What's it like after a teenager is arrested and winds up in "juvie"? A lot of people have visions about what they think juvenile detention looks like, but how do things really go once a teen is arrested and hauled into a detention center and cell? In this look back from our archive, we see Rodrick's intake after being arrested and his emotional meeting with his lawyer the night before his first court hearing. We also witness two juvenile court hearings during his time locked up. Rod was arrested for possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. He maintained it was all a mistake and the weed wasn't his. Despite his protests, police arrested him and hauled him into juvie.
In this look back at the night of his Intake and beyond, we see the Intake Probation Officer go through the steps to process Rod into the center, talk to him about how he wound up behind bars again, and watch as a correctional officer takes rod back to cell units and processes him into his new cell where he will have to wait until his initial juvenile court hearing to learn his fate. We then see Rod have a heart to heart conversation with his defense attorney, and the tense testimony that comes out in court. We also hear from Rod's mom, his probation officer and his counselor, as everyone seems to be in lock-step hoping Rod will be released from detention and be able to carry on with his life.
This video also features a new 2023 update interview with Calamari producers and Rodrick's previous attorney Don Wruck, discussing what it was like representing and filming Rod 15 years ago, and what they know about what happened to Rod following his time in juvie.
