This and his other films have distribution through production companies based in Hollywood...he just doesn't shoot there....he doesn't self fund his projects...he takes studio funding like every other big director in Hollywood.

I love this scene. It shows that the father and son are flip sides of the same self-destructive coin. They hate each other and are disgusted by each other’s chosen lifestyles, but are both victims of the same addiction manifesting itself in two oppositional forms.

Yeah, he first describes his father, “seduced by illusions of grandeur, a gold packet of king size, with a regal insignia” Perfectly foreshadowing him being the secret informant that they’ve all been after for years, seduced by the crown, seduced and their offer of indemnity/power, and the fact that he pretends to be everyone’s loyal friend, which is a lie) Then he describes himself, plain in black and white (he always tells it like it is), and he’s addicted to the self-destructive cycle of trying to kill himself/his pain with all the drugs. And “that which starts sweet ends bitter, and that which starts bitter ends sweet” mirrors their respective positions (and our first impressions of them) at the start of the film, vs. where they end up by the conclusion, still ironically mirror opposites.

You see that pack of virginia killing sticks on the end of the piano? All you need to know about life is retained within those four walls You will notice that one of your personalities is seduced by the illusions of grandeur A gold packet of king size with a regal insignia, An attractive implication toward glamour and wealth. A subtile suggestion that cigarettes are indeed your royal, and loyal friends And that Pete, is a lie Your other personality is trying to draw your attention to the flipside of the discussion, Written in boring bold black and white is the statement that these neat little soldiers of death, are in fact, trying to kill you, and that Pete, is the truth Oh, beauty is a beguiling call to death and i’m addicted to the sweet pitch of it’s Siren, That that starts sweet ends bitter, and that which starts bitter, ends sweet. That is why, you and i, love the drugs. and that is also why, i cannot give that painting back

happentodie - in life we are fooled into thinking that glamour, wealth is going to make us happy but these things are just temporary fixes. The simple, basics things in life are all we really need to make us truly happy. However, society is fcked up and tries to fool us into thinking we need to have all the frills - loads of cash, fast cars and all the other pointless shit. Jonny loves the drugs to escape this sad reality. Knowing this he still lits up a cigarette. He knows it's not good for him and that glamour, wealth won't make him happy yet he still enjoys it to some extent. He doesn't give a f about the painting but his greedy stepfather and the other dumbfucks do and that's why he doesn't want to give it back.

Its not, as if you saw the movie, you would know that poor bastard Lenny had nothing to do with disappearing of the lucky picture and it wasn't actually the worst thing that will happen to him in future. So the real moral is: what seems sweet at first is a distraction, an illusion of happiness whereas the boring facts are in fact the truth and righteous path. But this lesson is invisible to most, as subtly suggested by awe of Johnny's friend and 69 thumbs up underneath your comment:) No offence

He says the script is ready, he just needs the funding for it. Many of the cast members though have gotten a lot more expensive since then (this was Tom Hardy’s big break for example), and the film didn’t do well, so it’s unlikely we’ll see it, unfortunately.

Whilst you're right, you're sort of forcing Tracephage into a position of opposition as an excuse to show off your interpretation (which is right so far as I can tell) when in fact he was just making a joke rather than seriously trying to analyze the scene. Not sure why you decided to involve him at all if not for a kick to your ego or to create controversy. Still, good job putting it into words, scenes like this, I always feel the message, but can never summarize it so well as that.
