I read Kranz's book "Failure Is Not An Option" back in 2015 and it was life changing. Such an incredible book. I never in a million years thought I would get the opportunity to meet him. One of the great honors of my life was meeting Mr. Kranz in April of this year at the Lonestar Flight Museum. Amazing.

I'm almost done with it. I have never read a book that put me in someone's world view so well. I feel like I've sat down with him and listened to his stories. His style is clean, well organized, and yet surprisingly real in its emotions. His dedication to his controllers, his mission, and to America in the most sincere and unpolitical way is truly inspiring. No jaded jingoism, just a love of his country and his people that shines through a man that gets pumped up by humming "Stars & Stripes Forever" to himself on his way to do the big job. He makes me want to be the best at whatever I'm doing.

Always cool as a cucumber and sharp as a tack under the most stressful conditions. An absolutely legendary figure in the space program. Huge respect to this man. One thing I've never understood is that when the Apollo 11 lunar module ran low on fuel on landing, where did the fuel come from to get them back off the moon? It's not like there was an Exxon station on the moon
@TheLoxely2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure but as far as I believe it they had a descent fuel tank down to the moon and an ascent fuel tank back up to the command module. They might have been completely separate so you couldn’t use one fuel tank for the other. Or that if you used some of the ascent fuel there wasn’t enough to get back to the command module. Something like that.
@dogbirdgun Жыл бұрын
The LM is a two stage rocket. The lower stage gets you down. It then functions as the launch pad for the upper stage which gets you back up. Each stage has its own fuel.

As much as a great Man Gene Kranz is,people seem to forget other flight directors like Glynn Lunney. Lunney was the REAL hero of Apollo 13,but he is never mentioned which is a real shame.
@MaynardGKrebs-gv4vy4 жыл бұрын
I agree...
@OptimusNiaa4 жыл бұрын
I'd say there was no one REAL hero of Apollo 13. The White and Black teams did great work as the accident occurred and in the hours after. All the teams did great work throughout the rest of the mission. As well as Lovell, Haise, and Swigert. And the astronauts on the ground who supported the recovery effort. Several of the documentaries I've watched mention Lunney, and include him in the interviews, which is good.
@brucetharpe7622 жыл бұрын
I think Glynn Lunney and Gene Kranz shared shifts

I think the movie caused that, because they put all their focus on Kranz. I agree with Wedge, that was a team effort. But I still believe Kranz cursed and kicked the garbage can. 😁

I met this man and to this day he is still demonstrating how none of us have any excuse. I'd love it if he watched us land again on the moon. He also proves yet again that being 'old' is relative. If you're in your late 40s and think you can't get to NASA because you're too old, think again. We put a 72 year into outer space. Research and science do not discriminate.

@jonaskrarup6590 His severely stressed face indicates he knew it was a show, I would bet. Not holding the head up straight, ears practically touching the shoulders, curling up into a ball to hide. Closed hands in front of him nearly 100% of the time as a protective barrier. If he leans back away from the interviewer, any further, trying to escape the interviewer, he will fall backwards. The interviewer is not leaning backwards. Legs out straight keeping the interviewer away from him, more barriers, fear. Fear of what, why the fear?
