing 19th century music.
@nessieness54334 жыл бұрын
We all acknowledge KB's beauty and sensuality, but the orgiastic poses are a bit over the top, ever more. Of course this very talented pianist lives in the music, has her temperament and clothing preferences that highlight her beauty , but still. I tend to not watch, only listen. This recording quality is not the best due to too much background noise (baby crying...)
