Thx for the update. I've been getting my fix at Reykjavik Grapevine watching their coverage of the Icelandic volcano recently. People can get right up close to that one and there is some stellar drone coverage. Note- I know Kilauea isn't safely climbable, but when the east rift zone was going on a couple years ago, there was a tremendous opportunity for folks to see it and get some stellar drone footage too.
@evilsharkey89543 жыл бұрын
Some people did. A lot of the footage was from helicopters, too (longer range and flight time). People were evacuated from the active area, which was residential, so nobody would get killed or trapped, requiring dangerous rescue operations, so drones had to travel pretty far. It was really gassy, too. The one in Iceland is much less stinky, so people stay just out of range of the lava and not be in much danger.

Kilauea is hazardous because of the toxic gases and the area surrounding the main vent being unstable from the 2018 eruption. There are huge cracks around the visitors center that are a disaster waiting to happen. The one in Iceland is just oozing and fountaining lava, not outgassing as much, and the surrounding area isn’t half collapsed from the magma chamber emptying out.
@vbscript23 жыл бұрын

Not the same kind of volcano as Krakatoa.
@evilsharkey89543 жыл бұрын
Kilauea is a hot spot shield volcano, not a subduction zone stratovolcano like Krakatau. The 1883 eruption was unusually explosive even for that type of volcano. Anak Krakatau’s current eruptions are small and frequent, which is what you want with a volcano like that. If it rests for a few centuries before waking up again, it will likely be very bad.
@user-mp3eq6ir5b3 жыл бұрын
Krakatoa Exploded because Seawater entered the Core. Kilauea is very different type of lava. Even the underwater lava does not explode. Krakatoa is still Dangerous.

If the lava lake completely hardens, does it make it more likely to have an explosive eruption? I know that is uncommon for Hawaiian volcanos, but I was wondering if the hardened lava lake could cause that.
@Biteyourownteeth3 жыл бұрын
yes
@bkreativepainting74613 жыл бұрын
The hardened lava lake was for the most part not covering any vents and the lava just sinks to the low point In the summit caldera, forming the lake, so it wasn’t adding overall much of a heavy duty rock plug except for when it filled past the venthole
@bkreativepainting74613 жыл бұрын
However once the vent is covered, plugging the hole, the pressure will rise incrementally regardless, but it also needs to be considered this was a summit caldera event, and not a flank fissure event and when an eruption occurs, this is the volcano venting internal magmatic pressure, so eruptions bleed pressure from the system- flank eruptions tend to happen when summit inflation is at a high pressure which causes deflation events and reduces the chance of flank pressure events
@bkreativepainting74613 жыл бұрын
So the more summit caldera events Kilauea has, the less chance of an explosive flank fissure event, since the crustal overflow is obviously still happening at the moment as indicated by this video, it means internal pressure is not high enough for flank eruptions…..at the moment, if we stop getting caldera events it would be more concerning for those living at the volcanos flanks for an explosive eruption
@KaiserStormTracking3 жыл бұрын
The lake is fed by fissures meaning if lava is to erupt from the bottom then yes it will be slightly explosive at first then transition to either lava fountains or a lake at the crater. I do really wanna see lava fountains rise out of the pit crater tho
