The tip about not going to explore immediately is a game changer. I've been doing it for the last two days since watching the video. Basically I get out of the house and we spend at least 30 seconds acclimating every 5 meters or so. His nose is going non-stop the whole time but when he finally acclimates he's able to shake off and relax. I have to walk less and he gets just as much if not more mentally, because he has to sit and watch the world go by. Then he's able to run off the stress of just sitting there in this enclosed space we have. I have to walk less and he seems to be more relaxed throughout.
@1316Salva3 жыл бұрын
A few days later, I am now not really just sitting in one spot because that was too frustrating for my dog. Instead I let him walk around but limit it to an area where we can then play. He used to never play outside with me. Now after he gets familiar with that environment he ends up paying attention to me and interacting
@recycledMilk3 жыл бұрын
this approach has been a gamechanger for us. weve had our new pup for 6 days now, and he is still scared of everything. but when we are out on a walk and he sees some new things. he sits down and we reward him for calmly observing. we also wait by his side until he is ready to move on. simply hearing children play two streets down would have scared the heck out of him just 3 days ago. now he can sit on the other side of the road and observe kids walking by without barking or growling! we still have a long way to go but he has been doing so good!

This was great! Thanks for putting this out there! I'm so curious about the comment you made regarding herding breeds and how they might not do well if you are in an environment with no people and then a sudden person comes out. I thought this was particular to my dog! For example, if we go somewhere in the car and get out and there are people there already, he tends to be fine with people. But if we go somewhere, get out of the car and don't see anyone right away, he will end up barking at every new person he sees after that!

Also you can put on the leash for indoor training, you could work on the position at your side in the living room, walking forward turning with you, and also the leash pressure game inside all on leash so that the leash also means being reinforced for connecting with you

Great video! I was wondering how well counter-conditioning and desensitizing a dog in a stroller to people and dogs outdoors, carries over to the dog walking on leash (for small fearful/reactive dogs). Does it help to start training relaxation and cc/ds in the stroller first before doing the same exercises on leash? Is it harder to read the dog/gage whether the dog will go over threshold? Thanks very much!!!
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question. I would say basically if you plan to begin with the stroller further away from the things than you would have the dog on the ground at first, then you can find a distance the dog is relaxed in the stroller and gradually decrease distance depending on how comfortable the dog is. With my little chihuahua epic I didnt use the stroller for socialization because she was confident from day one being right next to dogs and people we pass. When I was socializing my BC puppy, it was awesome because when something super creepy suddenly appeared I could quickly turn the stroller in another direction so there was a red wall blocking the view of that thing 100%. The stroller I got you could see through the top and the back. I found it easier to read the dog because the dog was closer to me, i could even turn the stroller toward me or walk infront of it it check the dog out if I wanted. Obviously putting a dog in a stroller that is terrified of crowds or being near dogs and then going into a crowd could be flooding. What I did with the socialization trips was have the dog in the stroller then with it open, and also taking him out to settle on the grass near the stroller or sniff around and walk around before going back in to walk where the other dogs passed. The great thing about the passing dogs was they didnt pull toward him and stare and the kids we could go right past without them screaming and grabbing. Its so sad how much the attention of the public can make the environment punishing for the dog if that makes sense.

When my kelpie pup (14 months) sees something approaching from a distance, he crouches down or lies down. Usually he just stands up and wants to play and say hi when whatever it is gets to us. Sometimes, though, especially if he is not on leash, he will stalk towards it and I can't get him to recall. How do I get him to stop doing this? Like you said, as a herding breed, he gets more startled by someone suddenly appearing out of nowhere than he does in a parking lot with many cars and people. His crouching behavior is way more likely in an empty park or trail when someone comes around a corner at a distance ahead of us.

Great tips in this video thank you from the UK! Would love to work up to this with my 1YO terrier girl but we struggle with calmness at home as soon after being rewarded for being calm in her bed she will growl as if to ask for more, but since she's no longer calm I don't reward, and she's already doing the alternative behaviour of lying in her bed so then we're stuck 😂 do you find this problem also?
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
I suggest doing "one off" treats, where she just gets one. have treats on the counter, give her one for calm behavior where shes not thinking about the food, then show her your empty hands and say "all done" and then move to another room away from her, or let her out to the toilet so shes not thinking about the food as much. After a few weeks of getting just 1 treat, the anticipation of the "next" and frustration of it not coming will become less. Kind of like I did in this video when the dog was paying too much attention and I said all done and go sniff, then reinforced any time the dog was not thinking about the food.
@MartinParmiter3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your reply, we will try that! Hope it's ok to reply back 😊 I assume that her frustration growling and barking at not getting more treats in the short term will get worse before it gets better? I'm also working on Crate training and Karen Overall's Relaxation Protocol regularly too, but those include regular treats throughout (the pup also sometimes growls during these sessions too), so would you recommend stopping these for now? Tia

great video thank you. our 7 month old cavapoo won't listen to me as soon as we are out of the back door. should I let him sniff for a while first? he will pull etc. or should I try the mat just outside when we've mastered it inside? he is either super sniffy when out, pulling, or staring at me-but high alert not relaxed
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
Id totally try the settle game, but until youve trained it you could just walk back and forth down the street or weave around the same area, this will for most dogs make them less excited because they are revisiting the same areas, rather than pulling toward new things in a strait line. Playing games where you mark and reinforce the dog for staying at your side inside and then bringing the training outside will also help

Hi! Do you have any advice for introducing a pup to trains? I live in Sweden and would love to be able to take my future dog to different towns, but I feel like trains would be really loud and scary and I don't want to overwhelm the pup and give them a bad experience!
@WaggingTailsDogTraining3 жыл бұрын
So my dog is pretty scared of trains and what we are doing, is just giving her positive experiences with loud noises- but trains specifically. So playing fetch with her near the train, doing training, getting high-quality treats, having her play with dogs, and other things she likes. Hope this helps! :)
@puudathemeow55933 жыл бұрын
You can probably also find yt videos or record your own with audio from trains, cars, rifles, fireworks or whatever your dog is scared of and countercondition it at home with food and/or play, then you can go over to the real deal but from a distance that you decrease over time. I would say that it's probably better if the dog already likes being in a normal car and knows basic commands like sit and lie down in different environments so it's easier for you. Getting the dog used to climbing stairs in general would also be good so it doesn't get stressed out by that sort of situation when it's older and maybe can't be easily lifted upp any more.

Our sweet dog (a Morky) is a rescue that we have had for close to 8 yrs now. We are unable to teach him to do ‘anything’. He doesn’t like to fetch, learn any tricks, etc. He had to have all his teeth removed from poor maintenance from original owners, so trying to give treats he’s just not interested. He does like to take walks, but that’s about all. How do we get him interested in doing/learning anything?? It makes me sad that he’s so disinterested in life. ☹️
@WaggingTailsDogTraining3 жыл бұрын
So since he like walks, you could use his environment as a reward. So before letting him out or putting a leash on him, make him sit, or do. trick. If that doesn't work, try praise! A lot of people over-look praise because they think it won't work, but for many dogs, it is actually a great motivator! Good luck! :-)

Practice in your house, your yard, your house with the door open, a few feet outside the front door, if the dog cant settle, go back inside and close the door, you can also have the dog in the car in a crate at your house and work on that first.
