I agree with Jackie. The little white dove would look beautiful displayed with the sun shining through your window. If it was possible to have a 2nd favourite it would be the school slate. It has been difficult for many students over the past two years & this slate is a reminder that it was always difficult, yet important to educate the young (& young at heart).

My impression when I saw the piece of lead Gail found is that it may have originally been double that size and attached to a length of thin rope. The rope and weight were used for 'sounding' depths from small platforms either side of the bow of vessels at a location described as 'the chains'. The rope usually had knots at intervals of either one or six feet the latter of which comprises a 'fathom'. A reliable and skilled sailor could measure the distance to the bottom by casting the lead weight then counting the number of knots when they retrieved it after it reached the bottom. Depth soundings were relayed back to officers standing with a helmsman on the 'poop' deck who subtracted the known distance from the chains to the mean water level or 'plimsoll' line to derive actual depth. Reliability was prerequisite to the task because repeatedly casting and retrieving the heavy lead weight was tedious and tiring. When some sailors became particularly tired they might occasionally seek illicit respite by 'swinging the lead'. This entailed maintaining an appearance of casting instead of actually doing so hence the use of the term to describe someone suspected of not 'pulling their weight'. As you might imagine sounding the depth was a very important responsibility directly related to the imminent safety of a vessel and everybody on board. Some scholars have suggested the term 'sounding' is derived from an arcane English word 'sund' meaning 'sea, water, or swimming'.

One of the US based channels I watch (Adventure Archaeology) - Brandon brings a potato rake or grabbers when he creek walks so he can reach things that are in sight but the water is too deep/swift. Might be handy for grabbing those out of reach treasures or helping excavate things from the bank. I love the ordinary-every day ness of the slate for the window.
