stumbled on to your punk collection video by accident...I'm 70 years old, 1st punk show, (was not called punk then) was the stooges back in 1969...called Garage before that..Hung out at CBGB and too many clubs to list...Bands played down on the lower east side in apartments..Those days are gone forever..Loved the early 80's hardcore scene..Was a hardcore skinhead..Appreciate your interest in this music..I still listen while taking my 4 mile walks..Miss the slam dancing...I had hundreds of cassettes of this stuff..Most is here on youtube now, but not all..WFMU collage radio has many shows that play stuff you might not get on youtube...Keep on listening......

My vote is for lumping in various genres into one video. While I enjoy genre specific ones, I think this limits your viewership in that genres others aren’t into or familiar with may just skip watching. At least with a mixed bag there’s something for everyone, an unexplored genre may pique a person’s interest, and you get to flex your diverse (and excellent) tastes. I’m excited you have Black Randy & The Metrosquad and 100 Flowers added to your collection; the former may take a few listens to really appreciate how awesome the album is as a whole. Crass? Love them! They’re a good intro into early Anarcho-Punk. My favorite song sung by Eve Libertine is ‘Shaved Women’ off of “Stations Of The Crass”. All in all, excellent additions I’m stoked to see you have acquired. Must thanks and love to those sending you those wonderful gifts. P.S. There is only one band I’ve been exposed to (and LOVE) that has been unabashedly influenced by Minutemen (also by Wire, Gang Of Four and The Jam) and that is Giant Haystacks. You should check them out. They’re somewhat obscure enough to find their LPs on the cheap, but I noticed that’s changing slightly due to the success of members latest band Neutrals. Still, it’s not going to break the bank account.
@TheOmahaIntrovert2 жыл бұрын
Greetings! Thanks for sharing your vote. It helps me out. Yeah, seems the general consensus is that you all want to see a mix of different albums/music styles combined in one video, which is totally fine! Crass may not be for everyone, but I find them irresistible in a way! Eve Libertine is so very cool! I have not heard of Giant Haystacks, so I'm quite curious to give them a listen! Thank you for the recommendation! Happy holidays!

Punk and hXc are my most favorite genres. It’s mostly what I discuss on my channel. 1990s gangsta rap/hip hop too. I am so happy to see someone getting into it and enjoying classic records for the first time. Jack Grisham is a genius. I’m hoping to see TSOL next year. New York Hardcore (NYHC) is its own animal. Agnostic Front, Sick Of It All, Cro-Mags, and many others. Very raw but they all respect the roots of punk rock. I love your channel. I learn about new music by watching you and others in the vinyl community. I deeply regret being so limited in the 90s. I missed out on a lot.

Boon front center. One of my top 5 concerts for sure. I never tire of your genre or best of years videos - thematic ones are always appreciated. Enjoy the season...

Penis Envy also my favorite from Crass. They have expanded cd versions of all their releases called "The Crassical Collection". Very cool releases and all contain spacious booklets. Which of course, automatically puts both among the greatest punk records, period. As far as TSOL goes- there are a couple of other albums and eps worth checking out. There was a self-titled EP that came out before 'Dance with Me' and it is worth getting for sure. It's more straight ahead hardcore with a little bit less of the goth vibes. The 'Weathered Statues' ep came out after Dance with Me and it's very experimental and interesting especially the track, 'Thoughts of Yesterday.' Then, they got a keyboard player and put out a post punky album called 'Beneath the Shadows' also worth checking out. After that, Jack and the drummer left the band and they took a decided turn for the worse, although the album 'Change Today?' has some interesting moments like the track, 'Flowers by the Door.' That maybe more than you ever wanted to know about them. Haha

Have you heard The Ex? They are a Dutch punk/post-punk group that formed in the late 70s and still make records and play shows to this day. Their music is very rhythmic, has slashing sometimes dissonant guitar sounds, and hyper-focused socio-political lyrical content. They also make records with African influences, including records with Getatchew Mekuria on sax. Those albums are killer. There's a lot to explore. Not quite the volume of, say, The Fall but close. Also, there's a 3-cd compilation of The Homosexuals' music called "Astral Glamour" that has all the material on the cd you showed, plus material from all the bands these same people morphed into while still in their primary group. Great stuff. It was released by Messthetics, who also has an incredible series of very obscure post-punk comps that are grouped by location for each release. HIGHLY recommend those. Last thing, that label took its name from an early Scritti Politti song. You've showed a couple of the albums they made after going full-on pop, but there's a Rough Trade comp of theirs called "Early" that is some of the most inventive, but still catchy, post-punk you will ever hear. The songs never go in expected directions at any point. It's awesome. Thanks for the video!!!

Cool to see your new additions. I was a teen during that era of late 70's - early 80's. It was a great time to grow up listening to the latest music. That Black Flag ''Damaged' album you have (their best IMHO) is one of my absolute favorite punk albums. It is very aggressive but just classic. It reminds me of that time of absolute rebellion against the system. My top favorite punk album from that era is Circle Jerks 'Group Sex'. The songs are really short, but to me, it is the definition of punk. Another one of my favorites are Surf Punks 'My Beach' (their best one). It reminds me of the surf scene in Southern California at that time and I really like most of the songs on the record. The bass playing is pretty good.

Good review of The Adverts LP you got. Looks very cool. I do have the OG. Regarding Cast Of Thousands, most don't care for it but I, like you, think it's cool. The Offs I have OG but never got the Black Randy record and it's a great record for sure. Great Crass record too. You still have to get The Feeding Of The 5,000 😊. Love that 999 record, saw them in a small bar in Albany NY during that tour. Fresh Fruit is a top 3 American Punk record. Get the vinyl!! First Stiff Little Fingers is off the charts. Lastly, that Angry Samoans LP is one of my prize holdings. In summary, that is one of the best vinyl hauls of all-time! Congrats!!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yes, it deserves a chuckle 😊. The addition of Gary Gilmore's Eyes is nice as it is such a great song. I do have that song on one or two compilations so only the OG is absolutely crucial. Your reissue was such a nice package, with the extra material and gatefold sleeve. Plus, if you stumble on the OG in your record show travels and the price is right, you can still pick it up as having both would be great. It goes for between $55 and $100 (mid and high) according to Discogs. If you were to see a really nice copy for $35 or less, I'd grab it. Otherwise, your copy is great and all you really need 😊.

Another nice selection! Screamers were a big part of the OG LA punk scene and had roots in the SF underground theater scene, Tomata Du Plenty being a member of The Cockettes in the late 60's. That TSOL album is amazing and considered one of the first Deathrock contributions. I highly recommend Change Today from the Joe Wood era, really cool dark stuff like "Black Magic" and "Flowers by the Door". Another funny story, Gary, my first record store boss back in the 90's, told me about his time living in LA as a rock writer and for awhile he was roomates with Metal Mike from The Angry Samoans and Mike would rehearse their songs alone incessantly while woodshedding! Gary would hear stuff like My old Man's a Fatso which is about a minute thirty sec long for 2 hours! Metal Mike is also named "Metal" Mike as he's sited for coining the term Heavy Metal, I met him a few years ago when I was working at Rasputins in Berkeley and he told me about the influence of the band name which was based on some old professional wrestling team. Funny stuff, great band.

Oh, and by the way, so cool you worked at Rasputin's in Berkley! @@TheOmahaIntrovert Yes! Great stack indeed. I worked at Rasputins SF store on Powell until it closed and then at the Berkeley store up until lockdown started. He was digging for country and western records in the dollar bins. Coincidentally they just opened a used clothing, books, movies and music shop called "Mad Monks Vintage" in.....wait for it... Modesto! Cheers!

It has been a hectic month. Falling behind. But I couldn't let this slide without pointing out the cover design for the Screamers. It is by Gary Panter. An artist who helped define the look of LA punk. He was very active in the magazine Slash and has created some wonderful comics and fine art pieces. He was the set designer for Pee Wee's Playhouse and won some Emmys. This was the week that Hamish Kilgour of The Clean went missing in New Zealand and was found dead. I am still reeling. One of the great acts of my teenage years. I hope there is plan to show off some Clean or Great Unwashed or any the Flying Nun acts. Thanks for the great video, some amazing classic punk releases.

Hey, Hanna. Down with boring work! Up with music nerdery! The Television promo is preemo. My guess is the Ruts/Adverts CD is probably from The Roxy. Might be wrong, but there's a fair chance.
