So glad to see y'all review my beloved Suntory yellow label! I enjoyed it greatly while visiting Taipei and Osaka, it mixes wonderfully with "Apple Sidre," a carbonated apple "juice" sold in Taiwan, and makes a delightfully drinkable highball.

Kilchoman was one of the first Islays I connected with. They are doing some tasty stuff. I had the 100% Islay earlier this year and found it floral and herbaceous, both on the nose and on the palate. Not a lot of bite, but rich, creamy, and full bodied. Surprisingly, the finish doesn't linger, but it does start to sneak up on you as you sip. Definitely leans into the smokey peat, though the cereal sweetness adds a nice balance. As much as I have had several Kilchoman expressions, I don't seem to have made many notes on them. However, for the ones I do have notes on, there is a distinct family resemblance.

I live in Japan. Suntory Kakubin (the whisky in this video) is not particularly great or even memorable. But it may be the easiest-drinking, least offensive budget whisky you'll ever try. That is what's most remarkable about it. And it's dirt cheap (around $10 a bottle). It's quite an accomplishment. And the label isn't lying. It makes a really refreshing club soda highball.

July 17, 2019 - Watching from the Castle Hotel in Huntly, Scotland. A truly terroir driven whisky! You guys NEED to visit Islay! It’s a magical place! About 98%+ of Scottish barley comes from the eastern coast as well as eastern England because it is relatively drier than the western side of the UK. So, Kilchoman producing whisky from 100% Islay barely is quite unique. They also have a malting floor which is rare these days (there are around 8 Scotch distilleries that do) but they still use barely from Port Ellen for their other whiskies.

Glad to see you guys touched on Kilchoman! 100% Islay is good stuff. I've got a bit of the 7th edition left. I've had Sanaig, Sauternes Cask Finish, and the most recent Red Wine Cask. Honestly, though, I've found the finishes to be a little dull, like the secondary spirit is muting rather than complementing the subtler notes of the Kilchoman base malt. In my experience, the ex-bourbon Kilchomans are where the distillery really shines, much like Laphroaig. I'd love to try a Kilchoman at 9 years or more at least partially from European oak. (Have you guys tried Laphroaig The 1815 Legacy Edition? Or An Cuan Mòr?) For now, though, I am absolutely loving the 10.5-year ex-bourbon Private Cask that I recently won by auction. That guy is easily in the top 10 of my current whisky collection.

@canadianwhiskysmith64535 жыл бұрын
I can't find my notes on Machir Bay, but I seem to recall it being a touch sweeter than the 100% Islay. Looking at my notes, there is a distinct family resemblance between the 100% and other releases. If I was to describe it, the 100% Islay is like the purest expression of what Kilchoman has to offer. Everything else builds off that foundation.

I've been watching for a couple weeks now, and have been loving every minute of it. Looking at the spreadsheet of what's in the vault, I'm surprised there is so little from Europe outside of the British Isles. Is whiskey really not made in those countries, or is it just hard to get your hands on it? I think it would be interesting to compare a bunch and see what sort of cultural variations you get.
@canadianwhiskysmith64535 жыл бұрын
There are a few European brands that have decent international distribution, but many don't. And those that do manage to get exported to North America don't usually have the economy of scale to make them particularly competitive. Taste for taste, they don't always stack up against bigger, more established brands at the same price point. All that said, it is absolutely fascinating to try whiskies from a variety of countries side-by-side. It would probably make a good Whiskey Tribe episode: Around the World in 20 Malts.

@canadianwhiskysmith64535 жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware they were ceasing production of whisky. My understanding is they are running out of aged stock and can no longer bottle their flagship, age statement products. Many Japanese brands are sourcing stock from other countries (based on flavour profiles) and bottling it just so they have products on the shelves. However, products like Vodka and Gin can be turned around in 2 to 3 weeks. To maintain cashflow and add depth to product lines, it isn't surprising they would look to producing young spirits. However, I would guess that it is in addition to laying away new make. Discontinue sale of aged brands to build up barrel reserves; push sale of young spirits to pay the bills.
@Rose.Of.Hizaki5 жыл бұрын
@@canadianwhiskysmith6453 Aged suntory whiskies were flying off the shelves so they made their money but when they stopped thats when the prices skyrocketted and went up more than 3-4x (or even more at some retailers - depending on the whisky) its original price.Im guessing most of the money from the inflated prices went to the retailer rather than the brewery themselves. I have a partially consumed Hibiki 12 but i cant bring myself to drink it know that i bought it for about £60 and now its worth between £300-600 where found.

It's a shame that the best Japanese whiskies never get exported in volume. The commodity stuff is now way overpriced. I have a bottle of Yamazaki 12 I purchased in 1994 that still has the 3400Yen price sticker on it (US$32). That's about what it's worth IMHO... maybe $45 at a stretch.
@doomblitz19935 жыл бұрын
The problem is 2 fold, the decrease in supply because the Japanese scaled down production a while ago and the spike in demand, with the distilleries scaling up production again, the prices will probably normalise.
@canadianwhiskysmith64535 жыл бұрын
Price is a reflection of rarity, not necessarily quality. As I understand it, they're running out of stocks even for their domestic market. At least that's something I heard from a friend who recently visited Japan.

@@canadianwhiskysmith6453 Certainly. But with respect to "Japanese whisky" it's a bit bizarre because the grain/spirit/barrels can literally come from anywhere (other than Japan) because there is basically ZERO legal regulation of Japanese whisky origin/labeling/production.
