Really? Their albums were from 88-91. EPMD, NWA, Big Daddy Kane, KRS One, Slick Rick, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Too Short, Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, Doug E. Fresh and Biz Markie were killing sh*t from 88-91. Kid N Play made your childhood though? Ok

That’s the way it was. You always had to prove yourself first and that was within the city and outside. For example, if you introduced a Brooklyn MC in Manhattan, the Brooklyn dude was going to get boed until he proves himself. Even if you were from up the block, that’s how it was going to go on this bock. Plus, kid and play is commercial. NYC used to be about bars and skills for the most part.

@@AChildofSmokeyhollow ..I think most rappers want to rock a crowd and have their music appreciated. Too Short is a legend, but I can name 10 rappers from the Bay who are better rappers than him. The game changed where it’s not the best rapper who excels, but it’s depends on other stuff like production, image, gimmicks, street image, location, cosigns, money, etc. There are true MCs everywhere though. I think Willie D is a true MC.

Ready Red was from New Jersey and the Geto Boys early sound was heavily influenced by Red’s touch which was thoroughly east coast influenced. That early sound would have been something different without Red. The gritty lyrics was Houston urban life late 80s and early 90s which was grimy, all that candy paint, sippin lean and wearing Versace shades came later. Before that it was the grittiness portrayed in the lyrics; but, Red’s choice of samples paired with the lyrics is what made it special. Shout out to Ready Red from San Anto , Texas/Homestead and Langley on that north side.
