Watching these videos are so awesome as a drummer and a huge Bonzo fan because you get to see all the things Bonham did when he played. its like the footage you wish they took of him back in the 70's so you could actually see what hes doing and duplicate it, and you nail like every song. I thought his sound could never be duplicated and only played but never with the same feel. But you're the first drummer ive seen to totally get that distinct Bonham sound and feel

I'm framing this comment on my wall! Thanks so much, man. I very much agree with you about wishing there were more footage of Bonham available. When I first saw the unedited footage from Australia 1972, I got a little teary eyed at the footage they shot of Bonham, especially at the end of Dazed and Confused and Moby Dick. If you've never seen it before, search for 'hefty derigible' here on KZbin and enjoy. I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but the kind of support you just showed me definitely keeps me doing my best. I'll keep giving these videos everything I've got.

Thanks for the Demo. I used to own a 1979 stainless kit. 24" 12" 13" 14" 15" 16" and I still have the 6.5" Supraphonic. The 15" was the best sounding drum on the kit. Big problem with that kit was that they were very, very difficult to tune. It wasn't until I bought my Gretsch kit in '87 that I had easy success tuning. Maybe I just sucked at it. Anyway, both kits sound great. I, however prefer the vintage kit. I like the 14" and to me, the vintage drums seem to sing more. I also like the very slight buzz in the floor toms. Great job and thanks again!
@KillerKev1961
@KillerKev1961 9 жыл бұрын
Fantastic tuning/micing of the kits. The high pitch tuning that Bonham used makes the drums sound almost funny w/o the micing/mixing. I just found and purchased a S.S. Bonham kit with the 10x14 that also includes a 12 and 13in toms. The owner bought it NEW in 1977. And I prefer the resonance from the original bearing edges to the re-issue edges. Also, from what I have learned, the shells on the r.I. are thicker than the vintage originals. Dude....you make that kit sound the way it should. And your playing is so reminiscent of Bonham that's its scary good!!!! Peace....
@KickItLikeBonham
@KickItLikeBonham 9 жыл бұрын
Kevin R. Thanks, Kevin! I tend to agree about the vintage shells. I decided to stick with the re-issues and sell the vintage kit (to help cover buying the re-issue kit), and while I'm still REALLY happy with the new set, part of me still really itches for the 70's shells. That's no fault of the newer drums. I just really like the idea of having the original shells. I'm happy to have them in Bonham sizes now, as finding a 70's 14x26 in the configuration that Bonham used, for a reasonable price, was not happening. Still, I'm fortunate to have either one, and will keep making the best out of them that I possibly can...

Both fantastic sounding kits to my ear. Great playing!! I must confess, I'm not a drummer, but stumbled upon your channel recently whilst looking for a drums only cover of "travelling riverside blues". Your cover is spot on. I subscribed straight away and watched most of your other Zep covers and I think it's the closest overall feel for the great mans playing I've come across to date! You have some very tasty kits at your disposal but as a bass player I have to say it's the Acoustic amp sitting to your left that I'm drooling over!! ;-D Great work man, keep the Led coming, I'm listening and playing along over here in England! :)

mlc4069 Ha, ha! Those Acoustic amps and cabinet will hopefully be popping up in a little more in the not-too-far-off-future. A guitar player I've been working with for a little while has been working on assembling all of Zeppelin's backline, so we're hoping to put together a project that utilizes all of it. My garage gets to be the storage facility for all of it...And thank you so much for the nice comment! I'll definitely keep them coming...

12/2020: Wow....a blast from the past, mine. I started playing drums in 3rd. grade.....first on coffee tables, dashboards, etc; first snare in 5th. grade. By 7th. I had THIS kit....in the living room. This was the late 1960's, and my folks thought having a drum kit would keep me grounded and entertained on the homefront; they were right. And playing along to Bonham and Zeppelin was a requirement of the times. We all did....because he was so great. I saw them in concert (4) times; what I really saw was....HISTORY.

Thanks for making this great video! Don't take offense to this. If you take me, you and a bunch of other drummers into your garage studio and play your kit, none of us would sound like Bonham. Well, his son Jason can fill in John's shoes quite nicely on all the Led Zeppelin songs.. As a matter of fact, he used to play in a band that he himself formed back before he joined Sammy Hagar and the Circle called "The Led Zeppelin Experience" and he was absolutely OUTSTANDING playing those tunes! Today, he can actually play like his late father did back in the '70's! Not surprising, because John taught Jason everything he knows about playing drums and it really shows!

I sat down at one in the music store many years ago price was way over 5k.... I remember adjusting the floor toms ......had quite a bit of weight to them...... I'm playing on a rag tag kit now but seeing the Bonham kits you've been playing , I've made my mind up.....I'm getting one ......Do you have anything you want to let go of ???? lol back to this vid very smooth great sound , I didn't notice if you mentioned what heads your using , I was jumping ahead to the drum playing... I thank you for the display of excellence.. The Bonham way -- Mighty..

Fucking excellent brother! I love how you started of with the Jan 9th '69 (?) Moby Dick solo, then the '73 Madison Square Garden solo... Just great.

Thanks for the acknowledgement KILB. :) I'm a guitarist here in Seattle ... I was out at Greenlake earlier today where Zeppelin played their 2nd US show at the Greenlake Aqua Theater opening for Three Dog Night... in late '68 or early '69. I think Vanilla Fudge/Carmine Appice (who got John his first maple double bass kit and in Ludwig sponsorship as well) was on that bill as well - via the Edgewater Inn mud shark incident filmed by Mark Stein. Damn bro ... I love listening to all the Bonham knowledge you kick down with these posts. Great, great stuff right here.

Been researching several Stainless steel kits, but Ludwig are definitely the best. Great drumming btw.

Great job on the video man! Stainless steel Ludwigs are on my bucket list. You should do one of these compare and contrast with the vintage Vistalite vs. modern Ludwig Vistalite. I picked up a JB Vista kit about a year ago. The more I play it, the more I love it. I also have a set of same size Classic Maples that sound great, but the projection and punch of the Vistalite kit is pretty amazing. Live the Vistalite really punch through with volume and clarity.

well well , comparisons take time, Ive done a few,, so thx.I am a vintage man through and through , not being bias , but the edges definitely make the dif. really notice it in the rack tom .nice to watch you evolve over the years.. I have recently joined the You Tube community with a channel. and am just learning to edit and small stuff like that. Very well done.

Billy Ray Smith Dude! Billy, your space is seriously impressive! I don't know if the camera makes it look that much bigger, but it looks like you have access to the whole basement of a department store (and enough drums to fill the whole thing). Seriously, seriously impressive. I've really enjoyed checking out your videos. I very much prefer vintage kits as well. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I now have three modern kits in my collection (including this stainless steel kit), but the majority are still good ol' fashioned 3-ply 60's/70's Ludwigs...

MrMojoRisin1967 WoW! thank you, Yer comments are appreciated as I am new to the You Tube Family, and like all of us am hoping for subscribers and more interaction like what were doin, so thx again.. Ah yes the space,, Ha ha ,... Its actually above my carport like an old truck parts mezzanine thing, a place to hide the body's ya know. Specially built for this purpose, [Vintage Drums]. I have a couple missing links right now but know they will come in time , that being , early 70s green sparkle, Bonham, and perhaps an ol' Slingerland,. Very grateful for your time spent on my site, and comments, I know ya'v heard it before ,but yer Bonham stuff, IMO, Is the best Ive seen. Keep it up, ttys. Billy Ray
