Kieran Culkin (Roman Roy) Funeral Scene on SUCCESSION - So he's definitely winning an Emmy, right?
from the episode -- "Church and State" - season 4, episode 9
"The Roys arrive at Logan's funeral amidst street protests that have broken out following the announcement of Mencken's win. Shiv advises Matsson to publicize his bogus subscriber counts in India while the news cycle is occupied with the election and tells her brothers about her pregnancy. Ewan gives a charged eulogy lending insight into Logan's troubled childhood while condemning his brother's actions. Roman is unable to perform his speech and breaks down crying, prompting Kendall to give one in his place. Shiv brokers a deal between Matsson and Mencken to allow the GoJo deal to go through in exchange for naming an American CEO, which she hopes will be her. Upon learning this, Kendall enlists Roman and Hugo to join him against Shiv at the final board vote on the acquisition. Roman, overwhelmed with the funeral and ashamed at letting his deal with Mencken backfire, walks into a crowd of protesters and gets beaten."

The pre-grieve was such a good Chekovs gun, as soon as I saw Roman acting so nonchalant after his fathers death I knew he was going to have the biggest breakdown. You can’t bottle this stuff up!

The saddest part about this is it’s implied Roman was the most physically abused out of the siblings. And despite all that, he was the one who stood by Logan the most and always sought his approval.
@kensearle4451

Often the way with people being abused; they get kicked so much, they think that standing by their abuser will somehow win their approval, rather than cementing their place as the dog to be kicked.
@dezchocofondue
@dezchocofondue 7 ай бұрын
This makes it even sadder, like; he fought so hard for approval but hid it most of the time. And the fact that despite him not liking his father for what he’s done, he still clings onto that approval he wanted from him

The fact Caroline as Roman's *own* mother didn't even comfort her son and just sitting there and watching. Even Connor who is his half brother comforted him.
@vmusket5464
@vmusket5464 4 ай бұрын
She's clearly crying at 1:44 because she feels for her son. It's true that she's a cold distant mother for all of them but Logan took them away from Caroline early on so a connection like that never developed properly. You are right, though; ideally she should have gone up. But how many times did she really get to hold Roman in his life?

This scene is exactly how I was on the first day of my dad’s funeral. I didn’t show any emotion when I was told he passed and was blank the whole time until I walked in and saw him laying in the coffin.. it’s like you get punched in the face. I’m so glad he got the Emmy! He deserved it.

I’m so sorry for your loss. We just low key spread my dad’s ashes but at the end when he goes out to the riots just to feel ~something~ … of man, did I feel that. It was fresh off the loss of my dad and so so hard to watch.

Kieran most DEFINITELY deserves an Emmy for this in the future. If he doesn’t get it this year or next, im genuinely appalled because he nails the voice break, the holding back tears, the shaking, the guilt, the shame, the shaking, and confusion. I don’t think Ive ever see a scene where someone breaks down in a silent way and this is an accurate representation in my opinion. The confusion and shame is absolutely astounding in this scene. He knows what to say, he’s just stressed in the moment. The shame he probably feels from people just looking at him, resulting in him calling himself “stupid” cause people are judging. And on top of that, the guilt of not gaining approval and comfort that hits hard for him, that also evolves into not knowing how to reflect on things as seen here. I am barely into the 1st season but this is just my interpretation. This is an absolutely great performance. Kieran Culkin, the man that you are. Edit: Macfadyen, Culkin AND Snook have won the golden globe awards of 2024!! Aswell as the show itself, 2024 IS THEIR YEAR LET’S GO!!

I know a lot of people feel Roman is an enigmatic character but I always thought he was perfectly displayed through his behavior. He masterfully showed what an abused child grows into.The stunted childlike featured to the inappropriate outbursts before perceived confrontation. The over fixation with appearance eluding to a visible discomfort in his own skin. His inability to accept positive intimacy and constantly being on guard and testing boundaries. Yet this scene still caught me off guard. It’s a very powerful scene of someone suffering with major disfunction. I’m very happy Kieran crafted a character so well and is being recognized for his dedication and talent. I’m excited to see more of his work in the future.

We can all play rough when they tell us, that a member of our family dies. But when you see that coffin... And you know that person is there and you will never see them again, you just want them to come out of that coffin and everything will be normal again. I understand Roman when he saw the coffin, because it was me when I saw my grandma's coffin, I didn't even see her in it, I only saw the coffin and I couldn't bear the tears.

The reaction i had to this scene was similar to the one i had when Connor reacts to Logan's death. "He didn't even liked me", it was at first darkly funny, but my grin turn into a depressive frown. That's the effect this show has in a nutshell. Making you at first snicker over this character's misery to then have a flick of raw empathy, even when you know that those people are awful.

This performance is definitely worthy of an Emmy and he had had me bawling. What I did not get is why the writers wrote "Is he in there, can we get him out?", he's not 3, he's a full grown man, he knows that dead bodies go in caskets and you don't get them out, what were they thinking?

They are cynical people and definetely are not his friends. It's a show about businesmen and politicians, and this funeral is more of a public event. They don't care about feelings, they just see that the supposed successor can't control himself as his position requires. He displays normal human emotions, but for them it means he is weak and unable to act though under pressure.
