The reason they weren't more popular is because they were 20-30 years ahead of their time - before retro became cool.

yes - the Swing revival really came in the early 90s - they were already doing that kind of music in the late 70s/early 80s

omg , Prince was a copy cat, Kid Creole is the king of funk

Prince was a copycat - everyone is to some extent - but not of August Darnell. They were contemporaries. Prince was going strong in 1982.

Yes, prince was going strong in 82, and the first to admit Augusts influence. Hence his trying to write a song for him, with little success.

@@ShakesTheClown46 Just to be clear about it, August Darnell & Crew are like Straight Outta 1970's Bronx. There are deep strong currents of music flowin' (and Freestylin') down the Grand Concourse, but also that Subtle yet Deliberate Theater of Parody and Powerfully/Joyfully Grooved Funky Rhythms. But now to some POV's, that like Fundamental Creativity, that's all just another 'Act', in the Cut Purse/Throat Trenches of 21'st Century Musicology. But August & Some New Coco's, they're like Still Kickin' IT:-) Show some Respect!

Kid and his gang were more into exploring and expoiting the humour elements in their potpourri of musical influences. Prince was more serious-minded.

Dance, music, vocals, wardrobe they had it all. Why this NYC act was more popular over seas? I'll never know.

This concert was 42 years ago. The music hold up. It makes me sad to think that these Coconuts are about 63 years old now, assuming they were all 21 at the time of the concert. Thanks to video technology, they will be forever young and fresh.

We want, we Need More. Strong, hella Rhythmic, sorta Theatrical Music. Ritualistic one might ask? But this may be our last call, so ya wanna bet on the Guud Music. It's like a No Brainer. The Kid (and Crew) Is Hot.
