Could even go with a composite for the nose cones. Thin alloy for the outward facing surface that would take the bend well and back surface reinforced with fibreglass for strength and dent resilience. A more basic composite could be flexy ply faced with aluminium. Just the shape itself will also add rigidity. Another solution would be to go down a polycarb route but these would effectively be sacrificial panels. Plain aluminium that's attached WELL is probably the most speedy and easy approach and has been used on fairs for many decades. A few dents add character to what is, after all, a vintage ride!! But consider adding fluting/ ribbing to add overall panel strength and tie-in with the early space aesthetic! 👍 Thanks for the video (UK viewer) 👍

Use this as a template and go diamond plated aluminum all the way around. Also use aluminum angle for the frame and supports.

Have you considered ABS? It bends pretty easy with a heatgun. If it gets dented, just heat it up again and push it back into shape.

For the front how about radius bending plywood. Here are the general specs from Columbia: 2 ply construction: Rotary peeled hardwood back. Thin veneer face 3 ply construction: Rotary peeled hardwood outer plies. Thin veneer inner ply. No face or back.Thickness: 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″, 3mm, 5mm, 8mm or Panel Size: 4′ x 8′ Long grain or 8′ x 4′ Cross grain.

If weight is not a huge issue 'bent' plywood is hard to beat. The company I work for uses it quite a bit for furniture frames at ¾" but even at ⅜" it is surprisingly strong. To clarify while we call it Bent plywood it is actually molded during the lay up process and is quite ridged. While there are companies that make it to order for your use you can probably make it cheaper and easier.

Great video Pete. You may want to check out Harbor Sales. They carry MDO including pre primed and a lot of other composite materials. They also offer CNC cutting.

For the front and rear panels, look at FRP panels. They're for bathroom walls. Most Lowe's have them in textured, but some have them smooth or can order smooth.

im thinking some sort of thicker plastic sheeting for the front and rear maybe a plastic 55 gal drum or i think you can get some like shower wall sheeting from the hardware store but it will be on the thinner side, its a really good think you went with the laser cut wood, this would have been a much longer project if you had to cut all that by hand and then piece it all together not to mention i think you have 3 more to do lol, i assume you will paint it all together once its done? i feel like taking it apart and painting it it would be better but much more time consuming and risk of scratching the paint while re assembling.

Great job Pete I was thinking outside the box a little for the front maybe you could frame it out a bit with wood and use a heavy duty marine canvas fabric instead of a solid hard material 👍

Is it worth building a fiberglass mold for the nose piece? Reinforced with PVC pipe heated and bent to the proper radius? I've been watching too many boat building videos.

you know you could do a wood, it would be super rigid and the same material as the body and make paint matching easier take a look for "How to bend a piece of 3/4-inch plywood" by "Stumpy Nubs" on here...

Great video Pete. For the fronts of the cars you might want to check out a local sign shop. They have a lot of different materials. I know there's some rotomolded sheets that will bend and you can get it in different thicknesses. I have a good source if you need or just roll some 16 or 18 gauge sheet steel depending on how heavy you want to make it. I have a slip roll that's probably wide enough for that.

If you don't want to use metal for covering in the front and back, puck board is an alternative. It's easy to work with as it can be used on contours and it's not overly expensive while still being able to take a lot of abuse.

Another great video. Do you know how much the original tubs weighed? Although it does not look like you're building them any heavier than the originals. What are you going to paint them with to protect them from the weather? How are you attaching the chains?
@PeteRondeau
@PeteRondeau Жыл бұрын
I don't know specifically how much they weighed, but as much as possible these are built like the original. These may be a little bit lighter because some of the internal edge bracing is smaller. For protection, we are starting with MDO plywood which is intended for making outdoor signs so we've got that going for us. After that they will be primed and probably painted with automotive paint. I may also end up making covers for them down the road. For the chains, there are two large U shaped steel straps- one at the front and the other at the rear. The car is cradled in the strap and the chains are hooked through holes at the top. So really, none of the forces of the chain are transferred to the tub

Hey Pete, I'm particularly intrigued with this part of the build, I use MDF/ply, coach bolts and T-moulding a lot (custom arcade cabinet/machine builder) and loving the care and finish of your work - maybe use a rubber mallet for your T-moulding, no scratches! - I re-watched one of your older videos yesterday (I think it's your first carnival ride transformation vid) where you stated you wanted to find a way to mount all the components to a custom trailer, any further thoughts with this?
@PeteRondeau
@PeteRondeau Жыл бұрын
You're not the first person to call me out on my use of a claw hammer for inserting the T-molding- I won't make that mistake again! 😂. The racking is something I always have in the back of my mind and led to the decision to do the angle iron on the bottom of the car but I don't have a fully formed plan yet. The thing that drives my thought process there is that I don't want to end up with a lot of extra pieces that have to be stowed when the ride is in operation.
