THAT IS INSTANT DEATH. Im thoroughly amazed at how limited information came with some of the most early popular games. I didnt know what I was doing in this game... I just went around shooting things. Just seems like the theme to early nintendo days was to gimmick the first level so you can overpower the rest of the game. These vids are really interesting.

I just got the 1cc on SS yesterday (hence here looking for my next nes game challenge) it’s tough but the difficulty is definitely over stated; it’s a memoriser, apart from 1 or 2 random moments everything is the same every time you play, you just need to learn what’s coming up. It’s also a really fun game when you master the mechanics, the nerd gave it a bad rap 🙂

After 36 years, I have finally beaten Kid Icarus for the first time because of this video. Everyone I knew played this game, but I don't think any of us ever made it past Stage 1-2. I never knew how much was involved in this game, the different level designs, the level up systems, or what the damn items did. I never thought I would see the day! I'm a recent subscriber, but I've watch a few of your videos now and they are a treasure. Thanks, man!

Level 1-2 is by far the hardest part of this game. If you can get by that, it just gets easier. This game is one of the best games ever made. It's a damn shame it never got a real sequel.
@Clery75019
@Clery75019 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperN1ntendoChalmers Kid Icarus was developped by R&D1 team (Toru Osawa directed by Gunpei Yokoi and Satoru Okada) only a few months before they started a much more ambitious hardware project: the Game Boy. Therefore it wasn't developped by Miyamoto's team (R&D4) which will be dedicated in developping softwares for Nintendo a couple of years later when it became Nintendo EAD. Toru Osawa will then join that team and will later become the script director for Zelda Ocarina of Time. But yeah I agree with you, it's sad Kid Icarus hadn't any sequel as this game had a huge lore potential for further expansions.

Absolute childhood favorite. Beat at least a dozen or more times in my life and I thought I knew everything thing about this game hands down. Nope, I was wrong, I had NO idea you could intimidate the shop keepers. That would have been SOO helpful as a kid. I would grind a lot for hearts in most levels, so I was always on top with the powerup arrows. I always wanted feathers, but they were to darn expensive and I did not know the patterns to the treasure chambers, so it was like winning the lottery if I actually made it to the final pot and won an expensive item! The memories. Great channel, just discovered it a few days ago and I absolutely love it.

Hmm i recall back in the day, in the very start of the first level is a shop, with really useful items that you have no hope of ever having collected enough to buy - but if you held down a certain set of controls it allowed you to buy the item on credit, and then pay it off with later collected funds. (it was something like up or down or something and you could buy it anyway even if hearts go negative) It was in a strategy guide i had back in the day, but so far all i can see online about that trick is the a+b lower price trick. It tended to make things difficult in later shopws however if you had not paid it off yet, it became a handicap.

Making an arcade cabinet soon, i expect i'll attempt again for the first time in 30+ years. It's a shame Nintendo didn't do much with the IP. I could see an epic SNES title that never happened... oh well. I guess he's in Smash now?

I used to think this game was impossible because I had also never gotten past the first level! I agree that Nintendo shoud have done something more with the IP. I don't think its too late for them to make a cool new Kid Icarus, but its definitely a shame we didn't see one on the SNES.

Oh wow, thank you! I played this game as a child so many times. I managed to beat it, but never got the best ending. I’ll also never forget the code which was written in pen in the game manual from the store I rented it from: ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS!

I almost mentioned that code, but I was worried it would cause confusion because it doesn't work on the Nintendo Switch version. No idea why they messed with the password system - very weird!

This game is one of the best examples of the "Nintendo Hard" trope from that era. Particularly because the game *immediately* hits you with a series of super-precise jumps, where if you miss and dont have a feather (and you probably wont) you'll have to start a very long level all over again. And then you get even more really hard jumps like that over and over and over... most platformers take at least some time to build up to the really tough jumps, but this one just does it from the start. I'm betting a ton of players back then found themselves stuck, unable to ever reach that first fortress. And then there's the very hard to get healing items, constant enemies, spikes and lava everywhere, and entire game mechanics that are just never explained. As much as I just adore retro games, it's easy to see why game design in general tended to push away from that stuff, even in indie games modeled after the old retro style. Well, usually games these days try to avoid that stuff, not always. You still get games like Dark Souls that just go "LOL do the last 2 hours over again because that hidden zombie just pushed you off a cliff".

I'm honestly kinda mind blown with how many little mechanics there are in Kid Icarus. I beat it on the 3DS some years ago but I had no idea there was stuff like experience or score that you were supposed to keep track of. No, I kinda want to go back with this newfound knowledge and see how much of a difference it'll have. I wonder if you can intimidate the store owners on the 3DS version by yelling into the microphone. I feel like I remember that being the way you did it on the Famicom from an episode of Gamecenter CX. Thanks for yet another useful guide!

There is a password system in this game too! I remember two passwords clearly DANGER !!!!!! TERROR HORROR sent you to the last level and you're completely invincible, but you're stuck with the plumed hat ending. ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS gave you unlimited life, which means you could only die to...well, pits.~

Played this game as a kid a ton. Even had the nintendo players guide. Had no idea about what the hammers were for. Or the experience points. I got pretty far. Got turned into an eggplant in that big dungeon got lost couldn't find a hospital and that was basically the end of my playing this game.

Metroid released in August of 1986 in Japan and Kid Icarus in December of that year. Kid Icarus released in the US before Metroid by just a tiny bit. I would say the "Metroids" you see in Kid Icarus are just jelly fish and a coincidence. They were released too closely together to have been just copied.

Was introduced to Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus from my cousin. He would bring the games over early Sat morning and we would just play the games while eating cup O Noodles and get some ice cream from the Ice Cream trucks. We would just chill and take our time to enjoy the games. For Kid Icarus I know it takes 50,000 pts to get the 3rd bar but it was just a chore for stage 1-1, so we just get 20,000 so we can get the 2nd bar. And on stage 1-2 get another 30,000 to get the 3rd bar. There were a lot of secrets with the game especially jumping from the top left side and ending up on the right side. Didn't know about the sliding move you did on the stage 1 boss to pass the brick wall. That would save so much time.

I loved/hated this game. It had a lot of real cool ideas and variety for a 1986 game, but the difficulty curve was broken. ALL of the difficulty was at the start and the early areas. It was controller-throwing at the start, became a breeze near the end, and the final level was a cakewalk.

Great info! A good tip I always use is in level 1 fortress after you get to the hot spring room you can go to the right 3 screens and keep killing the skull enemies and fill up all of your hearts over and over and then go to the shop and buy bottles until you have the max of 8. Then you can get 999 hearts and you can leave the fortress with full hearts and full bottles. If your health goes down just go back to the hot spring and fill it back up as you collect the hearts over and over.

I was lucky enough to get a NES maybe a year or so after it initially released, and my first 3 games I got after the pack-in Mario/duckhunt cartridge were Zelda, Metroid, and Kid Icarus which in retrospect is pretty incredible. And I played the hell out of these games, but for whatever reason Kid Icarus was always my favorite of these games. Maybe it was the greek mythology, the character designs, the music, the cryptic RPG aspects or likely a combination of all of these. But still to this day I mourn that we never received a kid icarus title on the SNES, I bet it would have been incredible.

I only every got to the first Fortress as a kid and always got stuck as an eggplant. All your info up to there about skill points, score, sacred treasures... even down to intimidating the shopkeep etc... I literally never knew. The joys of growing up with games in the 80's huh? Would love a HD remake of this game but with the ability to go back and forth (like a Metroidvania).
