Would this pattern work well with a flannelette type material? Also, if my daughter is a 3T in the waist, but a 4T in length, would I need to grade between the two sizes, or just extend the length on the 3T size? Thanks!

It sure would! The fabric I used in the tutorial is actually flannel. I've use this pattern with other fabrics like denim and interlock as well. If it's just to lengthen, cut across the pants leg. The cut line should be halfway between the crotch and the hem. You will then have 2 pants pieces which you spread to the desired length. Lastly, re-draw out the inseam with a curve ruler or just free hand so that the top and bottom pants pieces are connected smoothly. Hope that helps!

Could this pattern work for baby pants made from men's dress shirt sleeves. The pattern I print has no directions and the pattern creator won't help me. I'm desperate!!

I wondered why you added a waist band instead of just adding and inch or so to the top of the pattern but then I realized you'd have a seam in the front in the waist band. Is that why you did it that way?

Hi there, Great question! I drafted this pattern without the foldable waistband or casing and added an Optional Side Seam line so that it can later be easily hacked, such as to add different types of pockets (slash, inseam) or waist style like the paperbag. In my recent blog post, Kids' Shorts, an extra 2 inches was added to the waist before cutting out the pattern to make a foldable no casing waist (like the one you mentioned above). For the paperbag shorts, I had added 4 5/8" to the pant's waist. So you can probably guess that I have many variations made from this basic pattern. Okay, I'm getting my notes together on this and realized the instructions for assembly are on the video. So when I file this pattern away for future use also (which I think will happen a lot!), I'll either need to hope the web address doesn't change or I'll write out the instructions for future use. The video was great but without it there is no reference to the casing. Also, for a beginner, the pages that print out could be numbered in case someone really can't figure out what it is supposed to look like. Your video is really, really good though. I'll record the web address on my pattern but I also wrote out your text for my file. Oh also, I'm thinking I can use this for leggings with knit fabric as long as I reduce the "ease" and skinny it down. Right? Thanks again!

The sizes posted are what's available. There is a free size M (8-10) shorts that you can lengthen into pants.

Hey there! This is a 1 piece pants pattern. The Optional Side Seam cut line is for when you want a separate front piece and back piece. In that case, you will have to add seam allowance to the new cut lines. Hope that helps!

Hi Holly. My free sewing patterns are PDF downloads, the same as any other PDF sewing pattern that you would pay for. If you're worried about PDF files damaging your computer, I suggest using the “Protected Mode” in Adobe Reader X, which you can download from the Adobe website.
