Being too young, it really sucks that me and so many other young metalheads won’t ever be able to see legends like Chuck Schuldiner, Dave Brockie, Peter Steele, Jeff Hanneman, and LG Petrov perform. Thanks for sharing this, man.

My dad and his band used to rent a room out in a recording studio in Richmond back in the 90's, Gwar owned the rehearsal space. He said Dave would come by every once in a while and hang out, even showed my dad one of the new outfits. Cool fact, Lamb of God also rented out a studio in the same building around that time, before they were popular. Cool video! RIP Dave

Who doesn't love to sing along with The Road Behind in their best Brockie impersonation voice? I know I do. He blasted me in the face unexpectedly after the intro when the lights were down. I had no idea he had it aimed right at my head until the stage lights and the song hit again. Bam! Thanks Dave!

I still have the scar on my forehead where Dave Brockie accidentally hit me with the head of his bass at a Death Piggy show in Charlottesville in early 80s. (My band Baby Opaque opened). It stopped the show, blood everywhere. I had to leave show, go to hospital and get stitches. As I was leaving the club, Brockie said "PLEASE don't sue me. If you don't sue me I'll give you guest list for life with backstage for any band I'm in." I said "I wasn't going to sue you but I'll take you up on that." and I did. Later he paid me 500 bucks to edit his Whargoul novel, and thanked me in the credits. Was cool. I was about to be evicted and that money staved it off.

I wonder why he wasn’t buried here in Ottawa, Canada where he was born (and I’ve now lived for 21-years). I’m glad I got to see him with Gwar three times.
@KillbotAndGorGorAttack Жыл бұрын
Probably because he was so proud of Richmond. From what I gather, the band seemed to be the only family he had. His brother died in the 80s, his mom died, his father wasn’t in his life, etc.
@JaymeSplendid Жыл бұрын
I think its because Richmond was his home, where he went to school and where Gwar and everyone else was from in and around that area. Without Richmond, there would have been no Gwar. He spent more of his life there than in Canada. This can be the only reason I can think of.

I've been researching their comics and newsletters and I realized there's not much info on them online besides old ebay listings on worthpoint. I'd love to see you do a video on Dave's art and the Gwar comics. If you ever want any info in the future, I could email you stuff.

@@KillbotAndGorGorAttack Nice, so far I have Slave Pit Funnies #1-7, the Phallus in Wonderland Viewer's Guide, and Skullheadface. From what I've gathered, outside of the latest comics and the four non-Gwar Slave Pit Funnies, there's around 29 documented issues Mind Control Monthly newsletters before its fan driven PDF only resurrection in 2007. There are also some comics Dave, Don, Hunter, and Chuck contributed to and/or made around the early 80s to the late 90s. I've only seen pictures of a lot of these and wrote down the dates. It's very interesting.

Being 46, I got to see Gwar play a few times before Dave's death. I saw them right after America Must Be Destroyed and what was cool about that release was on the day it dropped, 88.9 the radio station at MSU had a metal show called 'Hours O Power' and they played the whole damn album. I was 16 when that dropped. Went to see them about a month later in Detroit. The last show was in 2007/8 -Nov- EDIT: (No, it was in OCT around my birthday) during the Obama Election and the P. man himself returned and did Slaughterama. Besides that song, the ones that stick out the most where Bring Back The Bomb, Ham On The Bone, Techo's song which they renamed to Bozo and I think Maggots. This was in Newport News which funny enough, we hopped a coal train out of Richmond to go see them, we were COVERED in coal dust and had to do the best we could to wash ourselves off. Since we were riding freight trains and sleeping outside and only had the clothes on our backs, I did NOT go up to the front as we were going to be sleeping in an unfinished construction site not too far from the venue and it was cold, even with our sleeping gear. I am really blessed that I got to see them that last time. Unlike the time I was too drunk to see Johnny Cash when he played at Michigan fest sometime in 97ish? How I was much too punk to go see Metallica, Guns N Roses and Faith No more and refused to go or how I was "too punk" to enjoy Nirvana that my brother dragged me to. Tho, on an upside on Nirvana, I was 14 right when Nevermind dropped, and it took a while for it to get big and I seen a small add for the album date in my Transworld Skateboard mag and thinking to myself "Oh yeah, they where on that skate video and played with Twitch in Ann Arbor a year before that album dropped.So I saw them twice, each time at a small/midsize venue and both times we went there for a whole different band. Tho when Nirvana did end up playing at the Blind Pig, Smells like Teen Spirit just started to really hit which again, too punk for anything on MTV but had yet to really go crazy, that would be 3 months later.
