Kid Vs Mom - Healthy Green Vegetarian / Plant Based Smoothie Challenge - featuring Kale, Cucumbers & Green Tea!
Kid decides to put mom up to a green smoothie challenge! Ok, ok.... mom talked kid into it, to encourage her to get in some vegetables. Hey, it worked! :o) So what if the kid has never made a smoothie before or used a blender? This was fun anyway, because it was her first time being filmed on video - a good learning experience all around.
I am returning to a more plant based diet to improve my own health and lose weight - and I am encouraging my children to go for nutrient rich food over empty calorie junk - and therein lies the challenge. Making it taste good so they really truly like it.

Anything can go into a smoothie - we have 3 or 4 components:
BASE: you need a liquid base. I avoid dairy or citrus here! Fruit juice - apple, grape, pomegranate, etc. ; green or herbal tea; almond/soy/cashew/hemp milk (these are all non-dairy if you are not familiar)
GREENS: anything & everything!
SWEET: any fruit chunks, fruit juice, honey, maple syrup, raw sugar, coconut palm sugar, agave, etc.
NUTRITIONAL BOOSTER (optional): ground flax seed, chia seeds, blackstrap molasses, ground cinnamon - and more. Thease amp up your nutrients!

Kid recipe - blend till smooth 1-2 minutes in blender in any order:
1 cup brewed green tea (she used loose fresh - use any green or herbal tea of your choice)
1/2 a cucumber, peeled and sliced
1 cup baby spinach
1 stalk celery, chopped
2 tbsp organic honey
ice cubes
Mom's recipe - blend till smooth1-2 minutes in blender in any order:
1 @ 18 oz bottle of Bai5 antioxidant infused beverage- Molokai Coconut (from Costco) - you can use anything!
5-6 cups of chopped raw kale, pulled off stem and washed
4 large strawberries (I used organic)
1/2 cup frozen mango chunks (Costco)
1/3 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup baby spinach, with stems
2 tbsp blackstrap molasses
1 tbsp golden flax seed, ground fresh
ice cubes

In the end, we called it a tie! Kid's was light and fresh, channeling the essence of fresh cut grass, if pureed grass actually tasted good. Mom's was thick, rich green and tasted like berries, though there were only 4.
