Rough, but yeah. It's like they're dead set on having something to prove. In every single film, the girl character has to PROVE that she's tough and independent. The strong-and-pretty-and-smart-and-independent-and-absolutely-flawless cliché is reeeally wearing on me. That's why I like Ghibli characters - they have flaws. Sometimes major flaws. But they all come through and become better people for it. I relate more to an imperfect character.

+HarpoTheVillain IKR! It almost seems that there's no lessons to teach through the Disney films. Ghibli's characters, as you said, learn lessons that better them as a person. Disney films almost have a bad moral in 'em - In order to be the best, you have to start off perfect. Ghibli's films teach us that anyone has the potential for change, you just have to seek it out. It's a great lesson to take, especially for the young. :) In all honesty, that's why I like Japan and it's people and culture so much. They are inspirational, from their education, etiquette and respect, to the way they work and dedicate something not for themselves, but for others to enjoy and take something from. Western media is too... fake. They value green paper over their own species, which is sickening to say the least. GANBATTE, NIHON!

The Japanese understood the French and Italian culture of the late 80's much better than the Italian and French themselves lol.
@QronoZ7134 жыл бұрын
This is supposed to be in Stockholm?
@McLarenMercedes4 жыл бұрын
@@QronoZ713 It IS. Hayao Miyazaki originally pitched an idea to Astrid Lindgren to make an animated movie about Pippi Longstocking and traveled to Sweden. For some reason Lindgren didn't give her blessing for this project and at first it appeared as if Miyazaki's project would be abandoned. He then realized that what he had seen in Sweden would serve as a good setting for the planned animated adaptation of "Kiki's Delivery Service". The production team therefore went to Stockholm and Visby and took pictures of the classic architecture and typical old town streets and used that as a basis for the fictional town in the film. Leotique's whole comment unfortunately tells about a complete lack of understanding of foreign architecture styles since the fictional city in "Kiki's Delivery Service" looks *nothing* like French cities and *definitely* not like the Italian cities. I mean had he/she said German or even Austrian culture I could have accepted that but French and Italian?? Dutch I could have accepted somewhat. Clearly this person either has travelled nowhere, never been in Europe or simply has no eye for the aesthetic and certainly not typical architect styles. On top of that all the signs on the shops sound typically "Germanic" which is why I can't understand how anybody would believe they're Italian or French. Stockholm and Visby in Sweden were the templates Miyazaki's animation team used. OP clearly knows nothing but jumps to hasty conclusions. I believed fans of these amazing animated films would at least care to do a little background research about them in how they came to be and what they were based on rather the crudely assuming something. As for "the culture of the late 80's" it's equally nonsensical. Miyazaki typically doesn't set his films in the present and even if he does he has an anachronistic style (older items and styles meshed into the modern setting) in which there can be people wearing more 50's looking clothing, driving typical "classic cars" such as the Volkswagen Beetle (which certainly were rare in the late 80's) and old trucks (look so much charming than modern ones). Tv crews look more like early 70's reporters. It's not even specified exactly when "Kiki's Delivery Service" takes place but knowing him it's clear it's fictional fantasy setting and an "idyllic world". Notice the airship. Those appear in most of Miyazaki's films. There hasn't been any airships in Europe since the 1930's (following the 1937 Hindenburg disaster it's not hard to see why). It's Miyazaki's own fantasy world where different styles mix and which would appear anachronistic to those who don't understand his world building. Telling a story through an unique visual is his hallmark and this is why he doesn't seem to repeat himself and do the same story set in the same setting again and again and again like so many film makers. In "Kiki's Delivery Service" he basically has managed to create a big city with a small city style and feeling. The only thing I can think of is that the OP actually believes Hayao Miyazaki just went to some European city and copied it straight off which would explain the naively idyllic vision of cities looking like that in the late 80's which is kind of cute but far from reality. Long story short: Stockholm and Visby were the cities they used as a template - particularly the older parts with classic architecture for a more idyllic setting.

@@McLarenMercedes well I'm from Switzerland and lived in Germany and France, also visited Italy many times since it's my neighbor country, never been to Stockholm and I haven't watch Kiki yet. But I've traveled through most of Middle and Western Europe, North Africa, South, and Southeast Asia, to know that Ghibli movies get their inspirations from middle European and East-Asian cities. Also, my statement wasn't only about this movie, but about Ghibli in general. The city structure and typography of this trailer might by very germanic (in german we call this Gotisch) but the scenes with the car and smaller streets surely resemble Italy or France in the '80s. Your comment tells about a complete lack of understanding opinions, seems like you've got lots of time during quarantine ;)

Though I know I am going to sound very ballsy here. So anyone out there who loves this film just as much as I do, please be honest with me when I say, should they make a sequel to this, or a TV series, or should they just leave it alone.
@akosuaqueenbonsulol93899 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Carpenter I love this film so much too and right after watching it I really wanted something more like a sequel or a Tv series. but to be truly honest now I feel like it should be left alone and let it be a masterpiece in itself adding something else to it would kind of ruin the magic of it if you get me. :)

AkosuaqueenBonsu lol Fair enough. Though if a sequel did happen, what would you want to see happen?

One of my favorite movies of all time. I don't mean just anime, either!

I got drunk and watched this show. I feel so lame but I feel genuinely happy about watching the show. Tomorrow I'm gonna wake up and continue the monobasic university life, but watching the movie I felt genuinely happy. I think that this is the magic of ghibli films, it's just got a very wholesome vibe to it. I would also recommend the wind rises by the same studio.

Studio ghibli for the win. Every movie is just so inspiring
This was one of the films that got me started on anime. Even though it came out in 1989 it still holds up to this day as one of my favorites.

The first time I watched this movie, I was 14. Idk how I stumbled on it as it's not of my culture and I have never watched a Japanese movie before and didn't know what to expect, but I am glad I did. This was one of the most soothing and mesmerizing movie I have ever watched and I still remember it 5 years later

yeah me too i kinda want to see a part 2 where everything is fine. The sadness is because i think we want to see what happens next, and they don't provide us with that i feel kinda the same way.

The same thing goes for my neighbor totoro it just hit me with nostalgia with the quiet nature around the house and it hits me so hard and i kinda want to experience it again. Just imagine you with you grandparents or with your parents on a quiet field in the summer.

This song is called "Yasashisa ni tsutsumareta nara" by Yumi Arai, in case anyone was curious. It's trul an excellent song on its own, but it fits well into the ending of the movie too.

Just watched it and can’t believe it was made in 89th. Amazing animated film!
Such a pleasant movie. One of the few that I've personally watched that had no where in particular to go, and just relished in the world and lives presented to us in such an effective way. Only saw it for the first time as an adult and I just wish I could have been exposed to it in my childhood.

Man I can't believe I came across this movie right now. I was checking out which family movie to watch with my kids and this movie came up top family movies to watch and I stopped and stared looking at this girl in the broom and it took a while, but then I instantly remembering this move. I haven't watched this in years. Man, we were so innocent back then when we were kids.

The movement of the broomstick is phenomenal. You really feel Kiki's weight on the broom and she struggles to avoid the cars.
