Combos originated in Street Fighter II and the visual combo counter started either in Super SFII or possibly before that. I kinda see where you're going with this, however, in that both KI and MK3 employed dial-a-combo button chaining but MK3 differed in that you couldn't really sustain the ground-based part of the combo with special moves. Rather, the special moves were mostly only usable once your auto-combo knocked the opponent into the air.
@joeneway

@blakfloyd
@blakfloyd 5 жыл бұрын
@@joeneway this might be your own experience where you lived but where I lived SSFII thrived from day one and held on for a while. It was also heavily lauded in EGM, Gamepro, and basically any other gaming press where I saw it mentioned. During the SSFII/MKII heyday of late 1993 til late 1994, those were basically always the two most crowded areas in the arcades around here and people would kinda fuck with Dark Stalkers and Primal Rage out of curiosity. Beyond that, I wasn't saying combos started in Super SFII, I said they started in SFII which was nearly a full four years before KI (February 1991 versus late 1994).
@joeneway

@blakfloyd
@blakfloyd 5 жыл бұрын
@@joeneway are you saying combos, themselves, were new or that having a visible, on-screen display showing the amount of hits your combo did was new? I'm saying combos existed since the original version of SFII and that the on-screen display originated in Super SFII. And again, you and I have different takes on Super SFII's popularity level but the most respected gaming media of the time supports my side. I don't know if you meant to say "Mortal Kombat 3" instead of "MK Trilogy" but the latter was never even released in arcades, just PS and N64. KI was an incredible game and I like it as much as any SF game and better than any MK game except for MKII which I barely like more than it. And I agree that the combos were a spectacle and made a name for the game right out of the gate. I just think you're glossing over the fact that combos were already a huge part of the consciousness of fighting game fans by that point and that KI just upped that level a bit more. EGM and Gamepro (shit, probably all of the other major gaming mags too) had numerous issues with combo and strategy lists for MK and SF games. EGM even went as far as to make a separate, stand-alone mini-magazine for MKII and packed it in with one of their issues in early '94.

I remember getting this game when it came out, with the soundtrack CD. It was a great CD! I was sooo excited because when I played KI in the arcade, it was supposed to be released with the Nintendo Ultra64 system, but the Ultra64 kept getting delayed. I was able to master all the combos for every character, and spent hours playing it both in the arcade and SNES. Front what I remember, KI was the first fighting game that tracked and linked combos. This game was a pioneer for the fighting genre, and many games followed the combo trend to this day. Also, don't be a naysayer about Orchid and her boob-show finisher. As an early teenage boy at the time, I thought this was so taboo in a video game, and made it that much cooler.

I play the game like clock work and if you played it enough you notice that her panther move when pulled off with a (mp) was a two hit mid to low attack. That being said was extremely hard to block when having to predict when it would be used in kombat. The best way to deal with any of her panther specials is to counter with an uppercut. If you don't agree then try it out, believe me it 9/10 its easier and sends a message to the opponent that will have them use it less often. Just saying

Actually... there was not only one version of the tiger, the one with the weak punch you had to "low block", and the one with the hard punch you just "normal block", but if you got hit by the strong punch version while "low bloking" you get hit bu the skill, so Orchid could start a combo, and in the Snes version you could not combo breaker the tiger first or seccond hit, only the first next move, but this without the "easy combo breaker" activated of course, but ECB is for noobs lol!

Orchid's panther combo can be blocked, the first hit is a regular standing hit, but the second one is a low blow, you need to crouch guard to block it. or crouch guard both hits, that works to, but you expose yourself to an overhead. Eyedol has an unblockable overhead combo starter, but boss characters are allowed to be cheap like that.

I think the historical context and business side are especially important to understanding the place of Killer Instinct. As stated fighting games were huge at the time with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat being the most successful, both in arcades and home consoles. KI was the attempt by Rare and Nintendo to get a slice of that action themselves. They signed a deal with Midway to get it into arcades and utilizing some of the technology behind the N64. This made it a cross-promotion for the N64 where it was supposed to be a launch title. Everything got downgraded when it was ported to the SNES, however, due to delays in the N64 launch. It also signaled a change in direction for Nintendo who had previously eschewed more violent games, most notably seen in the controversy surrounding Mortal Kombat which further characterized the Genesis as the "edgy", teen-oriented console (and it was entirely as '90s as it sounds). The game itself ended up as a mash-up of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and the pre-rendered graphics that Rare had become known for with Donkey Kong Country. It certainly incorporated its own unique ideas -- most notably the combo and combo breaker system -- but it was still very much inspired by the then-current market leaders. And that's what it was. Nintendo's response to the then-current fighting game boom utilizing their newest hardware and their most popular second-party developer who was seen at the time as being one of the most technically capable. Nintendo marketed it VERY aggressively to try to make it stick and it certainly attracted an audience, but never became the clear, market-dominating success and system-seller that it was intended to be.

This is an excellent comment, albeit a bit cynical. There's some implication here that Rare/Nintendo were simply jumping onto a bandwagon, but they added many aspects to the 1v1 fighting genre that helped Killer Instinct not only stand out, but advance the genre.

It's really hard to overstate the impact this game had in the arcade. The SNES version is good but it doesn't do it justice. Just hearing the game at the arcade was an experience, the music was incredible, the sounds perfect, the people jockeying just for the opportunity to see the screen while people put their quarters on the screen to mark their place in line. It was the biggest game of the era, not an evolution but an event and experience, the first high-quality 3D game. Going to the mall on Friday and you'd find the area KI packed with people, some having printouts showing the possible combos, the information they got from the 1994 internet. Those were the days. If I could just go back for 1 week...

The SF2/MK hybrid we all gravitated to. Remember, those were the days of porting arcade calibre into the home & if it was done with effort & care, we were in. KI on SNES was cool because games that weren't ready for N64 (& vice versa) weren't held back, they were fine tuned & unleashed for SNES gamers all the same - not just ditched or shelved. I still casual play, its combos are all kinds of mini payoff wins.

Loved the video, I definitely agree that people don't give Killer Instinct the respect it deserves! As you mentioned in the video, I think it is largely because people don't take the time to truly learn the ins and outs of the combo system. I must say though, as a competitive Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 player, I definitely have to disagree with your dismissal of the complexity of Mortal Kombat. MK1 and MK2 are pretty clunky and do lack depth in the gameplay department, for sure. UMK3, however, is extrememly polished, balanced and, if people are willing to put the time into it, has a VERY high skill cap. I am referring to the arcade version here, of course, as the home ports were plagued with some balance issues. This is coming from someone who is well versed in all major fighting game franchises like Street Fighter, Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters, Killer Instinct, Tekken, etc. Anyway, just wanted to throw in my two cents, love your channel!

I just got the X BOX ONE version last week. It was pretty good but a lot of characters have to be unlocked. Even guys like Cinder and Raptie are locked. At least Clacious, Orchid, and Sabrewolf are a bailable to the get go.

I bought this used and still have the "Killer Cuts" that came with the game. But yeah, I played this one like a Street Fighter game. It was really good but I just couldn't get a hang of those insane combos.

It was just as hard if not harder to master 10 hit combos in Tekken, but for some reason, I always found the KI games more satisfying (particularly the original and Gold). I think the difficulty with Tekken had more to do with the timing, whereas with KI it was about overcoming combo breakers. I can't ever remember getting such bad blisters on my thumbs, with the exception of Zangief's strongest moves in Street Fighter 2, which required a 360° rotation on the d-pad to execute. He had to be in spitting distance, and they were hard as hell even against button-mashers.

I never actually played the SNES version of "Killer Instinct" when I was a kid, but I did own the Game Boy version, which plays just as fine despite it not including Riptor and Cinder as playable characters.

Killer Instinct is my favorite game of all time. It's the only reason I switched from Playstation to Xbox when the Xbox One came out. The CD that came with it was the best soundtrack. Every song was badass.

Played and still play now and again the GB port, which was quite good considering the 8-bit and two button limitations.

I have a still-shrinkwrapped Killer Instinct with the Killer Cuts CD inside. I picked it up for 10 bucks years ago. I've seen them go for $250 in recent years which is ridic.

Don't forget to mention how beautiful were those prerendered graphics on the arcade version. It was the future, a sneak peak to the next generation of video games. The snes version lacked some awesome and beautiful effects like the shadow combos or the stage fatalities, that were downgraded

Explaining Killer Instinct play progression as simply as possible: Beginner Spinal: "Why doesn't he combo?" Intermediate Spinal: "Shield rush, backspin swordsweep and thrust! Absorb and reflect projectiles. Yeah, Spinal got tapped!" Expert Spinal: "Why is he transforming in the middle of long combos?"

This game is absolutely my favorite fighter hands down. I dont really like these style of games but I personally feel this was like street fighter mixed with mortal kombat thought up by someone on speed. Its good. Its clean, especially if you are not a button masher you can execute combos with ease and the combos have a lot of variations. If you really got into it you would know which combo was a good counter then be able to fake that combo and execute an even better one. Bots were OP but beating it on full stars was seriously always satisfactory, even if it took 0 or 27 continues lol.
