This song tells how western culture is overtaking today’s youth. It also mentions the pain of separation of the loved ones during partition of Punjab. There is beautiful line where he says that he is not in favour of partition (Sauda nahi pugda) and Chenab river (in Pakistan) is asking Ravi river (in middle of Pakistan and India) about the health of Satluj (in India). This just show the brotherhood among India and Pakistan. But today’s youth instead of focusing on these things are high on drugs and ruining their life. You have the rivers the wrong way around. The Chenab flows in Pakistan, the Satluj flows in India and the Ravi flows more or less along the border between India and Pakistan. As the Chenab and the Satluj are now separated (by Partition), the Chenab asks the Ravi how the Satluj is doing - 'Ravi ton Chenab puchda, ki haal hai Satluj da'. This line brings tears to the eyes of many Punjabis, both east and west of the border.

Ravi and Satluj both flow through the Indian Punjab to Pakistani Punjab and Ravi merges in Chenab first and then Satluj comes and merges with Chenab. That's why Chenab is asking Ravi about Satluj who is considered the youngest of the three. It does depict the sad reality of Partition, of how it divided the families and loved ones between the two nations.

Gurdas Singh Maan is one of the legends in Punjabi music. He writes and compose his songs. His every song like this one here has a message. He is 63 now. 5 yrs ago when this song was recorded he was 58. Does he look 58 yrs? He first came into limelight in 1980. He used to be star performer at Doordarshan (National and only TV in those days). I saw his live performance in 1983 at an Air force station Hindon near Delhi. I was studying in 7th standard then. He had performed free since he had come to see her elder sister who was married to Air force officer posted there. His look hasn't changed in these 40 yrs ... Diljit Singh Dosanjh is just a kid in front of Gurdas Singh Mann. Gurdas Singh Maan is the man who gave western touch to Punjabi music. I remember he had a huge music album hit in 1989-90. For the first time someone had given western touch to Punjabi music and I remember he had famously said ... Tuannu Double Roti Naal Saag Khuwane an ... means ... Make you ordinance eat Saag (Famous Vegetarian Dish of Punjab) with Bread. Bread here referred to western touch. There are hundreds of singers in Punjab ... Gurdas Maan remains especial because his music is not only joy but philosophical too.

The first Punjabi singer I ever heard was Gurdas Mann. He took Punjabi folk in particular and Punjabi music im general to a whole new level. He took Punjabi music to every household in India and abroad in the 1980s and early 90s. Daler Mehandi was the second big thing in Punjabi (pop) music, entering the scene in 1995.

I'm from Pakistan's part of Punjab and Gurdas Mann is a living legend. He is the torchbearer of folk music and poetry. Punjabi folk music is all about meaningful poetry and really enjoyable music. The punjabi signature tune is similar in many songs. Korbin's right there.

Gurdas Mann is the God father of Punjabi folk/pop music. He was the reason Punjabi folk came into mainstream. Also a interesting fact about Why all Punjabi folk singers sing in a high pitch voice. Most of them learn to sing while they are growing up doing farming. Two things that common in farming that you will drive a tractor and work bit far from each other in the field. In order to be heard by others or to themselves they had to sing at a higher pitch then the engine noise of tractor. Hence such high pitch and strong voices.
