We have a 13 week old Samoyed pup who is easily excitable and gets super loud and agitated when she's insecure. Today I took her to a cafe for the first time and got her to settle after 5 minutes of alternating between reinforcing her for being calm for a split second and apologizing to the staff :D I'm so proud of our work thanks to your videos :) I think that's a huge success given her age and breed

I can't say enough how much I love your videos. I also love that you don't attack other trainers and their methods. I wished that the dog training community was more like that. I often notice so much drama in the dog training community. Balance trainers scrutinizing those who use positive reinforcement/food based rewards and so on. There is purely so much myth around the negative use of force free training. The use of positive reinforcement isn't the cause of dog attacks. Most dog attacks are caused by improperly socialized dogs that are solely guard dogs. It isn't bribery, as a food reward isn't any different than any other reinforcer(tactile, play and so on.) Anything can be a reinforcer as long as the learner finds it reinforcer. Finally, the biggest pet peeve I have with common myths of positive reinforcement is that only food rewards work and you can't get animals to perform behaviors without them. Chirag Patel talked about how he trained a dog using crushed plastic bottles, a parrot using music and so on.

For me, I think its the positive trainers who do the most online bullying... but then I am biased cause I probably get exposed to their bullying the most and what not on social media.

This will be great help. My Aussie, although the breed is typically shy, she LOVES meeting every person and dog who passes by. Strangers do not help when they just reinforce her behavior. With your videos she is slowly but surely getting better!

The first 2 minutes alone cover some crucial foundation behaviors, very well explained. A good reminder for me to spend time on the "settle" side, with my super drivey GSD pup (11 months). Play and engagement are well-rehearsed in many different places, but he needs to practice just "being" as well (not aroused / not in drive).

I have always unconsciously known that making the actual behaviour fun is the key to success. Switching sides in heeling, adding spins and turns, hand touches, and lots of movement really helps. A stale, single reward for a stale, single sit isn't fun at all.

Thankyou for this. My 11 month old husky LOVES every other dog and person he meets. He LOVES trying to chase cats and he HATES skateboards and crows, so yeah, a walk anywhere is trigger after trigger most of the time! It's a slow process but with tips like these he's definately improving 😊

Just saw the preview for this video on insta and came RIGHT OVER to see the whole thing, cause this is the next step with my 3yo collie. I can see she's sooo close to being able to be reliably focused on me in a distracting environment, but couldn't imagine how to get her from here to there. Thank you! I have a ton of ideas now :)

Excellent advise. Thanks so much for sharing. My #1 take away, teach your dog to relax (and maybe with focus game) in a distracting environment, ie, just chill before training in that environment with lower criteria and build on it.

Wow. So many awesome ideas here. Getting your dog to relax in an environment before asking them to engage in play is kind of amazing. It seems so obvious now that you mention it. Practicing self control is the foundation. I think I'm going to restart KO Relaxation Protocol and more to more environments. Thanks for the video!

always good to brush up. When I take WIsh to a new ER and she settles perfectly with all the stressful stuff going around and then at a new park shes stressy it reminds me that I have worked more on the settle first at the ER...

You could use a long line and a fence, so the dog is at the fence saying hi to another then you call your dog away from the fence as the first step
@kikopup

@@kikopup Thank you! Haven't tried using the line near a fence, will give it a try! In the UK most parks have dogs off leash all the time, and my neighbourhood has TONS of sighthounds so it's like the wild west out here. But lots of opportunity to train my lurcher to come away from distractions :)

I have 2 Airedale terriers - they are extremely dog reactive. In every other situation they are responsive and calm. Dogs trump everything and nothing else matters, they can’t be off leash because they chase and intimidate. Our lives are becoming very limited as they can’t go anywhere where we may encounter a dog. We have great calm settle at home but can’t get it out. Can you recommend a video I can watch to help with this? Trainers I have engaged just say Airedales are impossible or are not even interested when I say I have Airedales.

I suggest to take them out one at a time while the other is at home, or if they stress when one is left at home if there are two of you walk and train at the same time but split up. The two together probably makes it much harder. I suggest getting a trainer who has calm decoy dogs that can just lay and ignore your dogs as you work with them one at a time.

@@kikopup thank you for taking the time to reply. I’ve tried 6 trainers and none will allow training with other dogs. It’s always been solo as they want total obedience first. I feel they are training for collies not terriers, it’s a challenge! But I think having them separate is probably part of the answer ( we had 3 at one point and that was crazy). They are in our art gallery and perfectly calm and social with people.

Hi I have 2 golden retriever pups, we had a dog trainer but she just kept cancelling the training. For a 4 week session we almost spread that out over 3 months, the things I learned I trained them and they know the basic stuff. But the pups are almost 6 months now and pulling my arm out when they go on a walk. We supposed to have a session about walking last sunday but she cancelled again. Can you give some advice for me what to do, I cant walk the pups my husband needs to do that now. I so want to go out with them on walkies.

Do you have any videos of how to help dogs who are afraid of strangers? I would love for my dog to be confident and friendly when people ask to pet her on walks, but instead she shies away behind me. Off leash she is more friendly
