I teach at an elementary school, and after watching this (for the first of the current count of 20 times), I sent out a mass email to the entire school sharing it. I have had so many teachers- including our principal and vice principal - thank me for what they view as a tool to teach the kids how to get through this... new development in our nation's history. It's also a great lesson for the grown-ups (let's face it... ESPECIALLY for the grown-ups). Thank you for your wisdom, Kid President.

Let's not forget that through disagreement we can also find understanding and new perspective. :D That requires that stuff you mentioned here, listening and taking a step back before you answer. Opinions aren't set in stone. Sometimes you find out something new when someone else tells you theirs and maybe you end up changing your opinion. It's OK. It's a part of communication. Don't just agree to disagree. Learn to tell the difference between personal preference (like your favourite colour or your favourite food) and what's a conversation about ethical values or facts. Sometimes people are trying to tell you that they have an ethical principle and if you do not engage in a proper back and forth dialogue about it, listen to what they have to say, they may think you're just not the type of person they want to hang out with. Sometimes they are trying to relay information to you, to help you understand your opinion may not be as great as you thought. So if you really value the people around you, don't hold your opinions like they're an unchanging sacred thing that won't ever change. Listen and take a moment to assess your opinion, try to reach an understanding. The best outcome isn't always "let's agree to disagree", but rather "I understand your opinion, it makes sense to me". You can always disagree about personal preferences, but at least aim to agree about other things. ;)
