The best thing about Chris Broderick, in my opinion, was that he pretty much nailed every solo note for note live. But now Kiko has a level of feel not heard since Marty and I think that's the key to why he's able to put his stamp on Marty's solos.

3:15 when I first learned that part of the solo I did it the way Kiko played it without ever hearing how Kiko played it because it was so much easier, it just came naturally to me. I didn't even attempt to do the original version

I agree with you! I believe that one of the main aspects of changing guitarrrists in a band, like Megadeth has done so many times, you inherently will bring some changes to your song, if not why bother chosing a greatçly renowned guitarrist? If it should be note for note and bring nothing new to the table, just pick a hard on fan that can play the songs note for note by heart and let the guy play, but that doesn't bring uniqueness (nor atracts people to a concert).

Kirk Hammet did the same thing with the solos on Kill em All. I watched a video with Kirk explaining that they were just his interpretation of Dave Mustaine’s solos. He would play the first few bars of the way Dave played it then would trail off on his own thing for the rest of the solo.

Dangerous... I have that debate all the time, both with myself and with students. Of course what we want is to be recognisable and have our own style and sound. But learning the solos note for note is what will make us learn and evolve. I say, learn the solos first and then change them. Be able to play both versions. Best way to go about itnin my opinion

Kiko is a legend and he is in my top 5 players since his Angra years! He plays his own and his runs have a lot of that bossanova flavour...Marty on the other hand is a GOD amongst us. NOTHING is random in his playing, every little note in there offers some harmonic variety, a major 3rd inside a diminished arpeggio, a minor 3rd inside a major arpeggio, a 7th, a 9th, and then a 6th and flat 5...the guy NEVER stays in one harmonic pattern more than 10 notes is a row, sometimes he goes from key to key inside a phrase only to land back at the right time....I have studied him for years and years and he CANNOT BE EMULATED. you might play the same notes, BUT you will NEVER compose as Marty does. Every time I hear him play I cry....

There is a difference recording a solo and playing it live night after night. You can get more complex and tricky with some patterns on a recording you don’t have to pull all over and over snd over AFTER playing many others solos the same night. A lot of this has to do with staying true to the “feel” of the solo while not having to remember every single intricacy on the album and making it a bit easy on yourself so you can play the remaining songs and solos.

Yep, this happen with my solos (in my band), i have the "main" idea of the solo in my head (like singing it) but sometimes i play the hook or memorable part of them but changing other parts depending on the day, the public energy, my mood, monitoring etc.

True; also live with the generally mushy, loud audio, drunken, hyped-up audience absolute perfection and utmost technical difficulty isn’t important. You gotta hit the feeling, add some cool sounding stuff maybe to change it up in order to break the expectation (works wonders!) and “look impressive” (doesn’t have to be finger-breakingly technical). If there are some very special, recognizable phrases, you got to be pretty close, though; gonna p*ss people off otherwise.

I used to try and match the solo’s of coversongs as close as I possibly could, but there would always be phrases I just couldn’t nail. I gave them my own swing and people (even guitarists) always complimented me on how accurate I was. 😂 they just didn’t notice the differences 😊

Great video mike and I think one you can totally expand on in future videos using different parts of known solos. Up until I became older and wiser I used to think you had to learn solos note for note. I would look at over transcribed Satriani runs with all their crammed timings and note flurries and think I had to duplicate it. When what I shoulda realized was that some licks only serve a purpose and are often played the same live. That super long legato run was only meant to bridge the gap between point A and a more melodic phrase or specific bend at point B. All I needed to do was realize that and by keeping in the spirit of what was played and why it was played I coulda just created a legato run of my own. I bet you could do a whole series of “make a solo” your own sorta thing especially with Kirk Hammett solos. He always had tons of pentatonic runs in his solos that are ripe for “making your own”. Much like a singer can cover a song and add their own flair we can do the same

Sure Marty would not have replicated it exactly! You’ll never find a live version of tornado as it is on the record. I’ve been learning poison was the cure and seen a couple of different versions and Altho I want to play it as close as possible there are other ways to get the same result that are more “my style” even if it means slight differences

The economy picking part sounds a lot different with kiko's approach, not that it sounds bad but i prefer the original on that specific section. Also i think this solo is a one of a time kind of thing, nailing live is pretty hard and all the covers i've seen on youtube are great but i'm sure those were not "first attempts". Kiko has to play it in a way that does it justice but also keeps him relaxed and comfortable so that the whole thing doesn't look and sound robotic to the audience (this is also one of the big differences between him and Broderick). Sure he could easily play the original note for note if he wanted to but in a live show i think he prefers a more authentic and personal version.

I played many times the Tornado solo in my original band (it was one of the few covers), and I always took some liberties: in the sweep arpeggio, for example, I used tapping for the last note to avoid the slide. I know it sounds slightly different (you dont hear the slide) but it works....

Guitar playing aside Kiko is such a wholesome guy for the level of guitar shredding skill he's at. He probably could play the notes Marty does but I honestly prefer when a guitarist does a little injection of their own because they are at that point definitely bringing something unique to the table even when playing songs not written by themselves, that's a good thing to try and do honestly. This can also probably help you improve composing your own stuff as well, by trying to change things up in an existing solo and still making it work.

I don't know why you would put yourself under pressure to nail a whole set full of solos note for note! I mean, for 99% of the audience, a fast bit is a fast bit. When I played in cover bands I always just played something that fit the song and felt comfortable for me, and I never had any complaints. Plenty of times people told me I had "nailed" something I hadn't even tried to play "correctly" 😂 So yeah, be more Kiko!

I think it is worth mentioning that Kiko stays true to the identifiable aspects of the solo while taking liberty on the details that no one would notice. It's helpful to distinguish between a minor interpretation and a major one here. Kiko amends small aspects of the solo that one wouldn't notice. If Dave wanted to have someone play it note for note, he would reach out to Marty. Kiko is an entirely different guitar player, and the band is constantly evolving, so it just fits with the band's growth. It would be interesting to hear how other guitarists of Megadeth played the solo

Something that most ppl who learn of Kiko from Megadeth don't get about Kiko is that he has a very strong root in Jazz, Latin and Fusion. So it's expected that he'll play a different interpretation/iteration at different live shows. He's always done that since his Angra days. Some times he would replicate what's on the album note for note, sometimes he would freestyle certain segment. Same thing with interpretive players like Eric Johnson or Greg Howe. Very rarely do you see these type of players play the exact same thing. Every show is a new interpretation of the piece to them.

The economy picking part I called it the Randy section of the solo. Never thought of Kirk but I can hear it since you mention it but I’d be more likely to think that Marty got that from RR . Friedman is one of hardest players to emulate part of his mojo is that chicken Hawk pick hand technique, he has fantastic vibrato and phrasing. I loved the exotic Marty solo trading off with Dave’s aggressive almost Angus lead playing it just worked. Kiko is fantastic and Dave’s probably been through enough guitarist to understand that even if they were capable of playing older solos note for note they wouldn’t be happy for very long doing it. Marty took liberties with his solos playing live with Megadeth as well especially when Nick was super hyped and bumped the bpms up a smidge lol . I love learning Marty licks as well but I nearly always find a different way to play some of his arpeggios that just makes them easier for me to reach and halfway pull off . I love that economy RR section it’s like ok ok ok then he rips that and it’s like that first drop on the roller coaster and that’s when he takes you on a thrill ride . The flight of the bumblebees part would be those air time hills at the end of the coaster I guess.

George Lynch(being my main influence) hardly ever plays his own solos note for note. This has been my approach for years, add the signature parts of a solo and build your style around that. I have learned solos note for note but always find myself adding my "mojo" at some point. That is what playing music is about, adding your flair to keep it fresh.

For me, if I’m going to see Megadeth with Kiko I WANT him to change it to his style. That’s the advantage of Kiko being there. He could play everything exactly like Marty and I’d still leave feeling like I just saw not-Marty copying Marty. When I was young I was always told Marty doesn’t use his pinky that much. I got pretty quick with three until I realised that if you use your pinky, playing solos is much easier 😄 but then again i learned fifths using index and pinky so there you go.

I played in some cover bands in the past and even though I tried to match the original, I always kept thinking that most players including the composers tweak solos and riffs all the time live and that it gives a great live feel. It's also interresting to ear slight differences from one performance to another. So back to subject, when I learn a solo or whatever part, it's not rare that I experiment and make somehow the song a little bit my own :-P. Maybe I'm wrong but I like it while still loving the original.

One of the greates examples for me is While My Guitar Gently Weeps. While the Beatles original was really great, the Jeff Healy version was incredible (as is my favorite). He took the song, and made it it's own whitout sacrificing the original at all. So why tweaking a little bit of a solo would be considered playing it wrong, I don't think it should. However, learning a song perfectly like the original is still challenging, satisfying and can also help learn and master more our instrument.

Because, even Marty doesn't play like Marty plays. For me, the best example is from a part of the solo that wasn't covered in this video. On the famous economy-picked arpeggios, the arpgeggio increasingly requires a bigger stretch. We go from: Fret 14/15 and 10 on the E-string and 12 on B. To: Fret 15/17 and 10 on the E-string and 12 on B. To: Fret 16/17 and 10 on the E-string and 12 on B. But Kiko, as well as Marty at least on recent videos, play that third figure like this live: Fret 16/17 and 12 on the E-string and 12 on B. Which differs and is easier compared to the studio version.

man I had this kind of though years ago and I was one step further: when my old bands decided to play a cover I always came with this comparison: "when Metallica or Ramones plays a cover song, you simply know that are THEM playing the song, not trying to play like the original bands", sometimes I even use "knocking on heavens door" as an example of a cover being "more famous" than the original... at that time, it was always a lost battle for me and I had to try to nail the solos... but since I'm not so good as you guys, I end up playing the "main idea" of the solos, but restricted by my "incompetence/limitation"... 😀

That's interesting about the 1/8th note triplets thing. That's what I've always done, because that's what I was hearing. I guess I didn't realize that I was leaving out a note. And I probably would have struggled with the "right" way (Marty's way) technically. I think I play the Bark At The Moon outro solo (similar pattern as TOS) the same way.

I'd also like to comment and say "hats off" and "thank you" for saying we can have 'breathing room' when trying to play others songs. It's nice to hear from a very accomplished guitar player. I've been beating myself up similarly for not getting my playing to have that sloppy/random sound of Kurt Cobain. I've been playing Nirvana for years and it's like the own band doesn't play the songs the same way twice. This was encouraging.

I always say this, if a technique works better for you to play the same note someone else plays, then use that. So if you’re learning a solo with an alternate picking run and legato works better, then use legato. It makes learning solos easier to just use your favorite technique instead of trying to use techniques that the guitarist(s) use on the recording!

If the guitar player is more comfortable with a different interpretation of the solo, and they are not in some sort of clone-competition, but are just there for the music, the end result will sound better, because the player is more comfortable playing in such and such way. So yeah, absolutely the way to go, but, of course, as long as the main structure and tonal points of the solo remain intact. Cool topic for the video :)

Mike over the years I have never bothered learning how to play "note for note" anything. Rhythm or lead. I've always been content to get the main parts down but I've always wanted to make a song my own. Back in the 80s I read an interesting article where Lars talked about this. He had said that when playing someone else's song or your own live you should always be comfortable changing it up. If a listener wants to hear Randy Rhodes they can anytime they want to, he will always be a better version of him than I can so to show respect for my heroes I've always played my version of their song.

I always loved the way Al Pitrelli did the solos. I'm someone who will mostly play a solo how it fits my style. Stay true to melodies and things but if I find a way to play something that feels better to me, I'll do it that way. Hell, I throw a tapping section in the Tornado solo just because I've never seen anyone else do it that way. Who's saying you're "not allowed" to put a little bit of yourself in whatever it is you're playing... that's just silly!

This is a cool idea! Are those clips from his audition tape? He released a video explaining them advising not to learn Megadeth songs from them becuase they are definitely wrong. He didn't have time to learn them all and just played as best as he could from memory and by ear which is impressive in its own right, but he didn't do it on purpose. I have the same approach, in grand scheme of things this is ok, because it sounds like it's there, plus those are so minor details, especially if you are at the concert. Melodic stuff or beat and the sound, are more important for authenticism of the song For ex, once I saw AC/DC, not cover, but TRIBUTE acclaimed band, and drummer had china cymbal and the guitar sound I'm pretty sure it had two metalzones in it. I wanted to murder them:P To nail every note is absurd..I mean, if you have all the time in the world, go for it, but.. I play bass and guitar (different bands, not at the same time lol). I’ve been told I’m a pretty good bassist, I have been doing it a lot longer than guitar so yeah, and the way I’ve always approached bass fills in songs is that if it’s integral to the song or follows what another instrument is doing, then I learn it note for note. If it’s just a fill, I’ll just do something of my own in key at that point in the song. As for guitar solos, I’m still learning, but I’ll try to either hit iconic notes or passages as they happen and “fill” around the rest, or if it has no real standout parts, do the same as I do with bass fills and just play anything I want in the right key. I’m just doing covers though. If it were a tribute band, as my wife was in a Rainbow one a couple years ago, I would learn everything to the original recording as that’s what the audience is expecting to hear

There were years of seeking note for note tabs for solos, so it makes sense there is pressure, particularly for amateurs looking to become pros to prove their skills by playing as close to the original as possible...once past that point and to have "made it" there would be more latitude to add your own attitude.

In this particular case, l think Kiko should play it exactly the way Marty used to play the solo. Because is such a unique and tasty solo, that any change takes something from it...

Isn't one of those videos the one that Kiko recorded as samples before joining Megadeth? I believe he said that he had only a few days to learn the solos so that would explain the improvisations that he made.
