if khmer krom live in the village (phum, srok) they can speak khmer influently. however, some rich khmer family choose to live in big cities like Saigon and use Vietnamese for daily. finally city khmer almost cant speak their own language any more. I think you had never been in Khmer village before, I am Vietnamese and I stayed with khmer people several times! it's really traditional, just come and see P/S young Vietnamese in US can't speak Vietnamese

come and see! Khmer pagodas in Vietnam are sometimes bigger and more beautiful than in Cambodia. Khmer krom creat famous "Lakhon Basak" and locals call it "Dù Kê".

Today, Khmer Kroms live along fine with the Vietnamese, especially young people. I saw with my own eyes. Many Khmer Kroms are very successful. They own large rice fields and fish farms. Some are even wealthier and happier than Khmers in the Cambodia, France, and US. Of course, the communist government always intimidate everyone VN, not just only Khmer Kroms. They fear losing powers.

Khmer Krom is Cambodian land that Viet Minh took on June 4th, 1949. Some people said that France cut this part and give to South Vietnam in order to make everyone has the same amount of land. Some said that French were defeated by Viet Minh and VietMint captured so many French soldiers. So, is this an exchange for the French soldiers with Cambodian land to Viet Minh? Lol. French cut this part of Cambodia without the authority of the Cambodian government at that time. They did it secretly w/ VM.

Yes, they may live along with the Vietnamese just fine because they have no choice, but to try to make the best they can under the circumstances. This not does not mean that they're happy in any way it shows. Internally, they're very unhappy and lack pride in their ownselves, because of they're being forced to do what is told to do and say what being told to say; and being forced to call their own land as Vietnam and forced to be Vietnamese citizens instead of their Khmer citizens. Very sad
