XKCDHATGUY WHY I LEFT: • My Return to KZbin a...
XKCDHATGUY METAVERSE: • The Internet as a Revo...
In 2010 a high school student known online as xkcdhatguy would take to KZbin, sharing his theory on what a hypothetical 4th dimension might be. The video was praised by the KZbin community for being easy to understand, and it has received close to 30 million views since being uploaded. Aside from the 4th-dimensional theory itself, people became somewhat obsessed with the young presenter featured. He seemed wise beyond his years. Many would ask xkcdhatguy personal questions about himself, but he never shared much if anything. The curiosities with xkcd grew further when one day he mysteriously disappeared from KZbin. What actually happened to xkcdhatguy? Today ill be telling the story of his rise to KZbin fame, and what caused him to leave the site.

Hey, great to see that someone on youtube actually posted a quality analysis of what's been going on instead of an imagined idea that I was "taken by the FBI" or similar thoughts. Let me elaborate on a few of the main points to help clarify. [continued below]
@thexkcdHatGuy
@thexkcdHatGuy 2 жыл бұрын
I never really "left youtube" as much as I simply wasn't in a place in my life where I felt like I had further meaningful things to say and also I had to spend a long time simply settling into trying to live in a financially stable way. Yes, I did lose my password but for a long time after that I didn't even have any intent to upload new content regardless. And though it's true that I was in a mental hospital, it was actually about 30 days and not 90, and it wasn't actually a significant juncture in my life. After a while, I started to develop some new ideas, and in some ways became grateful for having lost my account because it gave me time to think more and gain new experiences that would contribute to my ideas. Chief among these has been a health theory I've developed which encompasses the whole of why all foods are/aren't healthy or not, and how using this knowledge we could in theory make it so that any food is healthy using a specific technique which I came up with myself. I used to have a video about this, but I removed it due to many people saying that the video "sounds like an excuse for being fat." Yeah, about that... The reason I gained weight can be summed up in one word: seroquel. Without any dietary changes, I gained 100 pounds over the course of just a year and continued to gain a bit more after that. I am no longer taking this medication, and through that alone (again, no dietary changes or anything else) I have lost 75 pounds so far, down from 285 to 210. I am still looking to lose a bit more weight before I return to youtube once again, hopefully it won't be much longer now. When I do, I will republish the video I had just mentioned that I took down with a re-made script and of myself at a healthy weight. I also have a whole host of other topics I have in a backlog that I am going to be releasing in the future, so look forward to that! Also, these comments of my wife's screenshotted make her look bad. I have dealt with many people stalking me, following me to my home uninvited, and trying to find out my identity many times against my wishes. She had had enough, and I approve of what she's said.

Often times very smart people also have a depressed nature. They are so smart that they tend to analyze every single thing and it can become overwhelming. I’ve known people like this. They can also actually have answers to things that many people either don’t have the cognitive ability to understand or simple choose not to listen to. This can contribute to the depression as well. Good to see he’s battling as best he can.

@@sleepingninjaquiettime Emotional intelligence is more complex than just being sad or not. The emotions you're feeling in the moment have more to do with your brain chemistry, and well, deep thought is very expensive for the brain to maintain. It uses up a lot of energy and precious neurotransmitters to continuously form new neural connections. As a result, smarter people (really just anyone who uses their mental energy for abstract thought--mathematicians, artists, writers, philosophers, etc) typically have fewer resources left over for stabilizing their mood. It's probably why there does seem to be a correlation between high IQ and mental illness, like anxiety, ADHD, OCD, etc. It's not necessarily high IQ that leads to depression, but rather the natural limit of their brains to think. There's a thin line between genius and insanity, and the line is the amount of neurotransmitters left over. Maybe meditation and mindfulness would help, by ceasing all thought for a while. It could also explain why smart people are, believe it or not, also somewhat more likely to use recreational drugs. If they are lacking dopamine, it would be a relief to pop an adderall and feel a flood of dopamine, increasing concentration and mental clarity. Phrases like "ignorance is bliss" or "the truth hurts" might be on to something, but not because the truth is all that depressing in and of itself. It's just because the act of searching for truth is emotionally exhausting.

The mid-wit meme is true for sure - dumb people follow their instincts, which are often more accurate than the propogandized circular logic of the average person, but not as accurate as a smart person who's hashed it out. For example, take something as simple as hyperinflation. People living in trailer parks believe it's happening because they know the government doesn't give a fuck, and it's simple to extend that to our currency. Mid-wits rationalize it away because they often believe the news, and are intimidated by all the jargon, definitions, and self-serving logic of modern economics. They avoid discussing their independent thoughts on the matter and only parrot approved narratives, as they don't want to be called out as stupid. Intelligent people see past the snake oil and aren't afraid to call it as it is - if there's more money, the money is worth less. It's so fucking simple, but most people fear independent thinking as it may lead to ostracization, especially when you lack the intelligence to effectively back your position.

My heart goes out to him! He ius so smart and yes, the medications cause lots of weight gain. It is awful. I have seen lovely young women gain from 50 to 100 lbs. so one often has to chose between painful mental health symptoms or hunger that is never-ending and the associated weight gain. Bless him! @@SiriProject mental illness is common in humans, yes; however, many highly intelligent people do tend to develop mental illness. @Kidkromechan
@Kidkromechan 2 жыл бұрын
The idea of intelligence itself is there because of our consciousness. Our ability to imagine and see things from many dimensions is the power of intelligence. Animals do not have mental illness unless they have gone through physical trauma. Humans can have mental illness simply with the power of our imagination. We can think of the future so we get anxious, and we can think of the past which causes us regret/guilt, we can see positive things with a negative perspective and it becomes a painful thing, etc. So, the very fact that we are conscious is like a curse that makes us suffer because we see more and we feel more. So, intelligent people who see more than we do will obviously have a much more difficult time adjusting to the norm. That's why there is also quite a well-documented literature on 'The curse of knowledge'.

That's exactly it. Respect has diminished since the age of social media. Unfortunately, anyone that posts publicly online puts themselves in a vulnerable position. Parents that post their children on social media, mostly referring to family KZbin accounts where every minute of their life is made public, is not only invasive on their privacy but dangerous and leaving them vulnerable to all sorts of negativity. Sure, it makes them a minor "celebrity" and the income can bring them all sorts of happiness but the negatives are not worth the positives, in my opinion.

He even says "it was his blog where ""she found me"", and not "where we met". A vulnerable man and vulnerable woman are both vulnerable, so let's reverse the genders... If he was a vulnerable woman and it was a man who "found" her, and she dropped off the planet while looking healthy, taking care of themselves with healthy eating, and he married her quickly, posted that message saying that people who follow her media, which he also did, made her ill, sent her to a psychiatric hospital, so leave her alone... Next time you see her, she has lost the light in her eyes, clearly stopped the healthy behavior she had before, in a dark room. It would be clear the guy is not doing her good, but when the genders are reversed, some people ignore certain red flags. So, if his social media made him ill, why is he back to it? MONEY! Does anyone honestly think his empath wife would let him come back to the thing that sent him to a hospital, made him ill, for his sake? That was either not what made him ill, or they are allowing him to get worse for money. If he went from healthy guy with aspergers, to hospitalised? Anyone that is intelligent enough can see the flaws in the system that currently governs our society. Which in turn, can drive them into depression if they are emotionally capable. The masses have become desensitized to things that shouldn’t exist anymore. Most people are afraid of change, especially the ones that benefit from the current system, so you can be met with a lot of resistance.

"No. He didn't slip into the fourth dimension, he just took a break." The reality of him taking a break and solving issues within himself is actually an example of a person making a journey to the fourth dimension. Things that we don't usually deal and understand within ourselves are part of the complicated realm of a higher dimension. It's the reason why people who resolves depression and other issues within them tend to acquire perspectives and reasoning that are a lot better than an average human being. It's what you call choosing the path to the correct human evolution.

As someone with a seemingly similar worldview as hatguy, I can’t help but feel like he was led astray when he was diagnosed with schizo affective personality disorder due to his spiritual practices. As a psychologist who also focuses on rigorous spiritual development (primarily via meditation, lucid dreaming, astral projection, and entheogens), I know all too well just how poorly modern psychology, psychiatry, and neurology understands transcendental/mystical experiences. Hell, most practitioners in these fields either avoid the topic completely, or actively ridicule those who dare study anything even remotely related. When I was 12, my parents forced me to see a psychiatrist that misinterpreted my spiritual beliefs as schizophrenia and drugged me with Seroquil for months - all because I talked about chakra stimulation and energy work. That was 15 years ago, and despite being more skeptical of such concepts now, they’re not indicative of a serious disorder. I’m not entirely stable by any means; I’ve struggled with OCD, ADHD, severe insomnia, social anxiety, depression, and possibly mild Asperger’s syndrome my entire life. Moreover, I started going through a legitimate existential crisis at age 11, which became the driving force of my intellectual and spiritual pursuits. Trust me, becoming obsessed with existential issues like the meaning of existence, the nature of consciousness, epistemic uncertainty, and mortality before you’ve even started puberty can be extremely lonely, as very, very few children that age can relate. Hatguy seems to have been “existentially aware” from a young age as well, and I suspect he managed to induce some variety of mystical state/ego loss via his spiritual practice. Most psychiatrists and psychologists don’t understand the psychology of religion/spirituality, let alone the phenomenological dynamics of transcendental experiences. In fact, true spiritual breakthroughs are heavily stigmatized in the psychological community (and science in general). I’ve known someone who managed to induce a mystical experience via kundalini yoga, but because it led her to start dressing differently and rebelling at school, she was convinced that her “breakthrough” was actually a mental disability. I can’t imagine what kind of psychological damage might be caused by denying your own spiritual journey as nothing more than a neurological glitch. As a psychologist myself, I’m sincerely infuriated and embarrassed by the collective trauma caused by some of the scummiest practices in the field. Hate manipulative advertisements? That was us. Hate our obsession with standardized testing and IQ tests? Us. Sick of being told that your problems are wholly internal and not partially due to a widespread and long festering societal rot? Yeah, psychology tends to fail there, too. In my mind, psychology should serve the same societal function as religion and shamanism - that is to say, in its ideal form, psychology should be able to replace religion altogether. It only takes a moment of consideration to realize that psychology is the science of consciousness (or the soul, if you swing that way), yet it has largely avoided providing a healthy, pro-science spiritual framework capable of superseding organized religion. I think some dumbfuck psychiatrist somewhere gave hatguy terrible advice (and probably medication). When it comes to schizo affective personality disorder (or many other “disorders”), many psychiatrists still prescribe dopamine and/or serotonin receptor antagonists (e.g., Seroquil, Trazodone), which are incredibly sedating and mentally disruptive. Moreover, these types of medication can cause serious weight fluctuations. I’ve studied the psychology of mysticism and religion for nearly 20 years, starting in middle school and continuing to this day. Throughout that time, I’ve learned a great deal about spirituality and the nature of the “mystical experiences” reported by every major religion throughout all of human history. I’ve had dozens of visionary experiences, including satori breakthroughs, astral projections, lucid dreams, and run-of-the-mill visions. I’ve since finished degrees in psychology and philosophy, and spoken substantively with countless professors and students alike. I doubt I have to convince any of you that both fields have stigmatized the study of mysticism so heavily that even mentioning it can be enough to ruin your reputation. I’ve never simply mentioned theories of mystical experiences; I’ve dedicated my entire life to studying them. Trying to do sound scientific research on the nature of mysticism is immensely challenging, but prioritizing fundamental existential concerns from a very young age is even harder. Nearly everything about our society feels barbarous and cruel. Being forcibly entrapped within a system you consider highly unethical is both radically isolating and profoundly distressing. Most of our psychiatrists and psychologists are primed to diagnose people who’ve undergone radical spiritual transformations as delusional in one way or another. In truth, one of the most common elements of mystical experiences is ego loss, which is completely antithetical to schizophrenic delusions. Through the dissolution of ego, one can transcend the limitations of their own biases and preconceptions. When utilized correctly, this state can improve our ability to reason and decrease our ideological rigidity.

There have been at least a few people who worked with a spiritual psychotherapist like yourself to actually try shamanic training at the exact time their schizoid patterns started being recognized. The people whom we would normally consider schitzophrenic who tried this approach, as compared to those who tried medication and psychotherapy, had far improved mental health after receiving validating, gentle handling and teaching by shamans in other cultures, and surprisingly, did not require medication. The ones who went the standard route for our culture lost friends, family, and had worsened job prospects and overall quality of life. No one is surprised by this, yet no one wants to take spirituality seriously. The west simply does not have the tools to see gifts like this, and refuses to pick them up. I believe our barbarism is indicated by that, the two go hand in hand. Of course the dominant cultural belief is held by the most brutish, the most willing and able to take over everything they can. I hope we are just in an era, like the dark ages with cell phones. We are still not that far off. It's an emotional dark ages today. Perhaps it will pass and change into something gentler one day after we're long gone.

William Monsour: kudos for writing out your thoughts in a day that squashed little text boxes has erroneously convinced most people that one 8x10" page thought with a little support or elaboration is just volumes of unnecessary wordiness. I, too, came to the same conclusions about spirituality until I experienced something that I'd like your take on. Whether you'd think my own mind was capable of somehow orchestrating an event that had to begin with something happening in some factory a month prior, or my own mind somehow deeply affected happenchance repeatedly on a level that would make any lottery player a billionaire, some programmer of reality programmed it, or God really did it as indicated...? My favorite ones are when someone assesses it and comes to the conclusion I'm lying, because they don't believe in any of the above, yet it was for all practical purposes statistically impossible so therefore it must be a lie. Hallucinations or delusions are out because I have all the objects and dates involved for others to see. Let me me know and I'll tell you what happened. It takes a couple pages at least to tell.

It's disheartening that his struggles could not be recognized, but he himself seemed to be in his own realm and did not care and I think that's a win.

I don't like the way society tends to 'normalize' giftedness, as happy and outgoing types with stable social lives. The stark truth is that on top of all of the enhanced cognitive abilities, many gifted types struggle with autism, bipolar, and schizoid like symptoms. True creative (and intelligent) productions are rarely born out of a healthy mind.

Thats a myth, thats not how intelligence works. Our memory works exponentially, so if you google the same questions a few times and tell someone, you are going to remember it for good. Its like more information you have in your deep memory means more connections to be made. Some people with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses are intelligent, but lumping all people who are educated and curious into this category is wild. Idk where you read that, but you can fact check it in two seconds. You’re literally on a device watching this video. 🤦🏻‍♀️ scientists use this thing called Occam’s razor, you should become familiar with it before spreading misinformation.

@@ingreedzz5204 I do not have schizophrenia but from what I've heard, the hallucinations and delusions are extremely convincing. Not to mention, if it's affecting your sleeping habits you can get even more unbalanced, mentally speaking. A small personal example, I used to have tactile hallucinations of bugs crawling on me. No matter how many times I checked or told myself it was just my brain, they felt completely real. I cannot imagine dealing with that on a large scale that affects all your senses, as it does with more severe schizophrenia. It's much more difficult to recognize in oneself and fight than any of us can imagine. You're describing me. I've worked in the private sector under Lockheed, Northrop, Raytheon and NASA. High intelligence and genius is a very real curse. You feel like an alien in social settings. The result is isolation from the external and a substantial amount of time reflecting internally on the bigger picture. My family has to coerce me to speak. I enjoy the silence and from the outside you'd speculate I'm doing nothing. That couldn't be further from the reality always working out the steps, problem solving, making things better. I've come to find some peace with age. My early years were tremendously confusing and a level of maturity had to be reached before I could tap into brilliance properly.

I remember him from when he was first on KZbin, I graduated in 2008 from Mount Pleasant High School and I was friends with someone at that time that acted similar to him. I, to, am on the autism spectrum as high functioning, but back then it was diagnosed as Asperger’s before the the DSM-5 and the IDC-11 changed it to be apart of the diagnostic umbrella of autism spectrum disorder. I didn’t know I was diagnosed as autistic until 2014, my parents kept it from me, but my point is that when I watched his first videos, I knew he was one of us and that he was most likely to good for this world like a lot of us are and that life would quickly drain him like it did me and still does. This world, especially the US is way to illogical, evil and so I feel that it isn’t our fault at all that it tends to break us down easily by all the evilness in this world, but we’re also not the same in some aspects. I applaud him for exposing his knowledge, ideas and personality to the us and I actually would like to meet him someday if it were ever possible. This is a great human.

the thing is that even if we want to help anyone understand this world, people like to criticize and hate. It is difficult to present anything to a person without exposing yourself to criticism. If someone is hypersensitive and affects them the most, intelligent people have no chance of becoming a public figure. we prefer to operate on our own territory and on our own terms. without much fanfare. If you want to discover the truth about the world, connect with the universe. connect your heart with your head, turn off your phones and truly connect with yourself internally. the truth is within you and what you consider reality is created. As a person also in the spectrum who is raising a couple of children on the spectrum as well as having a friend who has schizophrenia it can all be quite a struggle. Being social can be very difficult. There is a lot of pressure about how to communicate effectively with others and how to not let people see how you in your mind don’t always feel like you are even a member of the same species. Like you know logically that you are but it doesn’t feel that way because the nuances of body language and conversation feel confusing. Then for that poor man to add a schizophrenic diagnosis on top, that is rough because from what I understand that can create another dimension to all of the aforementioned struggles. I hope always has strong and loving support. I am glad you covered him so respectfully and completely. I can’t wait to check out his videos and share them.
