Killiecrankie (Gaelic: Coille Chneagaidh) is a village in Perth and Kinross, Scotland on the River Garry. In 1689, during the Jacobite Rebellion, the Battle of Killiecrankie was fought on the northern edge of the village.
The Battle of Killiecrankie, also referred to as the Battle of Rinrory, was fought chiefly between highland Scottish clans supporting James II and VII and government troops (mostly lowland Scots, often incorrectly labeled "English") supporting William of Orange on July 27, 1689, during the Glorious Revolution.
Hampered by lack of men and resources, the Jacobite leaders gambled on a decisive battle which they hoped would attract wider support. An outnumbered Jacobite force under John Graham, Viscount Dundee and Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel defeated a government army commanded by General Hugh Mackay. Although it was an unexpected and stunning victory for the Jacobites, it had little overall effect on the outcome of the war. Dundee was killed in the final minutes and their forces were scattered at the Battle of Dunkeld the next month.
