About that South Korean version and South Korean retro gaming in general: South Korea was a dictatorship when Super Mario Bros came out. Just two years afterwards, it became a democracy. (Surprising, right?) For this reason, the Hyundai Comboy (Korean NES based off the American version) and Japanese Famicom were able to coexist in South Korea. I have also been to Yongsan, an electronics district in Seoul, and I have seen games imported from Japan, as well as Korean language games coded for the Japanese region. But Japanese imports from Japanese companies were banned until 1998. A black market exists in South Korea selling Japanese games, and Korean language versions of officially licensed games for less than the MSRP the developer priced it at. I bought Super Mario Maker 2 in South Korea for $48, when Nintendo was selling it for $56 there.

Contrary to popular belief, Mario 2(J) wasn’t unrelased only because of difficulty, but rather because the wounds left from the crash of ‘83 were still fresh, and they didn’t want to release a game that people would find unplayable due to any factors, be it difficulty, game design, or some other third thing, because the ET game was panned for similar reasons regarding difficulty (it was too cryptic for its time and getting out of the holes where items were hidden was a chore). The fact that the first mushroom many players saw was a poison mushroom, coupled with the fact that nobody would want to watch the attract mode to figure this out (Mario dies by collecting the mushroom in the attract mode) raised a red flag and the game wasn’t denied release in the US. Still, we did get a glimpse of some of the game’s stages in the arcade version of Super Mario Brothers, as that version contained new levels that were eventually recycled in Mario 2(J) along with other aspects such as the game’s slightly updated font style.

I heard a different theory: SMB2J was too similar to SMB1 and as such Nintendo thought people in the U.S. wouldn't pay for the basically same thing a second time, just with different levels, so they've made Doki Doki Panic romhack. And the difficulty was another factor.
@letcreate1235 жыл бұрын
Wrong. What actually happened was NoA's JP game reviewer got sent a copy of SMB2J by NoJ to review and decide if it would be suitable in the West. After playing it he immediately died to the poison mushroom in 1-1 and overall found the game too frustrating and not fun to play, so he promptly rejected it.

Not quite. What happened was that Nintendo made an arcade version of Super Mario Bros called Super Mario Bros Vs. Honestly, some PCs of the '80s would've been able to match or even exceed the NES, with enough effort. Hudson was just limited by their own partnerships with Sharp and NEC, I think. If they'd developed an MSX2 or especially an MSX2+ version of this game (which they could've, since it was an open platform, but I assume Nintendo had some restrictions, maybe?), it could've been pretty stellar. Heck, I think even MSX1 could've handled this with a bit of programming wizardry, as I've seen some crazy things done on MSX1 hardware. And if this had happened just a BIT LATER, they easily could've gone with PC-98 instead of PC-88, which would've been able to run circles around NES hardware, as that machine was getting into 16-bit territory. The Sharp X1 and PC-88 especially, though, were just very limited machines. I think even an MS-DOS machine from the era could've outdone either of them, save for maybe the audio (unless the MS-DOS machine had a sound card installed). I think part of the problem, too, was simply that Hudson of the time really just... wasn't very good at programming for microcomputers. They DID release a handful of MSX games, for instance, but most are sluggish and kind of clunky compared to other MSX games of the era (the MSX version of Adventure Island, for instance, is borderline unplayable and woefully incomplete, containing only 4 stages total). So this was a bit doomed from the start -- though it was an ambitious undertaking, at least!
@CorySticha5 жыл бұрын
Earlier this year, someone released a Commodore 64 port of SMB1. They actually took the original NES version, disassembled it, and made the changes so it would run on the Commodore. On a stock C64, it runs a bit slow due to slower clock on the 64, but playable. Definitely more so than the NEC version in this video. Add an aftermarket accelerator or run it on the Commodore 128, and it runs as smooth as the NES. It definitely proves your point about PCs of the time being able to handle NES games. Of course, Nintendo didn't like it, so a cease and desist order was sent within a couple days of release. Can't affect Nintendo's cash cow, after all.
@Wyrdwad5 жыл бұрын
@@CorySticha The C64 is a decently powerful machine, actually. In many ways more so than the PC-88, which had some significant visual limitations in particular. Technically, it had a better screen resolution than most game consoles of the time, but that was about the only plus in a sea of a minuses. The PC-88 is just... not a great machine. The MSX2, though, is more powerful than a C64 by far, and technically more powerful than an NES aside from the lack of hardware scrolling and (I think?) a slightly slower clock speed. Both of which would be remedied with the MSX2+ revision, and then absolutely TROUNCED with the MSX turboR revision.
@rameynoodles1525 жыл бұрын
Imagine if they used the Sharp X68000 instead! It was released in 1987, which is late, but still within the time frame. It's really surprising that Nintendo even allowed this, especially considering that id Software created a Super Mario Bros 3 PC game that ran on MSDOS, and it was fantastic! Only, Nintendo wouldn't license to them...

Not to mention after-market sound chips like the OPL4 cartridge and such.

I remember watching the gaming historian's video of this, but I I liked how you review added some more stuff I didn't know. I definitely wouldn't want to play this game except for the novelty of it I guess, especially with its performance issues.

You give such unique content, with such a soothing voice. Dang man, way to find a niche in such a saturated ‘gaming’ segment of youtube. I really hope the algorithm/some YT employee comes across your videos and throws you on trending to get the subscribers you deserve. You’re 10x the quality of tons of channels with millions of followers.

I doubt it will help him much if that happens, allot of KZbin content on the Trending tab is (like enemy spam levels in Mario Maker) hot garbage content to gamers.

Since this video was made a true romhack of Super Mario Bros. has been created that fully replicates all features of Super Mario Bros. Special without any of the downsides of playing on the PC-88 or Sharp X-1. It even has the choice between the coolour palette used in one of the official versions (I can't remember which one exactly) and the original Super Mario Bros. colour palette. It's the definitive version of the game.

We somehow got a port of this for the NES, and it was highly playable and it was still just as hard.

11:00 Good news, everyone! With Frantik’s 35th Anniversary Edition hack, we now have a fully playable SMB Special in the original SMB engine! It just goes to show that, when all’s said and done, once you take out the PC engine jank it’s actually a pretty decent follow-up to the original game: it’s a tough challenge with some really interesting level design that never approaches the level of straight-up BS that Lost Levels regularly reaches.
