Dr. Richard Austin Freeman was a British writer of detective stories, mostly featuring the medico-legal forensic investigator Dr. Thorndyke.

He invented the inverted detective story (a crime fiction in which the commission of the crime is described at the beginning, usually including the identity of the perpetrator, with the story then describing the detective's attempt to solve the mystery). Roberts said that this invention was Freeman's most noticeable contribution to detective fiction. Freeman used some of his early experiences as a colonial surgeon in his novels. Many of the Dr. Thorndyke stories involve genuine, but sometimes arcane, points of scientific knowledge, from areas such as tropical medicine, metallurgy and toxicology.
Saturday Night Theatre was a long-running radio drama strand on BBC Radio 4. The strand showcased feature-length, middle-brow single plays on Saturday evenings for more than 50 years, having been launched in April 1943. The plays featured in the strand included stage plays, book adaptations and original dramatisations. For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries. (Wikipedia)

Great story with an unusual conclusion. The great think about radio is we use our imagination to picture the events and characters.

Marvellous ! What voices! What diction ! And a plot as ingenious as any of Dame Agathas. In fact , she may have even borrowed some elements of it ? Well worth looking out for Dr Thorndyke books in charity shops ! Intelligent, civilized entertainment of highest order.

Such a shame that Molly Hardwick's other Thorndyke adaptation for Saturday Night Theatre seems to be missing 🙁 It was 'Corpse In The Case' (9th June 1962) and based on Dr Thorndyke Intervenes.. This is tremendous though..

Dental records were never requested and the finger nails of the mummy bore evidence of mummification. The inquest shaped the outcome of the inquiry based on acceptable evidence. I think I hv listened to too many of these wonderful Brit crime stories that I attempt to solve cases! Question. Why is the act of auctioning mortal remains is not seen as a crime of sacrilege at best and the mistreatment of mortal remains in the least. These ancient peoples should be left in eternal rest.

Philip HEMA, This is fiction, but would you complain about the moving of a graveyard to build on, or an archialogoical dig in ancient cemeteries, or divers removing artifacts from sunken vessels declared a graveyard. I think even now let alone 60 years ago this is not so strange, for collectors/scientists.
