Considering the disadvantages of a DCT, shorter service life, higher servicing cost, more complex and less reliable, you are far better off with a traditional automatic transmission, yes a DCT car will use about 5% less fuel but that saving is not worth the other disadvantages especially the much shorter service life.

Having owned a torque converter auto in the past and have been a passenger in a fairly modern DSG quite a few times, the DSG had me bothered slight clonking when pulling away from standstill, in traffic it seemed not to know what to do, only when the driver was trying to push the throttle pedal through the carpet did it change anywhere near what you would call smooth. Doing that comparison give me the torque converter box every time, and I believe the modern ones are quite efficient these days. Also I have seen a few car reviews where the manufacturer has used DCTs for the lower and mid range models in their line up but use conventional torque converters in their high end models, superior smoothness and less fuss and unpredictability me thinks.

Well how about this, you are having what WAS a nice Sunday drive but Bugger it, two lanes forming into one a mile down the road, lots of stop start, this is the worst situation for clutch wear un these abominations, normally you would just creep up behind the guy in front and occasionally be nice and let someone else slot in, however this slotting in thing would become a nightmare as leaving sufficient distance between you and the car in front to avoid this clutch "riding" is going to temp all the guys coming up next to you to slot in EVERY TIME. I would NOT have one of these bastard things in a fit.

When I compared petrol and diesel in earlier Sportage models I found the turbo diesel quieter (in the cabin) because it wasn't revving so high before each gear change. Turbo petrol might be a bit different. Will also depend on driving style but mine is leaning towards old-man style so trundling along most places.

So, we bought the 2.0L naturally aspirated SX, with the six-speed auto. The base engine in the second-to-base car. And the engine and transmission - it's perfectly fine. I've read in a few reports that it's underpowered. I think that the definition of "underpowered" has changed hugely in the last twenty years - underpowered used to mean having to get the manual transmission just so you could row the gears to keep up with traffic, or preparing for an upcoming hill 50 metres in advance so you had a hope of still doing the speed limit halfway up. When I was a kid, we had a Mitsubishi Pajero with the brand-new range-topping 3.0L v6. The Sportage is lighter, more powerful and faster than that thing ever was. Don't get me wrong - it's not a *powerful* engine. You won't impress anyone off the line with your 0-60 time, nor is it a heap of fun when you stomp on the acceleration out of a tight corner. But that's not really what we bought the Sportage for - it's urban driving, Bunnings and the market on the weekend, and the occasional beach trip. We'd shell out for the diesel if we did more high-speed driving (for the low-rev torque) or fun driving, or if we towed stuff. I think my point is, buy the diesel because you want it, not because you need it (unless you're towing, in which case, fair enough).

For an extra 6 grand you get diesel and awd it's a no brainer imo
@jeremybean-hodges6397
@jeremybean-hodges6397 2 жыл бұрын
@@Whyunounderstand Yeah but that depends on a few things - like whether you actually have the extra six grand in the first place. Six grand is a lot on a car that costs $40k. I'd argue that for the right person, the petrol and the cash is still a better choice. The fuel economy savings of the diesel are partially offset by the cost of diesel; it would take a lot of driving to make back that six grand. If you're spending the vast majority of the time pootling around urban areas, then saving six grand on the petrol - and having a really nice holiday instead - might be a better choice.

My wife and I prefer manuals. We are that “just pottering around, non-enthusiast, non-towing” owner you described. I’d be happy to save $2500 with the 2L 4cyl engine, and save another $2000 with the manual transmission base model. “Base model” in 2021 no longer means the stripped out shit boxes of the 90s, where you were lucky if you got a radio and you definitely wouldn’t get air con. We bought a base model Ceratopsian MY21 and it has everything we need. And upgrading from something 10-20 years old, even a modern “base model shit box” is going to be light years ahead of what you came from.

I like the low rev torque of diesels. Stop on some loose stuff and the extra revs required by a petrol engine would spin the wheels. But if you take off in a diesel, with almost no accelerator, you just drive off. On the downside, diesels do take longer to warm up. So if you mainly do very short trips then you won't see the same level of fuel saving, let alone the DPF problems.

Thanks John. Heard the latest dct in the Sorento is a bit of a dog around the car park. Any comment? Also, please be careful promoting your torches for spotting wildlife. Might be great for the kids, but our nocturnal wildlife don't need 2000+lumens aimed at them, especially from close range. It can cause damage to their eyes in the same way as it can damage ours. We do annual koala surveys and try not to use torches greater than around 850 lumens with a narrow beam. If you are directly behind the beam that's enough to identify eye shine and locate them. Kids can have just as much fun and learn the different colours reflected by the different animals. Now if your hunting ferals - different story. Just do it humanely!

Never owned a diesel before and only really drive to/from the shops and the occasional drive somewhere within 40km from home. I would prefer the power and toque the diesel provides but am worried that our style of driving wont warrant us having the diesel. This is a great report on drivetrains. I like the diesel/auto. I do about 17,000Km a year to work and back in a lot of stop start traffic and long road trips on weekends with a fair bit of gear in the back. I think the diesel is best suited for my use, I like the extra torque it provides. DCT is great but not for the driving I do Monday to Friday, too easy to abuse.

But by all accounts it sounds like he is misinformed telling me the top end GT diesel transmission is a 8 speed dual clutch…..correct?

as I said in the other video: I am over turbo diesel in passenger vehicles, no thanks, done with it, you do make some valid points about diesel being cleaner from CO2 view point but what about Nox? Also does the Shortage comply with Euro 6 which means it has DPF and SCR (re: ad blue)? Like I said done with turbo diesel in passenger vehicles, just another thing that John mentions about DCT being 6% more economical over torque converter, the turbo diesel in Sportage is torque converter so when John says it's 14% more economical it's only 8% since it's torque converter auto based. The NA 2L also is a downgrade to Euro 5 spec also it's no longer direct injection, it is now downgraded back to Multi Point Sequential EFI and the 6-speed auto is old generation torque converter . That leaves the turbo petrol with DCT, stupid of Kia/Hyundai to package them together, would be better with CVT over DCT in this format as the engine does have good torque curve and a CVT would take advantage of that torque curve better than awful DCT which needs down low torque in order for the clutches not to slip and thus overheat. Which leaves ot me scratch my head, the Americans get the 2.5L turbo petrol with torque converter auto + AWD, why do we not qualify? oh yeah some BS about RHD packaging, but if Mazda and Ford can do it then why cant Hyundai and KIA?

If DCTs and CVTs are the way things are going these days why are some car makers continuing to use these sorts of transmissions in everyday cars given that they spend two thirds of their life crawling, which is OK for CVTs but not for DCTs .if its all about fuel consumption and ease of driving maybe its time to develop something new that will cope with all the stresses that come with everyday modern driving condition.

The DCT is good but the VAG DSG is better in every respect. DSG does screw up but rarely and the rest of the time you're never aware of it. Kia doesn't have the connectivity and fuzzy logic and therefore does random things. The VAG, DSG has uncanny ability to do certain things and that's because the software tracks you in real time. The main issue with the powertrain is the "green" PHEV that has insane fuel consumption.

I own 2 bicycles only, do I get a carbon tax break for that ?. (seriously). I have come across diesel in a 1st world country (outback) which was cut/adulterated with either kerosene or bananas to make up bulk, suffice it to say that filters clogged up quickly and performance dropped off, it would be great to see a article describing the importance of fuel filter changes especially if in the outback, and the detrimental effect that high sulphur fuels have on diesel engines, or any engine for that matter. Diesel fuel is complex especially in the aviation sector but to any boaties out there on diesels, if you stumble across a government diesel stash on a remote island which is labelled Jet A or A1, use it as its great diesel, your engines will thank you for it. The Australian government has several Islands stocked with Jet A or A1 scattered all over the coral sea, so take note and don't be shy, in a emergency only of course. Remember to leave a thank you note on the hut please.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but this vehicle looks great, but its complete fail for me by not offering a decent Petrol 2.0l Turbo with a conventional automatic. It's just a bug bear for me to you MUST choose a diesel in a Kia and Hyundai SUV vehicles. I also agree the piano black in Kia vehicles is getting out of control. The graphics of the "analogue" guages look like somthing out of an old Bently. And that rotary shifter you are fond of, yes, its much better than the hidious hyundai button bank. But come on, pull backwards drive, push forward reverse if more logical than twisting. Take a look at reduced size electonic shifters in other brands. At least the interior does look like a Gangnam night club like the Sorento. As much as this feels modern, I'd now still push people towards a Toyota Hybrid petrol.
