My kick boxing instructor likes semi-ax semi-hook kick catching opponent with a heel. He says you potentially loose leverage and balance throwing it parallel to the floor. Also if the are closing the gap it's hard to throw a committed back hand or an elbow off it.

vision is fine but in sparing your sparing partner dont stay on place..you should go backwards or towards and the timing and except counter strike its not that easy as here you guys see..unless you spar some begginer dude he stay on place and let punch himself..otherwise you should being seriously hurt..its quite easy to see this..no once someone try it on me and he fall on ass..you should be really quick and atletic to try this on someone more advanced( only my experience)
