Did one of your MK games brick? What do you think caused it and why!

So I accidentally in the easier menu disable hidden thinking there might be a submenu behind it to turn it to enable and I was 100% wrong. Now even though I did the factory reset in MP3 it still shows the hidden characters as locked. As well cannot get into the EJB menu , Don’t know if I am not entering the button combination fast enough or just cannot access it now.? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I noticed I couldn't get into the EJB menu once, I'm good at doing these codes so I know it wasn't my speed. I ended up needing to turn it off and on again. You do have to be really fast to get the code to work so it could be either one of those problems.

thestreetzking Yes but in the quick menu there is a disabled hidden option I thought maybe there would be a sub menu for enable and they’re obviously wasn’t I chose the disable hidden and it rebooted and now every time I reboot it it has the hidden slots blocked you can’t even put your cursor over the blocks. Every time I try to enter the EJB menu it doesn’t Register the code

@@RMBROCKMEMORABILIA thats normal, you cant put your cursor over them if they are blocked. and it has to be with you not entering the code fast enough. No lie it took me over an hour. I have the pattern burned into my memory now. I did the same thing you did thinking I could do it from the quick menu so your machine is totally fine, its doing everything normal. Keep trying the code. it needs to be done so fast.

After watching your EJB vids, I actually tried the code on the ps2 port of UMK3 that you get with Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Worked just like on any other arcade port, though I needed to plug in two joysticks to pull it off lol. I couldnt do it on dual shocks. But it was a nice quick way to unlock the characters for a play session

Yeah... only difference on Ps2 is the fact that you need to use the EJB menu everytime as it doesn't save the unlocks, same in Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for Cyber-Smoke in MK3.

The sound you didnt recognized, is on the bonus stage. To break things. Is the one you have to break the boat steel thing. Where the roap tights around. When you fail to do so, thats the noise you hear

It sucks that arcade machines are becoming a thing of the past. There’re no arcades where I live, but there used to be a huge one that you could enter for free and there wasn’t a game that cost more than 50 cents. It closed in the early 2000’s and was completely torn down about five years ago. It’s a damn shame.

I'm incredibly sad that the old arcades as we knew them are dead. There are a few that exist now but they charge an entry fee with free play games. This is good but you then get cheap asses or kids that will hog a machine for hours and not let someone else play.

It doesn't even save after putting your initials in? Thats an odd one. The cabinet is done now, I ran into some problems along the way so it took longer than expected. I'll hopefully have a detailed build video out soon.

Play 2 player after and win enough times to show up. 6 or 7 times. It will then ask you to enter initials when you loose and save your streak. All 3 games worked this way and saved for me.

@Lucas Hughes I made the changes in mk2 and mk3 using ejb. I could not do it for Mk1. I did the quick test menu way. Each time I won 2 player matches to 10. Entered initials then shut it off and back on. Sorry that happen to you!

Awesome videos! Is there a benefit to entering your initials?

The main reason for doing it is it makes the game save all of the settings you changed. The Costco version apparently saves automatically though. Anyone with a Walmart cabinet will have to save their initials to save the difficulty and volume settings.

What I find very strange is that there is no volume adjustment for MK1. Do you have any advice on this? Thank you.

There's nothing that can be done through the menus. The real MK1 cabinet had a volume knob inside the cabinet and no digital options. The only thing I can think of is to do some soldering and change the wiring to add a volume knob to the cabinet. I don't know how to do that personally.

No bricking after entering initials, but sometimes the unit doesn't seem to boot up after flipping the power switch. A quick off on seems to solve the issue so I think it might be a startup glitch I didn't notice before (I've only had it a week). You can also hear power provided to the speaker by a small pop like an old tv. I just worry while I'm under warranty that it's a warning sign of something that might wear out soon. Otherwise I'm happy but I'm still afraid to do even the test menu. I would only do it for difficulty anyway.

That's an odd problem. I would actually suggest trying to enter these menus. If its going to break, you can speed it up and get it done during the warranty period.

It should be available no matter what Arcade1Up does. Its embedded in the arcade game's code. The only thing they could do is somehow disable button inputs when its in attract mode. Its highly unlikely they did that though. You can even enter this menu on the Xbox 360/PS3 Mortal Kombat Kollection.

MK 2 stopped loading. I did the ejb menu but I think the problem really came just from saving so often. I had multiple streaks back and forth with my son and we were saving initials a few times within the 2 hours we played and it saved. The blank initial screen happened and then after that MK2 never loaded up

@@KillerArcadeGames Yeah I really think it when it saves it isn't doing it correctly. I ended up getting a refund for it. I am tempted to buy it again but I want to at least have a way to fix it first if the games decide not to load up anymore.

There's really not a huge difference in the difficulty. Everything else in the menus is more just Easter egg style stuff. If you really want to play with these menus you can install MAME on a PC and do it there safely.

I bricked my Mortal Kombat 2 going into that menu, and yes I did it correctly. I'm not ever doing it again. And I've been seeing a lot of videos of people that are doing it and they're messing up either Mortal Kombat 1 2 or 3. Luckily arcade1up is sending me a new board to fix Mortal Kombat II. But if I was you I would not attempt it or mess with it. Technically we're not even supposed to be going into that menu to begin with. Buy the machine, unbox it, and play it the way it is. I will never ever attempt to go into that screen again. Arcade1up is getting so many tickets now with people doing this, eventually I'm afraid they're going to tell people that they're not replacing the boards anymore if you break the machine trying to get into that menu.

Mitt Layton the ejb menu was in the real arcade board so going into that menu shouldn’t hurt anything. Bad emulation software is the problem not going into a menu

I have downloaded the arcade versions of mortal kombat 1 2 3 and ultimate mk3 and play them on a mame emulator on my android tablet there is a menu you can go into on the mame emulator that allows you to get into the ejb menus without pressing buttons you turn the dipswitch option on and it puts you into the ejb menus doing these on the emulator guarantees the the roms won't break or brick

Nick Forest going into the menu on a real board would never break the game anyway. It is bad emulator code and arcade1up fixes them because they know this

If you bought your cabinet more recently, its less likely to brick it. I get almost no new comments saying theirs broke. I think they've fixed it with software/hardware changes since the original release. Still, its a risk but I don't think its as likely.

Your game bricked after changing that setting? There seems to be no fix to bring games back from that. I’m surprised no modders have soldered a USB port to the board to try messing with the settings using a keyboard. I can’t access my A1U games now, the cabinet has been fully modded. I still have it so maybe I could set up a temporary build to keep messing with it.

Modding Arcade1Up No it didn’t break it just reloaded the block diversion and now will not reload the unblocked hidden characters version and can’t access the EGB menu but can play all the games But MK three hidden characters are still blocked

You can enter the kombat codes after a match to unlock the hidden characters individually. Though you’ll have to do this every time you reload UMK3.

Yeah, I've got videos on it. It's not the EJB menu though, but that doesn't matter since you can just access the service menus instantly. @@KillerArcadeGames seriously, and it happened the 3rd day I owned it. I think something was already wrong right out of the box as it would sometimes only load MK1 when selecting MK2 or UMK3. Thing that sucks is I'm still waiting for the new parts. They told me 4-6 weeks :-(

Same thing happened to me, except I never used initials at all, mine powers on, the screen illuminates, but never boots the 1up intro screen. Been over 2 weeks since I put in my ticket and Arcade 1 Up has never responded back to me. But mine did the SAME exact thing as you, mine loaded MK1 when I chose MK2 right before the crash. I also think my machine was bad from the very start. The volume slider was stuck in the center position, and my pixels in the upper left corner were dying before my eyes, I have over 100 dead pixels. The screen looked perfect day one

Some of the games in these cabinets will not load after playing with some settings. It becomes a useless brick lol. In most cases, the other games still work. It doesn't seem to be specific to one game either, I've heard of all of the three games failing for people. Its probably a software glitch with the emulation.

ZeroSignal316 i used the ejb menu before on all three and only made changes to umk3 and saved initials via ejb. But just today I tested the test menu access he mentions and I was able to make changes to mk2 and then what I did was play and won 10 times in a row against second player and then it prompted me to save initials. Once I did that it kept my settings on mk2 and haven’t had any issues in any game. Tested all games over and over and turning off etc

They are starting to add options for accessing the settings. The new Star Wars cabinet has settings under each game in the menu. I ended up modding this cabinet, added new sound system, better controls, a PC running MAME so I can change whatever settings I like. I did the joystick method to change the volume. Then I played 12 dummy rounds with a second player i was able to enter my initials to save, worked like a charm for 3 and 2 and all works well

One of my friends said that it's possible the game when making changes checks the system for coins regularly and when it shows that not connecting to a regular system it just got dumb and starts glitch out. Kinda like how it does a sound check and fails. Idk he just assumes that's why because he use to mode arcade cabinets

BRYAN G that is not correct. The board doesn’t know what it’s connected to. The coins are just switches that when a coin drops in it hits it. It also can be played in free play mode in the real arcade cabinet as I have owned a real mk2. This is nothing but bad code bricking the game nothing more

Thanks Todd! I'm not used to doing longer videos so its nice to hear some feedback on it. Its a tough call, quality control seems to be better this time around but its possible you could be one of the unlucky ones. Mine does have a dead pixel and a couple of other weird looking spots that can be seen when the screen is black.

Never had any problems with the ejb menu, although I've only adjusted the difficulty for 2 and 3, and I do often like to access it in 3. Never had a problem after entering initials both through the menu and in game. I'm thinking maybe this was a problem in early models of the mk 1up arcade

I never did either. I think they just have fixed it, I haven’t had anyone tell me they’ve bricked their machines in a while.

I heard that you can’t do the combo code for the ejb menu on the Costco versions. Is this true?

I'd be shocked if that was the case. Its baked into the game's code, removing it or disabling it would be difficult. The only way I assume it could be done would be to disable button inputs until the start button is pressed. Even then, that sounds incredibly difficult for Arcade1Up to do. Code Mystics, who works with them, could potentially remove access to it by altering the game's code. Again, that seems difficult and unnecessary. This code works on every single thing I've ever tried it on that is running/emulating the arcade game's code. The only reason it may have damaged these older cabinets is probably because of a problem with the emulator they used saving information. It seems to have corrupted something upon saving this stuff and would case the games to individually fail to launch. I'm betting this problem would have come up after entering your initials enough times anyway since that triggers a save to occur.

It's hard to say. I'd assume the chances of bricking yours are still fairly low. You pretty much run the same risk any time you play enough to enter your initials legitimately. If its going to happen, that's most likely what will cause it.

I'm basically doing the same thing. PC set up, with all of the MK arcade games and I'll be running the PC version of MK4 in it. I'm primarily running games that use that exact button layout. War Gods and Wrestlemania are the two main other games I've added so far. I never put a lot of games on my cabinets lol.

Got a question. If I run into the enter your initials screen while playing the game, can I just not enter my initials and time will just run out. Maybe that’s a safe way to make sure these don’t brick. I was going to buy one of these but I’m scared to death of it now. Too bad cuz they’re on sale right now. Awesome video by the way. Subscribed

It would probably still save the blank initials. It looks like the newer MK2 cabinets don’t brick anymore. I haven’t had any recent comments say theirs failed. I have had lots of comments on my other videos about how to change the difficulty saying they can’t get in to that menu. I had to make another video for the newer cabinets to get people in. None of those new cabinet buyers have said theirs has failed. I’d say roll the dice and get one! It will most likely be a new version. You can always just immediately play 10 two player games and enter your initials to see if it fails. If it did, you can return it or get Arcade1Up to send a new PCB.

If it doesn’t brick right after doing it (specifically after entering your initials) you should be good. If it fails later, it’s likely from another reason or hardware issues. Did you get yours from Costco?

@@KillerArcadeGames Dude I entered the test menu in MK2 and lowered the volume and adjusted the difficulty. Then I played long enough to enter my initials. Powered cycled the machine and now MK2 doesn't boot up. I basically bricked it. I'll buy the board from you if you want to sell it. Let me know. Thanks
