I'm from the northeast state of Mizoram. Many of the famous Mizo writers have spoken about Khushwant Singh especially his wit and humour. One writer whom I really like had a chat with Khushwant Singh. This was mentioned by another writer in his book followed by his jealousy of that guy for being able to had had that opportunity. This book became book of the year, Mizoram. There's many more of Mizo writer's admiration for Khushwant Singh.

He wrote about bawdy stuff, bordering vulgarity, because it SOLD. However, he wrote wonderfully well, in English. His memory, his knowledge of the scriptures, of Persian, Urdu, Punjabi, Sanskrit and his ability to translate that into "understandable" English , his ability to de - mystify and simplify complex verses into simple English is amazing. His anecdotal style is riveting. He wrote serious stuff too , reflecting the life and times of the era. A Train to Pakistan, The Mark of Vishnu are some that stand out.

He was very lucid writer. He had a very ribald sense of humour. But, he was definitely not a great intellectual.
