I personally saw a 9ft tiger shark in the waters off Kahuku Pt. swim toward Malaekahana Park in 2002. Sharks are everywhere. Some people are lucky while others not so.

Damn. I knew Tamayo when he was a little kid! LIke, little-little. We lived in Punalu'u next to Kaya's store, and Tamayo and his mom and dad lived in the same little cluster of houses we did. It was like ... out of the houses maybe 1-2 had a working telephone at any given time. It was very humble times back then.

Oh wow i stayed in that huge concrete condo building next to the OLD HAWAIIAN CEMETERY &WEE CHAPEL . Went to that old store with the yummy food being cooked up at the back if store. Damn good. Really cool temp wise it rained ever afternoon. Not swimming waters for sure pritty rough out there. Me no go.

OMG! This is so tragic. Its stunning in that we rightfully consider our Lifeguards as guardians and heroes. I am very saddened by this though I never met the man. This will while this will be painful for the entire community on O'ahu and well beyond, he obviously set a great example of how to live with and love the ocean.

SO MANY VERSIONS? One says he was paddling out w/others on lunch break so witnessed attack. Another says no; unattended. If unattended death could be from a number of causes and bit later. What is the truth? It was also brown water conditions on my NE windward side, risky to surf/swim after rains cloud the water, due to sharks come in to eat the fish eating the debris. Moku'auia, Goat island, is .4mi. offshore as well..I HOPE this does NOT spur a 'shark killing fest' as happens elsewhere; Tamayo would never want that He was a TRUE ocean person. We all loved him; he was a well known N.Shore lifeguard...8 years; Always SMILING. To his Ohana: E ikaika hoʻi ʻoe B well and strong. I hope the public gives you PRIVACY.
