I am a homeless man I am 26 I live in South Carolina I work a full time job I move furniture 10 dollars a hour 40 hours a week for a year I live in my car in a Walmart parking lot I shower at the gym it's been a year and a half since I lived in a home I have no family no support system and there are no programs towards a working male with no children my anxiety used to be so bad I'd not leave the house I didn't know what to do I just took care of my grandfather till he passed for 8 years he was the last person I had never worked I just was scared of people and so I barely spoke to anyone since I left highschool but then I had no money no home and I made it down to my last 20 dollars in a car not registered to me without insurance I could barely afford food but now that I've worked my way out of this hole and I have money and I work it's not enough to afford even a small apartment where I live and I just can't find programs this is about to be my 2nd summer out here but I'm still pushing for a better future for myself

I appreciate it guys there's always someone else that has it worse off I try not to focus on it too much in my area u could go to downtown and on 1 block see government assistance homes then go another block and see quarter million dollar homes it's less that I'm struggling and more that u see so many who are not struggling and you just ask why me it's hard being alone in all of this but I work on my days off I'm thinking of going back to school it's like I said earlier I'm always trying to work towards a better future for myself my area is a good place to live tons of work and fairly cheap place to live I just had no skills my year of work has changed that I will hopefully take a new better job as a forklift operator soon but of the program's I tried soon as I said my situation they would say sorry our programs are closed right now I never asked for help or assistance I just pulled myself up by the bootstraps and went for it I just need a chance at a better job or something which hopefully I'll get soon but again I appreciate the comments guys gotta get back into work you guys be safe out there

I'm a firefighter in atlanta and I've work for 3 different metro atlanta departments. Killer mike is right in most places you can have a misdemeanor and wont get hired at a fire department.

I've worked closely with a lot of wildland firefighters, including in California, and I can confirm that ex-convicts can't be hired in wildland fire either, even if they have years of experience as inmate firefighters. Governor Newsom modified that law very recently, but I doubt much has changed in practice, at least not yet

I did some time in solitary during a stay in a juvenile correctional institution in my teens. To be honest, I don't understand why people have such a problem with it. It was like a vacation from all the crazy savages in the general population. At least you don't have to watch your back when you're locked alone in a cell. Looking back at it, I can say that I honestly preferred solitary over being in a cell with three other people that I didn't trust.

i was an inmate wildland fire fighter for 4 years at both california state forestry and los angeles i worked my way up from the lowest position to crew leader twice. yes the pay was 1 dollar an hour from the time you leave the camp on a fire until you return to the camp... i also received a monthly pay of anywhere from 20.00 to 55.00 depending on my job position... it was the most dangerous, brutally hard job ive ever done and the most personally fulfulling job ive ever had. it was also the safest and easiest time i ever did. california state prisons and county jails are by far the scariest most dangerous places ive ever experienced. a decade out of prison and off parole i still cant believe i survived that nightmare. however, when your a non violent offender with no escape history or sex crimes you can request fire camp...if approved you go to one of the two wildland fire training programs that the department of corrections and cal dept forestry jointly run. once you graduate you are sent to one of the several dozens of camps throught california. most are cdf and the remainder, la county and san diego fire dept camps. you are treated much better at the camps the food is good and portions bigger more personal space and freedom... there are rarely fences and you are free to run hike etc as long as your there for count times. you also get an added reduction in your sentence. i know you cant work for la county fire after a felony but the us forestry will hire you and your prison wildland fire fighting experience counts as previous work history. there should be more fire camps in my opinion. they are humane meaningful and benifitial to both the rehabilitation of convicted persons and providing a huge service to local communities and society in general.

Imagine a prison system that genuinely aimed to rehabilitate its inmates. Imagine how drastically different the system would operate. Not only would the operations vary drastically in regards to how they operate now, but the very laws which warrant arrests in the first place would change immensely. Especially in regards to the number of laws, as well as the severity of punishment.(There's also crimes being committed that aren't amounting adequate levels of punishments. I'm not sure ho that correlates with the narrative, but it's definitely an issue needing remedy) Breaking a person who's already either broken but fixable, or broken to the point of no repair, obviously lessens(or completely negates)any chance at rehabilitation. When it comes to the prison system: It's more like "no gain, no pain" Translation: If there are no financial gains to be had from a crooked system then there's no unnecessary pain to be suffered.

But you CAN dramatically reduce it, and increase quality and access to education in poverty stricken places, provide incentives for business in those areas, and help change the status quo in those areas by setting the right example, and being a role model to those who need help.

Poverty is a symptom of criminality, not the cause. Fatherlessness, regardless of race, is the most reliable indicator for criminality and poverty. Mass incarceration is not a thing. Incarcerating the the large number of convicted violent criminals has been partially responsible for cutting the violent crime rate in the US in half & maintaining that drop for over a decade. Simply characterizing that as if people were rounded up and jailed en masse is a disingenuous misdirection from terrible but popular policies stretching back decades.

If you are to the point in prison where you are locked down 23 hours with one hour out in a small space you earned it, definitely not standard treatment for most inmates. That is not a loophole in the 13th amendment. The 13th amendment has that in there so that prisoners who are supposed to be in jail wont try to sue the government and claim that them being in jail is unconstitutional. Each student grouped up on different aspects of that topic and made the best plan 300 kids could do in 4 months. It took everyone as much time as they could give and was still ruff in that time frame. I am going to find our work and put it out. Class of 98, so some time ago but still valid I bet. I know our findings and actions got D.C. recognition from the letters sent by the President's office. My point is 300 or so 17 year old kids were able to get the white house saying WoW this is legitimate great job. I know from my job as 1 of project coordinators our work was sound from every angle. So why can't our ELECTED Politicians whom should be highly educated and most very experienced figure this out. Voting just doesn't seem to work but on very local offices. This needs to be our focus along with educating our youth plus workforces. I'm from West Virginia which is a state not western Virginia. We were and are behind in technology but hard working and RESPECTABLE ppl and still made a plan better than anybody in our Government. The idea of redistributing wealth to poor situations and then the poor will become productive sounds like a noble idea until it gets put into practise. This cycle of compassion only works if u have a stable number of wealthy people. Once gov forces people to pay more the natural consequence is those wealthy will leave and not many will work to get there. So fairly rapidly the cycle will break. He said there were inmates with him who were willing to do it for free, just to be out of the prison for a little bit. Inmates cannot become fire-fighters because in order to get into the firefighter program you have to first get other certifications that you cannot apply for with a felony. Prisoners are paid but most of that money, if not all of it, goes to paying restitution for their crimes or for basic supplies or extra food that is sold at inflated rates of 200+% markup from what you would pay outside prison.

Being a felon does not make you ineligible to fight fire for the state. Many inmates who have been crew workers in fire camps have gone on to get hired on after getting out.
