Thank you for another amazing year of geological videos! I had no idea the lava could drain back into the volcano.

Even viscous lava can drain back. Popocatepetl often experiences deflating of the summit lava "dome" which is more like a thick pond of pasty andesitic lava.

Aloha Professor Tim, This is a very interesting observation about sucking the lava back into the vent. So basically, the Halemaumau Crater can keep repeating this process over and over again. The bad news however, it the amount of VOG we are experiencing right now along the south shores of all the islands right now, especially in the afternoons when it starts clouding up, almost like California’s “June Gloom” conditions. 🤔

First, best Christmas present, second. My boss booked a vacation and was like Hawaii, or Vegas. He chose poorly. And 3rd. I hope I live long enough to see the drop down zone Over top itself. That would be amazing. I wish I could live longer to see more geologic miracles. We are only alive for a fraction of a second on our geologic timescale. I have always wished to see what flood basalt events would be like. I will take all I can get while I am here. And thank you for Geology Hub for doing all the hard work to bring these events to the masses. Merry Christmas sir.

It has already started erupting again at a low level before your video was published.
@AlpakaWhacker16 сағат бұрын
Looking at the cams, it appears that lava has already started erupting or I guess the better word would be effusing as the dominant vent seems to be acting more like weak overspill from a lava lake rather than lava fountains

Kilauea has been acting really weird these past few decades. I really wonder if we're at some sort of tipping point, it almost feels like its heading towards the style of activity it had in the 1700's with the massive rootless lava lake filling the caldera. Maybe there's been a fresh deep injection of magma.
@brianmckee399121 сағат бұрын
So was there so much gas in the magma that it pushed out the lava, and then offgassed causing the lava to fall back in to fill the void made by the gas? Is that what happened?

You report lava erupting at 85 cubic meters per second. How do volcanologists determine that figure?

Kilauea is well known for these drain back events. The systematic Deflation Inflation DI events are common as well. What was truly interesting about this eruption was the super short lead time which triggered a jump from Advisory past Watch and to Warning. It's not common you see less than 30 mins from the start of a quake swarm then into Tremor and eruption. The last time this short of a lead happened was the first event after 2018. That first event did something similar which caught the HVO by surprise.

It is fascinating to see but we had to do a lot of walking when we visited years ago and weren’t allowed to get a good vantage point because of the wind direction and gas levels.🥵We visited the caldera and the coastal lava flow. The volcano is enormous - lots of driving. Hope your trip when you go is a better experience 🤗

How do you work out how much larva a volcano is erupting. I know how to work it out after it finishes but looking at a larva fountain how do you know its output.
@cyndikarp3368Сағат бұрын
1959 was last time Kilauea had drainback of lava. Lava over filled & then drainback into eruption site. Same this time?

Newb question: Is there a proper name describing previously erupted lava that drains back into the vent that it was erupted from? It just seems like this phenomenon is too cool to have someone NOT yet give it a name/proper term.
@WatcherNine21 сағат бұрын
I wonder if that crater would ever fill up and over flow, or would the walls collapse and send a tsunami of lava downhill? Hopefully not toward a town. Overall, are we seeing an increase in volcanic activity across the globe versus past years? If so, is that possible a result of higher solar activity combined with a weakening magnetic field?

Why do u call kilauea a caldera when its a shield volcano not a caldera
@joecorsaro138115 сағат бұрын
Kīlauea is the shield volcano. Halemaʻumaʻu is the caldera at its summit/the volcano’s main crater where this eruption is occurring
@GeologyHub14 сағат бұрын
It is a shield volcano, but current events are occurring purely within one of its summit calderas. (The calderas overlap each other, 2018 vs older)
@johnstough148713 сағат бұрын
@@GeologyHub doesnt a volcano have to produce vei 7-8 eruptions to form a caldera
@Dragrath13 сағат бұрын
@@johnstough1487 No all it takes for a caldera to form is a large enough drop in the magma chamber's volume large explosive eruptions can quickly result in this occurring as Plinian eruptive style expels huge amounts of material very quickly but large effusive flank eruptions from a volcano like Kilauea's 2018 flank eruption can also produce calderas and the formation of the 2018 caldera was in fact caught on film curtesy of how well monitored the volcano is and the slower nature of the collapse compared to an explosive eruption.

If this gentleman was truely a volcanologist, what are his credentials? Possessing a geologist degree and claiming to have knowledge about volcanoes does not qualify. I am a volcanologist, I should know. I have a graduate degree in volcanic geochemistry This channel has made numerous false claims and far-fetched assumptions and has even discredited himself.
