Great video Pete. I really enjoy your foundry work & your explanations are first class!. I really love your vids on ride setup. I used to go to the fairgrounds & watch the workers setup rides when I was a boy. I went to the circus ground too, to watch the bigtop raising.... I had no money so all I could was watch,lol

Thank you so much! You know, just this morning I was wondering if you were still following along. I actually checked my subscriber list to see if you were still there and it wasn't probably 20 minutes later that you left this comment. Quite the coincidence! Thanks for your always kind words. I would say everything I know about casting metal came from either you or the Gingery books.

Hats off to you Pete, you've more patience than me! ...but a terrific result! Probably better made than the originals!! So, four per car..? Like I said, more patience than most. Nice work!!

There are certain things I have a lot of patience for, other things I want instant gratification. Fortunately for this project I don’t mind the slow grind. Just a handful each week and they’ll be done in no time! At least that’s what I keep telling myself. LOL. thanks for following along!

For the 3D print you might have had an easier time using the acetone trick to get it to melt a tiny bit :)

I've done that in the past with mixed results. I tried it back in my video about making a replacement for one of the missing stepper motor covers on my CNC machine retrofit. In addition to smoothing it, it actually caused the part to shrink. I didn't want that to happen again. This part is much smaller though and may have worked well.

Great video. Would it be worth 3D printing a second one and try casting 2 at a time? You mentioned having enough aluminum to just do 2.

Yeah, it is worth a try.

Hi Pete, great video. If you don't mind me asking, whats your green sand mix consist of and what type of aluminum are you using? Regards Kevin

It is called Teton Black 180 mesh. It is water rather than oil based. I like it, I noticed some areas on the piece where I was working the sprue area with my fingers and the cast actually picked up some fingerprint details. The aluminum is some scrap extrusion I have so its a mixture of fairly nice stuff, but I don't specifically know what any of it is.

I really enjoy your videos. I have a question about your cast. Since there is a flat side, why couldn't you just make one mold and poor directly into it instead of making 2 parts to the mold?
@PeteRondeau
@PeteRondeau Жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. I was actually going to mention that but forgot. I absolutely could have done that but I was trying to avoid a sink mark on the flat side of the part. If you look at where the metal was poured in, as it cools, it pulls the metal in. That is what the back of the part would have looked like. But, then again it is the back of the part and really wouldn't matter. So, in this case it could probably be done either way. With as many as I need to make, I will probably give it a try and update in a future video. It would also ensure that I have enough metal to cast 2 at a time.

Thanks for explaining that. I have no experience in casting and was wondering why.

would it be possible to have two of those brackets in the same sand mold, but filling up one at a time, like two separate molds casts in the same cube of sand?

The only thing about casting is that it can be tricky sometimes. But you have really nice results.

I'd be more concerned if I was casting something mission critical like an engine block... Something where hidden internal imperfections would be a big deal. But these are mostly decorative. As long as they look good and don't break when you touch them, they are good enough for the application.

That's just a regular old first generation Creality Ender3 with a lot of updates. Put it in an enclosure, added LED lighting, moved the electronics outside of the enclosure, etc.
