This is gotta be one of the most interesting martial art ever. Its not like other martial art, where everyone looks stiff, looks like there constipated. Rather, a very comfortable form and stance. There are so many great things invented in Korea, and i think it would be nice if ppl get more aware of it!!

I have been practicing Taekwondo for the past 15 years of my life...and I am ashamed to say that all this time I felt and thought that Taekwondo and Taekkyon were alike. Only until last night did I spend a few hours checking numerous sources and concluded that I was wrong. Strangely, however, this has only enhanced my fascination with Taekkyon and I hope to one day have the chance to learn it. I'm not Korean, but the Korean culture fascinates me.

T'aekkyon was for everyone, at the height of its popularity even the king at chosun practiced it. The only reason it became banned was due to gambling in tournaments but was only allowed to be practiced by the military, then the japanese came in and tried to obliterate it from existence. I did my thesis in college about this martial art...

many western people seem to misunderstand taekkyeon is a folk style, it is like sirrum (traditional wrestling) in the past it is universally known (but some are better than others), TKD is not a martial art, it is an umbrella term for the 9 public schools that existed in Korea, all of which first started with founders who practiced taekyeon as children (the older ones) or seen independance fighters use various martial arts (probably GyeongJu Lee style taught at shin heung millitary academy in manchuria to train independance fighters by Lee HoeYong), and just called the style taekkyeon as a generic name for korean styles. Korea is like 90% mountain. it is pretty common in Asian martial philosophy to use aspects of martial styles which best suit the person, in order to stay harmonious with your inherent nature or "constitution." because Korea had so many mountains and was until 8000 years ago a hunter and gatherer people, running up and down mountains made the people have unusually strong legs and thus culturallly using legs for combat developed. however Korea did not traditionally teach schools (much like traditional china) but instead kept everything in family or in the millitary or royal guard or temples. thus the oldest styles being clan, shaman, taoist, buddhist, millitary and later royal. taoist and buddhist styles had a lot more structure, millitary had mostly weapon and formation combat and is similar to that of China, shamanic styles are another topic all together and was developed to kill demons and ghosts and stuff (not many people practice this today) and clan styles (only a few clans seem to have retained their style, most peasant families would have no knowledge of a clan style, and even those in a noble or even royal line would have forgotten about it since the end of the occupation. TKD thus is a mixture of various older styles that the original 9 founders learned or observed, mixed with northern Chinese styles learned in manchuria, and Japanese styles learned after being drafted or volunteered in millitary in Japan. these 9 schools came together and modern TKD, are heavily influenced by just 1 of these schools. the lineage of modern taekyeon is probably from someone who was trained to do it for tournaments and defending small country side villages from bandits or corrupt officials who would abuse power. thus this lineage has a bit more structure and there was actually things to teach about it, however there are still no ranking systems in it, and there are no forms in it, as it is pretty much just sparring, and drills, which is appropriate for how malitia or "rightious armies" of korean history would have trained. My grandpa faught during the occupation, is a few years older than the oldest of the founders of the 9 kwons. while some of the things he taught me are vaguely similar to TKD, generally it is easy to recognize the difference. however there is also a difference from taekyeon (we have clan style) as taekyeon is generally much softer (there are hard versions that were demonstrated by the guy who re-introduced taekyeon in Korea, however this was not taught or practiced, he insisted that one should not hurt the opponant and the types of kicks used and taught would reflect this mentality). also "flying kicks are sacrifice attacks to knock a general off his horse, the person who did it would almost surely die afterwards, however with his death and the fall of the general, 2 armies find peace and hundreds or thousands of lives are spared, this is why it is glorious, not because of it's use in general combat" is what i was told when watching the "cool kicks" western and modern tkd were doing and asking if those worked. actually they do have a history, and have always been considered "cool" and glorious, but just as today, not considered practical (there is a reason why old school TKD demos always have those flying kicks reaching up like 8ft high or above, it is the height a general's face would be when sitting on a horse). so you cannot say TKD or taekyeon is better or whatever, actually both are kind of umbrella terms, and taekwondo is pretty much taekyeon + karate.

it was dangerous in the sense that Taekkyun taught people how to fight, that is why Japanese tried so hard remove any trace of Korean Martial Arts, that's why Soobak became lost to Korea. and i think u misunderstood him. He was trying to say that Taekkyun applies sudden, whip like strikes. He was not trying to describe the back hand strike as Unique to KMA

Point sparring is to utilize the moves learned. It is done in points for connections of the attack. While it isn't the true way to be ready in the streets it allows a person to get the feel of the art.

Things about the martial arts it that it improves itself really fast when there is some type of tournaments or competitions.Even though TKD started out by Karate masters, however, today's TKD is totally something else. It has vastly improved and differeinate on it's own by millions of TKD practioners in a world and their ideas applied during tournaments/sparring; and it has made today's TKD. Now TKD, is influencing today's movies such as ongbak

At 2:39, hosts talks about the attitude of Taekkyon of being relaxed and happy. Taichi instructor said the same to me too. For Taichi, the movement just had to be done correctly to work (required years of practice). Bill Walsh, the San Francisco 49ers coach use to train his players similarly. They were just suppose to do there jobs, no crazy emotions.

taekkyun motto is to defeat your Opponent without causing real physical damage. For example with their kicks they don't use their shin or their top feet to kick as in most martial arts do, but they use the bottom of their feet to do a kick push. It's a really good martial art. There some videos (I dunno what happen to them i can't find them anymore) where taekkyon beat a lot of karate and taekwondo guys.

Again i didnt say it copies capoeira (i never did this) all i ever said was that is very similar to eachother and it has a similar history behind it. I think i have to describe this kind of view a bit more : I wanted to say that it is amazing for an art to not even survive the kind of opression during the takeovers but also develop a bit more by the need to hide itself. That was my original statement !

There is a saying that for a beginner a punch is just a punch and a kick is just a kick. Then for an intermediate student a punch is not a punch and a kick is not a kick. Then for a master a punch is once again just a punch and a kick is once again just a kick. With experience you can point out the distinctions between different techniques but in the end the human body can only move so many ways and a roundhouse is still just a roundhouse kick whether it is from karate or taekwondo.

I have done shaolin kung fu, which is a very old martial arts and predates many martial arts, and we have all the kicks bruce executes. from hook kicks (one of lee's favourtie techniques) to side kicks, to sweeps. Bruce Lee changed his way of fighting according to movies. He used much shaolin technique in ETD since he played a shaolin monk.

It does work in a real world fight, as long as you know that it will eventually end in the floor... Any martial art can work since all martial arts are based on reality, the fact this one is a dance-based one like Capoeira doesn't make it ineffective...try fighting a capoeirista who has experience, he'll give any karate or kung fu black belt a decent fight if he knows what to leave out and what to use from his style.

Our culture is a liitle bit influenced from Ming. YES. It means that Korea was a Chinese dependency. The days before letting soul fall after the armed forces of Hideyoshi struck Korea were only one month. There were not the armed forces which stopped the attack of the armed forces of Hideyoshi in Korea. When Hideyoshi died, I did the talks of the cease-fire in Japan and China. Korea is not added to the talks. It means that the commander of the Korean armed forces was ming.

spinning, height, speed.. they all translate to power when used correctly. taken into consideration, one kick, whether placed to the knee, arm, ribs, etc, it WILL be detrimental. the head as a target, i think speaks for itself. look more into this martial art, and you see techniques that resemble that of jujitsu or other like martial arts. and i suppose, no matter what the martial art, it depends on the practitioner to be victorious.

I never stated korean martial arts are child-styles of japanese, chinese, indian or mongolian martial arts. All i wanted to say is that modern martial arts in asia are almost everytime descendant styles of those origin. Korean styles might've existed before the takeovers by several other nations and they might've been older. I even believe that most asian archery except kyujutsu are offsprings of korean archery. Mongolia btw is just a name the world gave that area.

I was comparing Japanese colonialism in Korea with only Nanjing rape (I am sure what happened after Nanjing rape in China was horrible too). The main difference is that there was no systematic Cultural eradication in China. This was not just stealing all historical documents, art, but to even eliminate the basic way to life such as language, customs, names, and all of them were planned. Likewise, in Korea, there weren't any massive war civilian murders.

Very interesting that the basic orientation with kicks and and the history behind the style is VEEEEEERY similar to capoeira, Taekkyon is younger than capoeira no matter what "experts" say i wont believe it was just discovered and is 100s of years old. thats just ignoring historical facts. also it turned into to public recognition when north korea started "reinventing" era like telling people Einstein was korean and stuff like that.

Now to be serious: 1. People switch martial arts all the time; it's hardly a basis of judging how "effective" your particular flavor of unarmed combat is. 2. All [effective] martial arts use the same principles. The different "styles" are simply the universal principles of the art of combat adjusted either to environmental factors or the founder's individual strengths and weaknesses. In other words, "style" is an illusion. Once you realize this, arguing about martial dick size is a moot point.

they're not saying "iku"「行く」even if it does sound like it. it's actually "ikeuh" and "ekeuh" (이크,에크), which is a form of exclamation in korean.
