Chandler reworked a number of his pulp magazine stories into book-length treatments. This one was folded into "The Big Sleep" with major plot elements included and expanded. A few of the character's names came across through the rewrite, like "Carmen." Bogart starred in the 1946 noir classic film in 1946. Both film and book treatments are classics in this genre.

1978 Robert Mitchum version of The Big Sleep not bad, easier to follow the story because the nasty bits explained while in the 40s they had to beat around that bush ... Mitchum good but, ya can't beat Bogy...

Happy to hear this story. The AI voice is surprisingly good in its timber, but otherwise lifeless in its phrasing and inflection. I will skip this channel hereafter.

Weird. I've heard a story with half these elements. But only half. Best guess? Someone read this and reworked it.

No. Many Chandler short stories reworked by the author, combined and turned into novels.

@peterbianchi6219 Yes. That's quite possible too. Thanks. 👍

@@brucebaker810 Yes it was Chandler himself following the example of Hammett in the Dane Curse. These writers were professionals - never waste a good idea!

@@brucebaker810Another Comment mentions that parts of this went into "The Big Sleep" too

@@markrossow6303 Aha! Now I'll have to ho back and listen to that again. Or scan a synopsis. The familiar elements orbit the smut rental.
