Kilchoman Loch Gorm Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I've always loved this expression but the 2019 was disappointing. I think it's been getting older every year and I preferred it when it was young. On paper I would say it is worth it as it's Islay peat and sherry with an age statement. The 2019 needed to be 50% because it was a bit thin and it's kind of put me off. I think the Loch Gorm should be bottled at 50% to nail the price/quality and beef it up a bit. Cheers Erik.

The pricing is really overwhelming even though it is the best of their standard range. It CANNOT compare with Supernova or Octomore. Cannot understand their pricing policy.

Two things: First, we do get a wee bit more whisky in our bottles at 750 ML and sometimes a slightly higher abv. Second, we have these damn tariffs on imported Single Malt whisky from the EU. Once the tariffs go away I am hope we will see a lowering of prices.

One of my all time favorite whiskies! I think only the one that beats it for me is the Madeira matured Kilchoman!

Loch Gorm is definitely our favorite of the core line, we totally agree with your review!

Another great review. However, the presented expression is the 2016 edition and with Loch Gorm, being an annual release, variances between editions are said to be quite noticeable. I have a bottle of 2018 edition still unopened and I'm looking forward to get a bottle of 2020 edition once it becomes available on our market. 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, natural color, sherry-matured (not finished) and age stated. I cannot think of another Islay single malt core expression, except Bunnahabhain 12, that offers all those at same or lower price. Bunnahabhain 12 is virtually unpeated though. Where I live Loch Gorm sells for the equivalent of about 68 USD. This is almost exactly the price of Ardbeg Uigeadail which albeit being a high ABV monster of a malt has no age statement and is not fully sherry-matured.

It does change every year because one of the reasons is it gets a bit older every year. I don't know if the recipe has remained consistent. My favourite bottlings were 2015 and 2016. Punchy Islay peat and sherry. I think it's thinning as it gets older and needs more abv to compensate.

2018 and 2020 are both excellent. 2018 was a bit more fresh and coast-grassy on the nose, whereas the 2020 is way more dense (youngest casks in there now 9 years already, up to 13 years) and fruity, with more hints of laphroaigy medicinal notes creeping up the nostrils. Love both to death. Kilchomans smoke flavor is also possibly the most tasty smoke I've had yet, despite being very much present.

@@welshtoro3256 I didn't get my hands on that particular expression, but good to know it's no loss. All in all though I immensely enjoy what Kilchoman does, and especially now, where the younger casks in the Loch Gorm are creeping towards two-digit-years of age, I am excited to see where they're heading.

I appreciate the intention of 100% Islay but the Loch Gorm is a better bottle.

Good question! I have been thinking about that very thing but have not yet come to a conclusion. I'll need to do some comparison tasting to figure it out. Maybe I'll do a live stream on it.
