Kid Kicked Out of Class For Gadsden Flag Refuses to Back Down, Goes Viral

A 12-year-old boy from Colorado is receiving praise among many for refusing to back down after he was removed from class for donning a Gadsden flag patch on his backpack. The famous patch, designed during the Revolutionary War, includes a rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread on Me." But despite the historic nature of the symbol, 7th grader Jaiden Rodriguez, who attends The Vanguard School, a charter school in Colorado Springs, was allegedly told the symbol violated the school dress code.
The incident immediately went viral after video recorded by the boy's mom, Eden Rodriguez, purportedly showed school administrators explaining their issues with the Gadsden flag. "The Tuttle Twins" author Connor Boyack, who posted the clip of the interaction to his X profile, joined CBN's Faithwire to offer some history on the Gadsden flag, and to explain the backstory surrounding how Jaiden's story went viral.
"The Gadsden flag ... was named for Christopher Gadsden," Boyack said. "He was a delegate to the Continental Congress. He designed it in 1775 right as things were cooking up in the American Revolution." The flag, which has continued to make political statements in recent years, was flown on ships and was originally seen as a sign of unity among the 13 colonies that were united against the British.
However, according to Rodriguez, her son was told he had to remove the patch or not come back to class. The viral video of the aforementioned meeting shows a woman telling the family, "The reason that ... we do not want the flag is to due to its origins with slavery and slave trade."

When I was in 5th grade (a very long time ago), our class had to write reports on a topic of interest to us. I wrote mine on rattlesnakes, because they were part of my daily life, where I lived, and my mom was a herpetologist, so snakes were something I was familier with. I put a color drawing of the Gadsen flag on the report cover, call it artistic license. Rattlesnake flag for a report on rattlesnakes. My teacher had a meltdown, graded my report as a "D-", and called my mom to tell her about my inappropriate choice of report cover. Don't tread on a rattlesnake. It was a wordless pun, and a good one. My dear mother had the teacher in tears, and my report graded as "A+", by the end of the call. I may be the original kid who is guilty of appropriating the Gadsen flag. Don't tread on me.

Public schools should not have the right to pick and choose what messages they allow their students to express. Since schools are places of learning, they do have the right to regulate the manner in which the students express themselves; however, it has to be consistent. If you allow flags to be flown then you need to allow ALL flags to be flown. If you allow slogans on clothing, then you need to allow ALL slogans. To claim that a flag sewn onto a bookbag is "disruptive" is the most disingenuous argument I've ever heard. The implication that people who are "triggered" by the flag have no responsibility to control their own reaction is beyond ludicrous. They get to wear shirts that say "my body my choice" and we have to put up with it even if we disagree. All we're asking is for the same rights to apply in reverse.

For those bagging on the nice teacher lady, teachers do not know everything. Neither do any of us. She was probably a parroting a memo and following an unreasonable district policy. An ignorant district policy. On the other hand, I am not completely sure of this I am not an attorney, by recording the conversation "secretly" without apparent consent, the kid's mum seems to have violated the Wiretap Act (1968?). Shame on her!

Before you go casting shame, you could try a simple search. Wiretapping is recording without either party's knowledge. Colorado is a one-party consent state for recording conversations. And the boy is the consenting party.

Not casting shame, but under the Wire Tap act, it can be a recording without the knowledge of an individual who is involved. That was the short search. We have had this in my state where one politician of dubious character was recording another politician without his knowledge. Politician number two was of dubious character was well some believe. Politician number two, decided not to make an issue of it. Why? Since they were both of the same party, party unity. Regardless, I would hope next time a school district anywhere in our country institutes such an asinine policy, parents should go to the root of the issue, the district office.

GOOD points. I have to add however that there is some understandable confusion due to its fairly widespread later adoption by the KKK . This doesn't automatically make it a KKK symbol per se or undo its earlier history, but, it does make the confusion & the stance of the school far more understandable. Some of the comments seem to suggest that making a mistake (or at least one which hints at politics they disagree with) is worthy of dismissal if not worse.
